Google Editions eBookstore to Launch by Summer - Let the ebook wars begin

Posted by Finnian Durkan Categories: Corporate News, Google, Internet, Rumors,

According to an article in today’s Wall Street Journal Google Editions—Google’s attempt to elbow its way into the ebook market—will launch sometime this summer. When it does become available, Google Editions will launch with some 400,000 to 600,000 titles available. When you compare this to the 330,000 titles available on Amazon.com for Kindle supporting devices, it is clear that Google means to be a major player in the ebook market right from jumpstreet. With Google Editions, not only will people be able to buy books via multiple devices—including the iPad—using Google’s book search service, but independent shops will also be able to sell Google Editions copies of books via their own personal websites. With the availability of titles coming directly from their search engine, and not from a typical store-based website, Google is betting heavily on its massive web-presence to make Google Editions the standard of the ebook market. Cry ‘havoc’ and let slip the (ebook) dogs of war!

Angelina Jolie to Play Kay Scarpetta on the Big Screen

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: 20th Century Fox, Adaptation, Thrillers, Casting, Celeb News, Celebrity Gossip, Scripts, Upcoming Releases,

If you don’t recognize both the headlining names, you haven’t been reading Patricia Cornwell. The extremely popular, death-themed books that make up the Kay Scarpetta series (which totals a staggering 17 novels over a span of 20 years) could finally be coming to the big screen after numerous attempts to make it happen. The actress who’s making it all possible? Possibly, the last one you would ever expect to play the doctor-lawyer-heroine that is Kay Scarpetta: Angelina Jolie.
The statuesque actress does not at all fit Cornwell’s description of Scarpetta, who is a petite ash-blonde. A medical examiner, Kay is a workaholic, oft-unattached female who uses her death investigation skills to track dangerous serial killers. Commonly, Scarpetta herself becomes a target for the very killers she’s determined to catch. The books originally debuted in pre-CSI ages when crime scene and death investigation felt fresh again (memories of Quincey, ME had long since faded).
Jolie’s interest has breathed new life into the flick, which has been an on-again, off-again project since the books were first published. The movie will not be based upon a specific Cornwell novel. Instead, it will feature a younger Dr. Scarpetta in the years before she becomes the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia - though, oddly, the film will be set in the present day instead of the 1980s (which would fit the chronological order of the books).

A modern version of Frankenstein is in the works.
X-Men producer Ralph Winter and former Vanguard Films president Terry Botwick are working on the project after acquiring the rights to Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein. Instead of the traditional setting for the horror character, the movie - which could be turned into a franchise - will be set in modern day New Orleans.
“These books have enough twists and turns to keep the public coming back to the theaters for many years to come,” Ralph told Variety.

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Handhelds, Rumors,
Okay, we all know by now that Apple is going to be announcing their tablet at tomorrow’s January 27th Apple event, but the CEO of McGraw-Hill, Terry McGraw, just kinda spilled the beans on CNBC:
“Yeah, Very exciting. Yes, they’ll make their announcement tomorrow on this one. We have worked with Apple for quite a while. And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable. So what you are going to be able to do now is we have a consortium of e-books. And we have 95% of all our materials that are in e-book format on that one. So now with the tablet you’re going to open up the higher education market, the professional market. The tablet is going to be just really terrific.”
Is true, that means no Snow Leopard tablet, to those who were hoping for that. Thoughts?

Yoko Ono Planning to Write Memoirs

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Gossip, Rock,

Yoko Ono has revealed plans to write an autobiography about her eventful life with John Lennon.
“I would love to do it. I just have to find the time,” the 76-year-old widow said. “It will be my next book, which will be written in the next five years.”
Yoko - who was blamed by many Beatles’ fans for causing the legendary band to split - previously claimed she wouldn’t release a book for fear of hurting the families of people close to the group, including Lennon’s ex-wife. John and Cynthia - who had a son Julian together - divorced in 1968, one year before his marriage to Yoko, the mother of his son Sean.
Lennon later died in 1980 after being shot by deranged fan Mark Chapman outside his New York apartment building.

Rare Charles Darwin Book Found

England’s famed auction house Christie’s has managed to get an original copy of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, the book that details the scientist’s theory of evolution. The book, first printed in 1859, was found on a toilet book shelf in a family home in southern England.
Insert your own evolutionist theory crap joke here.
The book, one of only 1,250 first editions printed, will be sold on Tuesday to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its first publication. Christie’s estimates the tome could bring as much as $99,000 USD.
