Apple shutting down Ping social network on September 30
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Software,

Remember when Apple launched Ping? It was supposed to be the quintissential social network for anyone who loved music. Except that Apple crippled Ping right out of the gate, and we learned that it wasn't really a social network at all - it was just another method the company wanted to take advantage of to get people to buy more music. It was annoying and resrictive. You could only talk about music that was available on iTunes...and nothing more. Recently, it was rumored that Apple would kill Ping, and now it has been confirmed. Ping closes its doors on September 30th. Anyone out there upset by the closure? Anyone?

Apple has announced that it went back to the drawing board and spent three years redesigning its iconic headphones. The result? EarPods. According to Apple, the EarPods headphones offer a much more natural fit across the board, and the acoustic quality that is typically found in higher-end earphones. The headphones feature a two-grille design, and sit at the edge of your ear canal with the main speaker doing the work. You can get a pair of the new Apple EarPods today for $29, or if you plan on picking up the new iPhone 5, iPod touch, or iPod nano, the EarPods will be included.

After leaving the line stagnant for two years, Apple has just announced the new 5th generation iPod touch. What's changed? A whole lot. The new iPod touch picks up the same 1136 x 640 4-inch display that the iPhone 5 has. Both cameras see upgrades as well, with the rear camera being bumped up to 5-megapixels with LED flash, and the front camera now supporting FaceTime HD at 720p. Bluetooth 4.0, AirPlay mirroring, and 802.11a/b/g/n support are included as well. The 5th generation iPod touch is also the thinnest, coming in at an incredible 6.1mm thin, and weighing in at 8 grams, and sees a processor upgrade with the Apple A5, and picks up the new Lightning connector.

Lightning: Apple’s new, smaller dock connector for iPhone 5 and iOS devices
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Corporate News, USB,

During today's iPhone 5 event, Apple unveiled its new Lightning dock connector that will ship on the new iPhone 5. The company is switching its iOS devices from the familiar 30-pin dock connector, to the smaller 8-pin design. Nothing was said about the speed, but based on the name, we are assuming that the Lightning connector is compatible with USB 3.0 speeds. The connector is also reversible, making it easier to use. For those with accessories that rely on the 30-pin connector, Apple is also releasing an adapter to make the transition easier.
