The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Narnia Film Delayed

AslanProduction has been delayed on the third Narnia movie installment The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Originally scheduled to hit theatres May 1, 2009, the movie now won’t be released until May 7, 2010. Production was supposed to begin this January, but has now been pushed to next summer. The delay has been attributed to the young stars of the film, as execs are saying it’s very challenging to work out scheduling difficulties. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, the second flick in the franchise, was supposed to be released this December. It won’t be out until May.

Bestselling Novels Moving to the Big Screen

Bestsellers headed for the boxofficeWe’ve come to accept the following as fact - if we enjoy a book, sooner or later, Hollywood will ruin it for us.  Not even chick lit is safe anymore.  Don’t get me wrong, I will be there on opening night for The Jane Austen Book Club, even though that inner librarian impulse is puckering her lips and telling me to reject adaptations outright always.  And we’ll suck it up when we recommend the read to a friend and she says, “Oh, I saw that one!  It was great.”

However, lately, we’ve been pleasantly surprised by adaptations like The Devil Wears Prada and the most recent Harry Potter film, which, rather than raping the material and leaving it for dead, actually did it justice, and were good films in the same go.  So, maybe Hollywood is shaping up, maybe Jane Austen will smile down on Friday’s theatrical release instead of completing the roll into the next grave that started when Mansfield Park opened.

Regardless, if you want to picture your own characters before their faces become replaced by Evan Rachel Wood and Zac Effron, you’d better get on the following titles, because they’ve been optioned:

A New Wrinkle in the Anna Nicole Smith Saga

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Talent, Gossip, Rumors,

Anna Nicole Smith Just when you thought the headlines were over and everyone was going to get back to their lives, Blonde Ambition: The Untold Story Behind Anna Nicole Smith’s Death had to come along and give us something new to gossip about. The book will hit stores Tuesday, and the fur has already started to fly. The text of the novel alleges that , who won the paternity case for Anna’s surviving child Dannielynn, and , who claimed to have a deep love relationship with Anna, are both planning to sue the book’s author Rita Cosby. Here’s why: the book alleges that Stern and Birkhead shared a sexual encounter before Anna Nicole’s death, then worked together to manipulate the media and glean profits from the tragedy. Birkhead admits he has not seen the book, but in a bold statement told the AP this will be “the most expensive lawsuit settlements in book publishing history.” Yowzah.

Stern has stated that he will aggressively pursue a libel case. Stern’s attorney is calling the book pure fiction. Cosby stands behind her book and her sources, saying the text of the book was run past attorneys and the publishing house prior to publication. The book is filled with allegations concerning a “secret deal” between Stern and Birkhead, though Birkhead says the timing of the book (the week marks the anniversary of Daniel’s death and Dannielynn’s birth) was calculated. Cosby says she wrote the book specifically for Dannielynn…though it isn’t likely the baby knows quite how to read just yet, and the subject matter surely won’t be appropriate for her until a decade or two has passed.

New Amsterdam: Is FOX Out of Fresh Ideas?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Drama, Prime Time, FOX, Gossip,

FOX LogoForever, a best-selling novel in 2002, depicted Cormac O’Connor as a immortal man living in Manhattan. O’Connor looks for love among the city’s women, hoping to find the eternal peace he craves. Now, it’s 2007, and FOX has been touting a new series which features an immortal man living in Manhattan, who’s trying to find love. New Amsterdam, the series, isn’t supposed to be based on the book…at least, that’s what FOX execs are saying. The book character bears a scar on his shoulder, while the Amsterdam character has scars all over his torso and body. O’Connor, a fan of jazz player Art Tatum, learns to play the piano. Amsterdam also tickles the ivories, favoring jazz player Thelonious Monk. O’Connor can only return to a normal life by finding the right Manhattan babe, while Amsterdam is told he will not grow old “until you find your one.” The one’s female status is implied. The writer of the book owns the TV and movie rights to Forever, but has no plans to enter into litigation with FOX.

O.J. Simpson Book Gets Second Shot

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Talent, Gossip, Rumors,

O.J. Simpson mugshot

The family of Ronald Goldman has struck up a new deal with literary agents to publish and repackage O.J. Simpson’s “If I Did It.” The book is about the slayings of Goldman and Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson. The family will leave Simpson’s manuscript completely intact, adding their own commentary to the pages. Portions of sales of the book will go to the Ron Goldman Foundation for Justice. The book was set for release last year, but public outrage kept it off the shelves because of the gritty subject matter: in the book, O.J. explains how he would have committed the murders – though he maintains throughout that he did not, in fact, commit them.

Box Office Breakdown:  Audiences Not Yet Tuckered Out

Rush Hour 3

Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, Pirates, Ocean’s, Bourne and now Rush Hour 3.  All six three-quels premiered directly at the top of the heap this summer.

Unfortunately, a six-year gap between the second and third Rush installments may have led to what some would consider slightly disappointing receipts.  On any other occasion, a $50 weekend would be something to brag about.  But considering it pales to the $67.4 million brought in by the 2001 predecessor, it’s only worth a pat on the back.

But really, the Disappointment of the Week honor should really fall on Cuba Gooding Jr.  When you’re accepting rejected scripts from the man who played Norbit, you have to wonder where it all went wrong (two words: Chill Factor).  Sadly, Daddy Day Camp was originally slated to be a straight-to-video release but somehow tested well enough to be released in theaters.  Who knows?  Maybe Gooding can pull a Halle and go straight-from-Oscar-to-Razzie.

BookSwim is Like Netflix for Books: But Will it Succeed?

BookSwim Logo

is the granddaddy of the rent-by-mail craze, making it tres easy to rent DVDs and video games without stepping off your curb. Now comes BookSwim, with the same paradigm: create a queue of books to read, wait for them to be shipped to you, send them back when done so your next title can be sent out. No shipping or late fees, and keep the books as long as you want. BookSwim claims to have over 150,000 titles, and plans range from $20 USD (3 books at-a-time) to $36 USD (11 books!). We’re curious to see if BookSwim takes off, as it faces stiff competition from a little something called the Public Library, which we hear is free. But, if you live far from the library, BookSwim could be worth a shot.

Box Office Breakdown:  Bourne Breaks Bank

Bourne

Matt Damon may still be vying for People magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ title—but he has one thing that George Clooney and Brad Pitt don’t have:  the biggest debut for an August opening ever.

The Bourne Ultimatum‘s $70 million take improved upon the previous Bourne installments and gave Damon his largest weekend to date (and that’s including all three Ocean’s movies).

Meanwhile, Lindsay Lohan should be happy that she’s holed up in rehab again—though seeing her movie kicked out of the Top Ten would have probably sent her there anyway.  Apparently theatergoers can only handle one movie about Bratz at a time…
