Armani Opens Boutique in Second Life

Armani BoutiqueGiorgio Armani has certainly been active of late. He has just teamed with Samsung, and now he has opened a virtual shop on Second Life. Modeled after his showplace in Milan, he will be sending an avatar of himself during its grand opening. Users of the site will be able to buy his wares with Linden Dollars or can connect to his Emporia Armani. The designer had this to say about the concept, “Finally, I can really be in two places at once.”

More and more of these companies are opening up stores in Second Life. I am curious to know how profitable this is. Do they have to have hired Second Life staff? smile

All these silly companies jumping into second life because they think it’s the next big thing even though it’s over with. There was an article in Wired mag recently (print) talking about how big name companies (such as Coke) spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop, lease “land” and support their presence in Second Life only to get no users visiting.

Supposedly only a percentage of the accounts accounted for are unique people and only a small percentage of those actual users really log in frequently. Unlike sites like myspace/facebook that get a majority of users visiting daily, Second Life only has a small percentage that visit even once a week.

But a great time for anyone good at developing in Second Life to profit from these huge companies throwing money at it…if anyone is getting something out of it it’s them, as well as second life themselves. The companies are just getting ripped off.

I had a look at the armani store in second life and I have to say it was really boring. There was nothing for sale and nothing entertaining in any way. Second life is a game not some sort of way for corporations to advertise themselves. Most people in second life dont appreciate this sort of thing and wont even visit. It seems really pointless and contributes nothing to the game at all. Its nothing but self serving. Whats the point of walking around some slick looking virtual Armani store with nothing to buy?? Was also very heavy on lag which leads me to believe they are using a lot of rez boxes to save on prims etc.
Armani has entirely missed the point.
