IMAX Tickets for Avatar Already on Sale

Avatar posterIt’s never too early to start buying Christmas presents…or ordering movie tickets.

is not even scheduled to open for another four months, but those eager to get good seats can guarantee their spots now. AMC has already begun selling tickets to midnight showings at 75 theaters. Most of those locations are IMAX venues.

James Cameron’s 3D sci-fi entry received good worth of mouth after an extended preview on IMAX screens last week. (You can view a teaser trailer here.) It was this overwhelming interest that prompted the theater chain to begin advance purchases.

“They said that if all these people are going to come to our theater to see 16 minutes of a film that doesn’t open until December, let’s give them an opportunity to buy tickets to the first performances of the show itself,” Chris Aronson, Fox’s Senior VP of Distribution, said.

Since the film’s running time hasn’t been confirmed, only midnight viewings are available at this time. Avatar opens on December 18.

First Look: Teaser Trailer for Jim Cameron’s Avatar

“This is great.” Those are the only three words spoken in this clip for the upcoming release of Avatar. And based on the scenes in this brief trailer, it probably will be.

‘s 3D sci-fi actioner - his first dramatic feature since Titanic - transports us to “Pandora,” where humans are encroaching on land occupied by the Na’vi, a humanoid race. Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation) plays a paralyzed marine who enters the lush rainforest with help from the Avatar program.

Ennis and Burrows Save Up for Crossed #6

Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Reviews, Independent,

Crossed #6I’m sure many, like myself, were disappointed with last month’s Crossed, issue #5. Not a single sadistic zombie was to be found! Little did I realize that, until I read Crossed #6, it was merely a calm before the storm. Trust me—it’s a huge, effing tempest.

Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows open the issue with our characters face to face (literally) with an undead eliminated by his own kind. Barely two pages after that, we discover just why Kitrick is as depressed as a Prozac-popping Elizabeth Wurtzel (aside from the usual post-apocalyptic depression, that is). I’ve got to say: Ennis and Burrows deliver with this flashback.

Just when you think that they’re going to feed into your Ichi the Killer-like sadism (yes, you who reads these twisted comics) some more, they throw the cutest, most adorable puppy dog at you! Yes, a puppy dog!

Unfortunately, you don’t have much time to fawn over the dog as another revealing past from the bunch comes to the forefront. I’m not sure whose past is worse, to be honest. But I do have some comments about one of them (spoilers after the jump)...

Second Life Wedding

Remember when we told you about the woman who murdered her ex-‘s avatar on Maple Story? This story is even more bizarre. Amy Taylor met her husband David Pollard in a chatroom and married him in both Second Life and the real world. They had been together 3 years when she discovered his avatar having sex with other ones. She had even gone so far as hiring a virtual detective. When David said he didn’t love her anymore after being caught, Amy filed for divorce the next day. This is proof positive that if you are going to mess around with Internet dating/activities, expect to pay the consequences in real time.

Man Proposes on Chrono Trigger

We were in such disbelief about the jilted online wife who murdered her ex’s avatar on Maple Story that we thought we would share a more pleasant side of online dating. A guy known as “TheRealPfhreak” hacked into his girlfriend’s Chrono Trigger ROM, filled it with memories in a new area named Koma Kulshan, then proposed. We know that some of our best friends were met in chat rooms, so we hope this will remind others to make virtual love, not war.

Woman Takes Revenge on Online Ex Via Avatar

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Role Playing Games,

Maple StoryThere is gaming, and then there is extreme gaming. A woman in Japan has been arrested for killing off her ex- online husband’s avatar in Maple Story. Apparently, the 43 year-old hacked into the game using his ID and password, then did the dirty virtual deed. Although she hasn’t yet been formally charged, she could face up to a 5 year bout in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.00. We think a fitting punishment might be a forced stay on Second Life for about six months.

Edd Hifeng Takes on Second Life

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech, Science,

Edd HifengIf you think your Second Life avatar is kewl, think again. Edd Hifeng is not just a typical virtual world figure. He is actually an AI created by researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He can converse and reason to a limited extent. While he can answer limited questions, he only understands English that has been translated into mathematical logic. Director Selmer Bringsjord says Edd could be a hint of things to come and hopes that it will lead to more sophisticated holograms that can interact with people in 3D settings such as subway stops.

NASA Plans to Teach Online

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Science, Video Games,

NASA OnlineNASA is considering creating a multiplayer online game which would simulate some of their missions. They are hoping that it might attract the next generation of astronauts and are seeking volunteer companies to invest in their idea by February 15. As they put it, “Virtual worlds with scientifically accurate simulations could permit learners to tinker with chemical reactions in living cells, practice operating and repairing expensive equipment, and experience microgravity.”

NASA already has an island on Second Life called Co-Lab that may someday invite avatars to come along on future space missions. Perhaps willing organizations’ avatars can meet their avatars for virtual lunch.

Zwinky Goes for the Hard Cash

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Wearables, Design, Internet,

Zwinky ShoebuyZwinktopia has followed in the path of Armani in Second Life now that Shoebuy has decided to sell its products through the site. Paying with her/his ZCard, an avatar will receive an “exclusive” pair that will allow the “wearer” to perform a specific action for each brand. While this particular gimmick will probably wear off quickly in the typical Zwink user, the company is smart enough to make it a tie-in so that the two of you can click over to the Shoebuy site and select similar wearing apparel. That obviously means real $$ for the shoe conglomerate.
