Gap Proceeds with Jennifer Hudson Ad Spots
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Movies, Music, Photos,

The day after Halloween, the Christmas season began. It will not end until January (decorations and store returns linger for days after the actual event). And since retailers are constantly trying to skip Halloween altogether and start the buy-friendly holiday as early as September, the Gap has moved ahead with their ad campaign. In the ads, potential customers will see a smiling, red-swathed Jennifer Hudson spreading her holiday spirit. For some viewers, it feels at odds with Hudson’s tragic personal tragedy.
Could the Gap really be this tacky?
Never worry, holiday shoppers, this mega retailer would never step into a potential PR landmine without covering all the bases. A rep for the chain has confirmed that Jennifer Hudson herself approved the use of her image, even at this upsetting time.
“She said she wanted to be a part of it and that we should move forward,” said Gap spokesperson Olive Doyne, who added that Hudson was given the option of backing out of the campaign completely. The Oscar-winning actress was photographed for the spots last July.
You can see her, part of the “Shine Your Own Star” campaign, smiling from magazines, newspapers and billboards throughout this shopping season. Several other stars are also part of the campaign.

Microsoft Plants Kiosk in Front of Apple Store
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Apple, Microsoft, PC / Laptop,

Microsoft, in a clever move, located an “I’m a PC” recording kiosk outside an Apple Store in Birmingham, England. By the way, if you really are a PC, you can upload a photo or video online and you might find yourself in one of their commercials. The company has already selected several of them in ads that are airing on network TV and are part of a $300 million advertising campaign. We’re all for any idea that doesn’t feature Gates and Seinfeld.

DirecTV Out of Line With Newest Ad?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Commercials, Gossip, Video,
We giggled when Christopher Lloyd talked about the future of DirecTV for a commercial spot. We laughed when Kathy Bates and William Shatner joined the fray. We ogled Baywatch-era Pam Anderson tout the service for her spot. We fell over in hysterics when we saw the Scooby Doo advertisement. But now, DirecTV may have twisted the funny bone of some viewers a little too hard. Their latest ad, just another in a long string of past pop culture references, has inspired some pretty heated controversy.
The ads were drawing attention even before the campaign hit the fan. Using the same actors and scenes but different lines, the service has promoted itself as an alternative to cable by putting us once again back in our favorite movie moments - as if to prove that the second time around really can be better than the first with DirecTV. They’re funny, they’re clever and they’re working. Er…they were.

Microsoft Launches New Commercials
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Microsoft, PC / Laptop, Videos,
Thank goodness Microsoft realized how silly their latest Seinfeld/Gates TV ads are and have moved on to the next phase of “Life Without Walls” in new ads, billboards, and other media sources. The company will also be launching Web and TV ads called the “Real PC,” using both celebs and “little people” who declare “I’m a PC.” We certainly hope that this commercial blitz is more successful. By the way, we just caught one. No Seinfeld, just Gates. Take your last look.

Did Sarah Palin Save the GOP?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Editorial, Gossip, Ratings,

You probably never heard of her before, but after this past week it’s going to be hard to forget Sarah Palin’s name and face. The highly unknown governor dropped jaws when she stood beside John McCain at the Republican National Convention merely days ago, and in one lightning flash went from “who’s that?” to “potential Vice President.” Ah, politics.
Palin has created a brand-new buzz for the GOP that has suddenly thrust the Republican national ticket into the limelight - and into the realm of real possibility - once more. Maybe you can’t trust the media hype or the sudden sensation she’s created, but you can trust the ratings.
On its second night of coverage, the Republican National Convention drew in a staggering 21.5 million viewers. The numbers are huge, sure, but still not as big as the 26 million the Democratic Convention drew just the week before. And now, both conventions are over….and which one is everyone talking about?

John McCain in the Spotlight
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Television, Legal Issues, Rivalries, Breaking News,

For a man who seems to shun celebrity, John McCain certainly has been in the media a lot lately - and little of the coverage has to do with his policy or his plans for the country. The republican will now get more attention for a wholly different reason…he’s being sued.
McCain’s political strategy, thus far, has been to undermine presidential competitor Barack Obama by calling him that dirtiest of all words - a celebrity. In the ads, McCain shows clips of Obama with his adoring public while the Jackson Browne hit “Running on Empty” plays in the background. Here’s the problem: McCain never got permission to use the song.

McCain vs. Obama
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Television, Rivalries, Editorials,

Presidential contender John McCain isn’t going to let pithy messages from Paris Hilton keep him from the goal - making competitor Barack Obama seem like the lesser of two choices.
Today, many are busy laughing at Hilton’s recent comeback to John McCain’s political ads, but already the republican has issued a new anti-Obama spot. The new TV spot is in the same vein as the one which came before, wherein McCain likens Obama to celebrities like Hilton and Britney Spears.

Entertaining Politics
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Rivalries, Videos, Editorials,

Politicians are not celebrities. Celebrities are not politicians. ...Or, are they? The fur is really starting to fly in the election. Presidential candidate John McCain has likened Barack Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Rappers who support Obama have released tracks dissing John McCain. What happens when politics and celebrity mix? Nothing good.
In one of his political ads, McCain seems to be trying to undermine Obama as a presidential contender - calling him a star instead of the vehicle of change Obama claims to be. It isn’t odd for politicians to use celebrities to further their own cause, and it isn’t even odd for celebrities to decide to become politicians.
So maybe it’s even the norm for celebrities and politics to mix…but should they? Sometimes, celebs can do much more harm than good when they back a certain candidate.
