We found this great dashboard style watch that is a remake of a Paul Smith model from the late 90’s. As Mitch of Watchismo explains it, the PS20 has hands that when they reach the right of the display, they appear to fly back. The watch is in fact double-handed, so that when one side is out of view, the other end appears. Made in Switzerland, it is water-resistant, has a quartz movement, and is made with a stainless steel case and crystal cover. We just know that it looks quite yuppie with a price of £375 (~$745.00) to match.
(Thanks, Mitch)

AUR Lamp Interacts With Humans
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Science, Videos,
We can hardly contain our inner excitement over this prototype AUR Lamp that was designed by Guy Hoffman, a member of MIT’s Robotic Life Group. The device knows when to turn on and off, follows you around the room, and can be set to mood lighting. According to Hoffman, AUR “is aimed to evoke a personal relationship with the human partner without resorting to human-like features.”
We would like to ask the team politely what happens when a second person enters the room.

Aquada Goes From the Road to the Water
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Design, Transportation,

Who wouldn’t want one of these? Push a button on the Aquada and go from land to water via a boat ramp, the beach, or a slipway. The wheels automatically rise in less than twelve seconds and the UK based Gibbs claims that it will head out for over 30 mph and can tow a water skier. Although the Aquada has been around a couple of years, Gibbs announced that their multi-purpose vehicle is already available overseas for $200,000 and will be heading into mass production next year to become available in the first half of 2009 in the U.S. for under $100,000.

Prototype Finger Mouse Looks Cool and Complicated
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, PC / Laptop, Peripherals,
Another finger mouse will be hitting the market soon, this one making its debut at COMPUTEX 2007 in Taipei. Still a prototype, the ring mouse works off your USB port and slips over your index finger. There is both a left and right click and a third button to center your cursor. It also features a retractable cord. We hope that they will remember before releasing the mouse that many of us are left handed and never could get the hang of the ones that adjusted to our hands but not our brains.

Robocco Plays Bartender
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Videos,
Someone has come up with a more advanced version of the Beer Launching Fridge. The Asahi Robocco Beerbot stores and refrigerates up to 6 cans of your favorite brew and keeps it at a perfectly chilled state with an internal sensor. The robot opens the can and pours it at a slant with an accompaniment of a male, female, or custom voice. It can also go into cleaning mode when excused from its duties and features a child lock to keep the underage away. The bot comes with 2 mugs and 6 foam cup bases. Robocco is available from Kilian-Nakamura for your upcoming Father’s Day Beer Fest for $799.00. Although it may not be able to toss us a beer, we think it’s handy enough to compensate for that failing.

Kansei Reacts With Emotion
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech, Science, Videos,
Not just another pretty face, Kansei is capable of 36 different expressions in response to emotional interpretation. His data base is created of 500,000keywords and he can show happiness, sadness, fear, and loathing with the aid of 19 actuators. Professor Junichi Takeno of Meiji University believes that creating the bot will result in a method of improving communication between humans and robots. While we find President Bush a little scary lately too, we must remember who programmed Kansei in the first place to react the way he does when he hears the word “president.”

We have found yet another bot being developed by the U.S. military, this time one to carry the wounded away from battle. The BEAR (Battlefield Extraction Assist Robot) is considered to have a “friendly appearance” to keep the injured calm. The robot is six feet tall and can carry up to 500 lbs. Remotely controlled with a camera and mic, his DBB (Dynamic Balance Behavior) allows him to carry his charge on his ankles, knees, or hips for up to an hour over difficult terrain. The BEAR is expected to be ready for testing in five years and we figure that it will probably receive plenty of practice in the field.

Clairvoyante Adds White to RGB Displays
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Smartphones, Design, Handhelds, PC / Laptop, Portable Audio / Video,
A new display technology is being developed by Clairvoyante. White pixels are added to the already familiar red, blue, and green and made larger by 33%, which allows more light to shine through so that when the backlight is lessened, power is saved. They claim that the technology could help cell phones, digital cameras, and laptop batteries last up to 50% longer.
The company also says that PenTile architecture provides darker blacks, whiter whites, and sharper fonts. The first appearance of the new technology is slated to appear in software later this year and Clairvoyante is hoping that developers will utilize it to create products for early 2008.

Abduction Lamp Prototype for Both Aliens and Humans
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Science,

Designer Lasse Klein has created a prototype Abduction Lamp made of metal and glass. The light source inside the lamp lights up the windows and cone-shaped beam. Lasse originally got the idea when he drove past a lamp shop and saw how light fell from one in the window, resembling a UFO. After returning to the scene of the sighting the next day, he realized it was just a common lighting device that made the image. Now a 3-D model, the designer is hoping to create enough hype to make his idea a workable reality. GE, bring this good thing to light!

Is That Really a Tiger Across the Street?
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech, Videos,
Video artist Karolina Sobeca has created a type of screen projection of animals called Wildlife that we just had to share with any of you that had never seen it previously. Connected to a moving car, the frame rate of the moving images corresponds to the speed of the automobile’s wheel rotation by use of a sensor. If the car stops, the screen creature does as well. The projection often flickers or disappears when detected on buildings, another car, or humans. We dig Karolina’s approach to art, “We are elevated from the everyday reality through this element of fantasy into a world with more dimensions, possibilities and perhaps beauty.”
