Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, Design, PC / Laptop, Peripherals,
Are you the type that cleans your mouse with a toothbrush when no one is watching? You only have to wait until late August if you are in the U.S. until Belkin releases its Washable Mouse. No need for a pad, this mouse works on wood and upholstery in any direction and features optical technology with 1200 dpi with its USB connection. The best news is that the little techie rodent is only $29.99, a decent price to pay for this modest mouse.

Make Your Own Green Lantern Ring
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech, Mods / Hacks,
Green Lantern devotee “Honus” has built his own versions of the original ring, including one that glows. Posting on Instructables, he shows every step but cautions that the ring cannot be sold, even by him (copyright issues, don’t you know.) Still, if you have a smidgen of talent in the area of jewelry-making and access to silver or resin casting supplies, you might give it a shot and make DC Comics glow with happiness because you honored one of their own.

Parking Meter Reads Itself
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Design, Internet, Misc. Tech, Transportation,
Suppose you are in the midst of a romantic meal and somewhere between the Merlot and the Camembert, you forget about the parking meter. Not to worry, in certain areas of Canada a Photo Violation Meter is being tested that will remind you to toss in another coin via your cell phone. Developed by Photo Violation Technologies Corporation, the gadget will also allow you to pay the coinage so that you don’t have to leave in the midst of the Beef Wellington. If you have turned your phone off, the meter will also let you pay the fine, assuming you have any money left after paying for the Crème Broulette and tip.

When your AA batteries haver reached their weakest point, but are not quite out of juice, there is now an alternative to putting them in the nearest trash or seeking out a recycling center. Toss them into the Magnetic Battery Eater and watch his LED eyes blink until the battery’s juice is no more. David Dear created this gadget for Kikkerland which is available for $6.95 at Ship the Web. We are thinking that the Eater could be made in a battery-operated version, but perhaps that concept is in fact a wee bit cannibalistic.

Step On the Carpet Alarm Clock
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,
With only a grabbed image off a site, it took us more than a week to track down this Carpet Alarm Clock with LED, mainly because we weren’t sure what to call it. It turned out to be merely a prototype designed by Sofie Collin and Gustav Lanberg, but it still merits a look-see. No snooze on this one, you have to get out of bed and actually step on it to turn the gadget off. We’re not sure if it would have the same effect of a shower in the a.m., but we are thinking that our standing on a scale is certainly the best way to make us aware of a new day. Perhaps in the future the two concepts could be combined. That way, you can step on its fuzziness, find that you’re late for work, then have it tell you that you had one too many french fries last night.

Auto Mower: Like Roomba, But For Your Lawn
Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Design, Smart Home,

So you’ve heard of the Roomba, right? The device that sweeps your living room for you? Well, if you’ve ever wondered when someone would invent one for the lawn, your prayers have been answered, via the aptly-named Auto Mower from Husqvarna, which runs on its own and can be set to operate at a specific time. Auto Mower works in the rain, climbs inclines, and turns around when it bumps into something. It’s even quiet enough to run at night! Just bury a “boundary wire” around your lawn, so Auto Mower will know not to slay your prize-winning petunias. The device runs on a rechargeable battery, and comes with a dock. And don’t worry: no one can steal your new best friend, as a 4-digit pin number is required to even pick it up. Auto Mower is available (at only a few stores) for $2000. Sounds high, until you compare it to lawnmower fuel costs, hiring someone to mow it for you, or just having some extra free time.

Doodling on the Fridge Encouraged
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,
How cool is it to have a refrigerator that you want your kids and your spouse/partner to draw on? Nova Consul’s Aquarela Refrigerator, with its dry erase door and sides, can become an easy grocery list, a note pad for the rest of your family, and of course an outlet for your anger if your roommate does something to tick you off.
The appliance comes in portable fridge and full length frost-free models for BRL 199.83 (~$103.33) and 1449.00 ($748.78) respectively. At this point they are only available in Brazil, but we are counting on American companies to take the hint. Instead of providing us with stainless steel or other high-class finishes, we can see them developing a child-friendlier concept.

Levi’s Hip New Cell Phone
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Smartphones, Design, Portable Audio / Video,

We love our Levi’s, so much so that we remember when they were referred to as (and carried the tag of) “levi’s.” This phone has to have been made with us in mind. The Paris based ModeLabs Group’s stainless steel phone will feature a standard TFT screen, MP3 player, 2 mp camera, and will come in black, silver, and brown copper, like the rivet, with a detachable chain. ModeLabs will also be offering a “shiny” silver and sand model for, as they put it, “the fashion forward.” Available in Europe this September, you can catch a peek at the hand-assembled patch on the back of The Levi’s Phone on their demo.

While checking out Guy Hoffman’s AUD Lamp,we found another bot that is part of the Robotic Life Group at MIT. Leonardo was obviously inspired by the movie Gremlins but named after Da Vinci. Their creators refer to him as “the Stradivarius of expressive robots” by attempting to make him a combination of an animatronic figure with the intelligence of a robot. This includes facial feature tracking and stereo depth estimation. Instead of teaching the robot outright, the team uses learning by tutelage, imitation, and social referencing.
At this point Leo is still under control of its keepers and as such can only move 16º at a time, although plans are in the works to make him completely autonomous. Watch this video clip and hope they remember not to feed Leonardo after midnight.

Wear Your Seat While Others Want to Go Home
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Wearables, Design, Misc. Tech,

IDSland’s Wear Your Seat is a curious little combination of cushion and clothing. So far only a prototype, you carry it like a backpack and then recline with it when you get to wherever you are going. Designed by France’s Olivier Peyricot, it adapts to each part of the wearer’s back and adjusts accordingly. Although it wouldn’t fit into most stadium seats, we can envision its use during a hockey game, where you not only freeze, but can never get used to the hardness of those wooden benches.
