Turbo Toaster Designed Out of Frustration

Oliver Newberry, a graduate of Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London, got perturbed when his beans, one of his fave meals, wouldn’t stay hot while he was making his toast. His prototype Turbo Toaster was born, apparently impressive enough to allow funding from Heinz. We admire ingenuity here at Gear Live but wonder if he could just keep the legumes on the burner while making his toast or perhaps make the toast first and the beans will reheat it. The thought of that breakfast may not get our taste buds excited, but it certainly helped Newberry land a gig.

So we recently told you how the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is conserving energy by switching from incandescent to LED lights. If you read the story and found yourself wishing you could do the same…here’s your chance. A company called Green Home is selling LED Christmas bulbs in both the “traditional” and “globe” styles (pictured). The upstart company claims their LED lights are 60 times more efficient than regular bulbs, so you’ll save energy and cash…which you can put towards those holiday gifts. The “traditional” bulbs start at 12.50 USD, while the “globes” begin at $15.

AquaMaker Makes Potable Water From the Air

We bet the inhabitants of Herbert’s Dune would have coveted the AquaMaker AM10. It can make up to 36 liters of potable water from air moisture in 38 hours. It has a digital display microcomputer with an easily readable screen, electronic sensors to keep it running properly and remind its owner about needed maintenance and any performance problems. It also features an air filter to keep out dust, odors, mold, and bacteria, a timer, an easily replaceable filter pack, and an auto-defroster. After processing, it will return clean air back into the environment. We wonder if the recent scarcity of water in some parts of the South, as well as other places on the planet, could benefit from the AquaMaker and hope that their governments will take the hint and invest in some of them.

Rosalin Chanyasak has designed this prototype for those of us that prefer our hot food to remain that way for more than a minute or two. The Fête Serving Plates use thermoelectric technology to maintain either hot or cold temperatures. Made of polycarbonate, they are dishwasher safe and come with covers so that you can pop them in the fridge if you have leftovers. LED icons show the ingredient list for alergy info, although we are pretty sure in most instances you would know that anyway.
