2012 Holiday Gift Guide: Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Handhelds, Women, Men, Techies, Under $250, Under $500,
The next item in Gear Live’s 2012 Holiday Gift Guide is the Kindle Paperwhite. Why? well, as great as e-ink readers have been (and they've been pretty stellar,) since the original Amazon Kindle was released, their one tragic flaw has been that they become pretty useless in the dark. You either simply can't read them, or have to use a small light attachment accessory. Enter the Kindle Paperwhite. Amazon has designed what we consider to be the best e-ink reader to hit the market. It's flagship feature is the front-lit display, which works great when you're in the dark and want to read your latest ebook purchase without using a backlit tablet that's hard on the eyes, or an awkward clip-on light accessory. It also supports new features like telling you how much reading time you have before you finish your current chapter, and an all-touch display with virtually no lag. Check out our Kindle Paperwhite review, unboxing gallery, and video after the break for more, and head on over to Amazon to pick up the Kindle Paperwhite for $119 for that bookworm in your life.
Honorable mention: Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight

Microsoft working on Xbox Surface, a 7-inch gaming tablet
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Handhelds, Microsoft, Rumors, Video Games,

Among the smaller tablets of the world like the iPad mini, Kindle Fire HD, and Nexus 7, Microsoft's platform is nowhere to be found. Sure, the company just launched Surface a couple of weeks ago, it's first first-party tablet device, and it has the Surface Pro on the way too…but what about the smaller form factor? Well, it turns out that Microsoft is working on it's very own 7-inch tablet, the previously-uncovered Xbox Surface.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Review
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Features, Handhelds, Product Reviews, Videos,

Amazon introduced the Kindle Paperwhite alongside the rest of the completely refreshed Kindle family at a special event on September 6, and some would argue that, despite three new Kindle Fire tablets being introduced, the star of the show was the Kindle Paperwhite. The Paperwhite takes the place as the top E Ink Kindle model. Avid readers still have an affinity towards E Ink displays, as they're much easier on the eyes than backlit tablets and smartphones. The problem with them is that they generally are unusable in the dark. Barnes & Noble solved that with its Nook Simple Reader with GloLight, and now Amazon has its own solution with the Kindle Paperwhite, which features a front-lit, touch-sensitive, E Ink display. Does it live up to the hype? Follow along in our unique take on a Kindle Paperwhite review to find out.

2012 Holiday Gift Guide: iPod touch 5th generation
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Handhelds, Techies, Teens, Under $250, Under $500,
Apple's focused on the iPod touch as being the "funnest iPod ever" for a while now, but the introduction of the fifth generation model put it over the top. You've got the new 4-inch Retina display, FaceTime HD video chat, 5 megapixel rear camera with 1080p video recording, and built-in gyroscope all packed into the thinnest iPod touch ever--and now it's available in a bunch of colors - silver, pink, green, blue, black red, and yellow. Of course, you need great software running on hardware like this, and the App Store fits the bill with over 700,000 apps available. A great gift for teens who don't need an iPhone, or anyone who wants a mobile iOS device that isn't a phone. Prices start at $299 (or $295 on Amazon) for the new 5th generation model, and $199 (or $195 on Amazon) for the older 4th generation version:

Posted by Jason Diaz Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Software,

Apple has just released iOS 6.0.1, a maintenance update for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. The update adds a plethora of fixes and software optimizations, fixing things like that nasty Microsoft Exchange meeting cancellation bug. So now those employees with BYOD policies under IT rule can get a green light to update. This comes just in time for the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad, both of which launch tomorrow. As always, do a backup before updating. Here is a list of changes that iOS 6.0.1 brings:

It comes in two flavors: a 16GB model for $399, and a 32GB model for $499, both being Wi-Fi models, with neither offering a cellular option. Google Nexus 4 from LG available on November 13th for $199.99
Posted by Jason Diaz Categories: Smartphones, Google, Handhelds,

This is the Nexus 4 by Google manufactured by LG. The latest and greatest creation from the folks in Mountain View. The stand out aspect is the new wireless charging capabilities. Surprisingly, this smartphone doesn't offer LTE connectivity, and that's a huge letdown in our opinion. However, the device comes with HSPA+ for those overseas travelers. It also comes with the latest version of Jelly Bean, Android 4.2; untainted by carriers or OEM bloatware and skins which, for some, is the reason why they would opt for this pure experience. The 16GB Nexus 4 will be available for $199.99 on T-Mobile with a two year agreement. If you prefer an unlocked model, those start at $299 for the 8GB or 16GB for $349, available only in the Google Play Store. All device versions will go live for purchase on November 13th.

Apple complies with UK judgment, acknowledges Samsung tablets not as cool as iPad
Posted by Jason Diaz Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Handhelds,

Apple acknowledged today that it has been legally ordered by a UK judge to publicly state on Apple.com, or a full page ad in a UK newspaper, that Samsung tablets are "not as cool" as the iPad. The UK's case revolved around whether Samsung's tablets infringed on the iPad design and trade dress, which Apple lost. Such a verdict leads one to conclude that if Samsung's designs were, in fact, "cool," that Apple would have won the case.
Leave it up to Apple's genius to take full advantage of the situation by killing two birds with one stone. By including the judges contradictory ruling verbatim, they highlighted the unflattering statements regarding Samsung products compared to Apple's, as well Samsung's failure to make its products cool based on the perspective of "the informed users overall impression." The saving grace for Samsung is based specifically on the choice of name branding on the back of the device.
