Freak Out Your Friends With Possessed Books

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smart Home, Misc. Tech,

Possessed BooksThese ancient-looking tomes may look like they are merely gathering dust on your bookshelf, but once someone walks by them, the middle one slides out towards its victim and emits eerie sounds. Lifelike at a size of 8 x 8 x 6.5-inches, you can scare your buds with these Possessed Books for $24.95. We wanted to know why they decided to include two copies of Silas Marner, but since we remember it being required reading in school, we figure that no one will mess with either of them before the gadget is triggered.

Squished Animal Holders

So your CDs and DVDs just keep piling up in the corner and you still are housing them in the nearest empty cardboard box. We suggest these Squished Animal Holders as a replacement. Available in cow, pig, or chicken, the two ends resemble wheel tighteners, while the animal in the middle looks like it is becoming road kill. Made of poly resin, each 3-piece set measures 6 x 8.3 x 8-inches and carries an MSRP of $39.95. We know they don’t do much, but they are certainly one of our more amusing finds.

Box Office Breakdown:  A Homerun For Homer

The Simpsons

Looks like Homer ain’t gonna be needing a deal on donuts anymore….

With a $74 million opening weekend, The Simpsons Movie debuted higher than most of the animated features released…ever.  Only the two Shrek sequels did better.  Quite a head-shaking number since we can still see the series for free on television.  But viewers from every single Springfield in the US—plus a thousand other cities out there—love the family so much, they were willing to pay for more.  Especially when it comes with nudity.

What theatergoers aren’t willing to pay for is more I Know Who Killed Me placed a dismal 9th, possibly due to lack of promotional work by the star.  How ironic that in the end it was Lindsay who was responsible for killing the movie and possibly her career.

Review: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix

, the movie based on book five of the Harry series, opened yesterday in a mid-week event that had everyone scrambling to get to theatres. But, is the movie worth all the hype and hoopla?

The first scene featuring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter himself) showed a rather buff young man who could…sort of…pass for fifteen. Maybe. Fans were immediately thrown into danger and treated to some stunning CGI, though anyone unfamiliar with the series by this point will be instantly and immediately lost. If you don’t already know the story, The Order of the Phoenix is not the place to get started.

New Bond Novel, Devil May Care, To Debut in 2008

Bond…James Bond Devil May Care, a new James Bond novel set to come out in 2008, will celebrate Bond author Ian Fleming’s birthday. Written by British author Sebastian Faulks, the new Bond novel has been authorized by the estate of the late Mr. Fleming. The book is set during the Cold War and will move through several scenic locations, true to Bond literature. Fleming wrote Goldfinger, Dr. No, and From Russia With Love, among other Bond adventures, and passed away in 1964 (before he could see his dreams destroyed by one Mr. Pierce Brosnan – and let’s not even get into what a bad casting call that was). Kingsley Amis and John Gardner have also written Bond adventures through the years. Devil May Care will come out both to continue the Bond saga and to celebrate the 100th would-be birthday of Ian Fleming. Film rights to the movie have not yet been sold – which, thankfully, means it hasn’t been miscast either. It’s a shame there can only be one Sean Connery.

Famed Romance Author Kathleen Woodiwiss Turns Her Last Page

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Talent, Gossip, News,

Book Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, the author responsible for a bevy of best-selling, steamy romance titles, has passed away at the age of 68. The writer’s first book, The Flame and the Flower, was an instant best seller in 1972, and Woodiwiss has been turning out regular titles ever since. Woodiwiss died of cancer in Minnesota last Friday, according to son Sean. Over the past thirty-five years, Woodiwiss published thirteen novels – every single one of which made it to the New York Times best seller list. Woodiwiss was known for turning out detailed, thick novels in the 600-page range, setting her apart in an industry that was known for much skinnier volumes. She received a lifetime achievement award from the Romance Writers of America in 1988. Her last book, Everlasting, will hit the shelves in October 2007.

Fans Freak Over Rowling Decision, Demand More Harry

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry PotterJ. K. Rowling, author of the incredibly popular book series, has publicly stated several times that there will be seven books - and only seven books. Now, fans are trying to force her hand - and her keyboard. Thousands have signed a petition asking Rowling to continue the series, and Rowling herself admitted she would “never say never” to more Harry. Rowling has spent seventeen years writing the series, and says that Harry’s story will come to a complete end in the seventh installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Rowling said it is “unlikely” she will return to the world of Hogwarts on the page. Speculation about the seventh book, sales of which have already broken records though it has not yet hit the shelves, has run rampant. If title character Harry Potter does perish in the book, as many experts have predicted, the “Save Harry!” campaign could become a very moot point.

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: News,

DescriptionThe seventh (and last) edition to the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, hasn’t even hit the shelves yet, and it’s already sold more than one million copies. According to Amazon.com, J.K. Rowling’s last Harry novel is the most pre-ordered product in Amazon’s history, with 1.6 million copies already on the pre-order list for shipment around the world. The book will be in bookstores worldwide on July 21, though sales are expected to rise by several hundred thousand copies by that time. The Harry Potter franchise includes a highly successful string of movies, with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix scheduled for theaters July 13. The final movie won’t make it to the theatres until 2010.

It’s No Mystery: Nancy Drew is a Hit

Nancy Drew movie posterNancy Drew is perhaps best known by women, most associated with yellow books, and loved for her girl-detective approach to life. There is always some concern when a movie is adapted from a popular book series – will they get the character right, will they make it modern enough for even today’s girls to connect, will they give us a juicy Drew-type mystery? The reviews are in, and the Nancy Drew movie hits every single mark. Played by Emma Roberts (daughter of Eric and niece to Julia), Nancy Drew jumps off the page and becomes a heroine that even today’s ultra-modern, high-tech teens can adore.

There is enough standard Nancy to keep purists happy, but enough modernization to keep this flick from being a flop. In Nancy Drew’s first big screen appearance since the 1930s, Nancy, father Carson, and housekeeper Hannah move from River Heights (a city that, anyone who has read the books knows, has been Nancy’s stomping ground for decades) for sunny L.A. In her new school, Nancy is initially shunned by her peers. Does she change who she is to better fit in? Not Nancy Drew – she stays the same, and in the end wins more than a few fans over to her side and her way of thinking.
