Amazon introduces a thinner, lighter Wi-Fi Kindle for $139

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Handhelds, Hot Deals, Wireless / WiFi,

This evening, Amazon introduced us to their new Wi-Fi Kindle ebook reader, and we’ve gotta say, we think they’ve done it again. Hot on the heels of the release of the newly redesigned Kindle DX, the new Kindle is 21% smaller and 15% lighter than the Kindle 2. You don’t lose out on screen real estate though, since the Kindle keeps its 6-inch display size, although the e-ink screen now sports 50% better contrast and 20% faster page refreshes. It now packs 4GB of storage space, which can hold up to 3,500 books. Even better, though, is that Amazon is pricing this at just $139. That’s a significant price drop from the Kindle 2. If you want the new Wi-Fi model, but also want the free 3G connectivity, Amazon will be selling a 3G model for $189, which is still a huge savings from what the Kindle 2 sells for. Here are the links for those who want to pre-order:
The new Kindle will be released on August 27th, and if you pre-order, you’ll receive it that same day. It’s available in both white and graphite.

Olivia Munn Says Suck It, Wonder Woman

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Television,
Geek goddess and fanboy icon Olivia Munn is the host of G4’s Attack of the Show (for now it seems) and pops up now and again on Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show as their Senior Espionage Correspondent (among others).
Now she’s letting her geek flag fly ever more proudly with her new book, a memoir entitled and on sale now: “Suck It, Wonder Woman.”
With Wonder Woman now in the news with a new costume and a new direction, the timing could not be better for a book with that title. Also, too, Comic Con International is right around the corner so comics will once again be in the nightly news cycle (if only so TV networks can run pictures of guys dressed like Stormtroopers and Klingons).
And, she’ll probably be there as well on behalf of G4. (I wonder if she has trouble booking a room?) And she’ll probably interviewing those same cosplayers. But at least she’ll have the sense of where they’re coming from, unlike, say, the manscaped fratboys who cosplay as journalists on TV.

VIDEO: Kendra Wilkinson Talks About Being Intimate with Hefner

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Television, Drugs,
Kendra Wilkinson may not have wanted news about her sex tape to come out, but she doesn’t have much problem talking about other aspects of her life.
In her new memoir, Sliding Into Home, the married mother of one addresses her past drug use and her job as a stripper. Oh - and she also talks about that first night with Hugh Hefner. (Yes, there were other women in the room at the time.) A juicy excerpt from that segment of the book can be heard above.

Gerry Conway Likes Talbot Mundy

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Marvel Comics,
Gerry Conway co-created The Punisher, co-created Man-Thing, co-created Firestorm and wrote some of my favorite Marvel comics, including a long run on Amazing Spider-Man. When he successfully transitioned out of comics and moved into show business, I still followed his career as he worked his way up the ladder. He’s recently been writing and producing for the Dick Wolf Law & Order empire, specifically on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
Talbot Mundy, author of King of the Khyber Rifles, influenced a who’s who of writers with his tales of manly adventure at the edges of the sun-never-setting British Empire in the early 20th century. Fans included Robert E. Howard, Leigh Brackett, Robert Heinlein and Fritz Leiber.

Celebrity Chatter: Break-Up for Kanye West, Marriage for Carrie Prejean

-A source claims Kanye West and girlfriend Amber Rose have decided to take a break. Maybe she got tired of explaining the “fish sticks” joke to him?
-British celebrity and X Factor judge Cheryl Cole has been diagnosed with malaria. A bite from
a mosquito during a trip to Tanzania may be to blame.
-For some reason, Levi Johnston has apologized to Sarah Palin and her family for making statements that were “not completely true.” It’s unclear whether he’s sorry for that Playgirl spread as well.
-Former television personality Pat O’Brien is in the process of writing a book about his checkered personal life. I believe we’ve heard the audio version already.
-Disgraced beauty queen Carrie Prejean got herself one of those opposite marriages. She wed Oakland Raiders quarterback Kyle Boller last Friday.
Harlan Ellison’s Book Purge

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, DC Comics,
If you’ve ever wanted to stroll through an author’s personal library, but they won’t let you into their house (and with good reason), Harlan Ellison’s wife Susan offers the next best thing: a book purge from his private collection.
There’s enough good stuff written about Mr. Ellison available on the internet that you don’t need me to cut and paste a bunch of it to reaffirm the award-winning author’s place in literature and pop culture. From books to movies to TV to comic books, he’s really done it all and won awards for lots of it. Mr. Ellison and I have had about a dozen fun and friendly encounters over the years and it was always a pleasure to hear his voice at the other end of the phone.
“What the hell are you doing now, Mason?” he’d call out teasingly and we’d take it from there. Very enjoyable conversations about the state of the world, the comic book industry, and even one about the history of, if I remember correctly, the Golden Age super-hero, Cat-Man.

Matthew Williamson is to be the subject of a new book.
Matthew Williamson will follow the British-born fashion designer’s journey from his debut collection in 1997 up to his present day global success.
A host of big names are expected to contribute to the book on Williamson, who counts celebrities such as Keira Knightley, Kate Hudson and Gwyneth Paltrow among his fans. Actress Sienna Miller, a close friend and muse to the designer, will provide the foreword while a host of big names from the world of fashion will give contributions. These include Anna Wintour, British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, fashion designers Zandra Rhodes and Sir Paul Smith and Joan Burstein, founder of Browns boutique in London.
Written by fashion historian Colin McDowell, the book will be lavishly decorated in Williamson’s trademark vibrant colors and patterns. Released in October, the book will be accompanied by an exhibition at Somerset House in central London, which will run until January 2011. The exhibition will launch with a party on October 12 where the central courtyard of Somerset House will be made over in a Matthew Williamson theme.
iBooks 1.1 now available for iPad and iOS 4 iPhones

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Books, App Updates, Apple, Free Apps,

Just a heads up—one of the benefits of iOS 4 (which is available now) is that you can install iBooks on your iPhone. It’s not included in the OS itself, which allows Apple to update the app without updating the entire iOS version itself, so you’ll have to download it manually from the App Store. The good news is that it’s available now—so go ahead and grab iBooks, it’s free!
[Thanks again, Jason!]

Tyra Banks Returns to High Fashion

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities, Health & Beauty, Models, News,
Despite her successful television career, Tyra Banks has caught the modeling bug and is returning to her past career.
The 36-year-old has gone back to her first agency, IMG, but this time is aligning the firm with her own company, Bankable Enterprises. The America’s Next Top Model host said, “The last time I was with IMG, I was set on taking on the modeling world in the high fashion and commercial sectors. Now I’m dreaming even bigger but this time for my company as well. Aligning myself with brands that I believe in, and helping them achieve the kind of success they’re looking for, helps all of us as we grow our businesses.”
As part of the new deal, Tyra will participate in commercial endorsements and other fashion related opportunities. IMG’s Chairman and CEO Ted Forstmann added, “Tyra is a global brand and we are happy to welcome her back to the IMG family.”
Tyra is also soon to bring out her first novel, Modelland, which she promises will be “inspired by some of the models I’ve known - both nice and ‘ice.’”
