DescriptionDesigner Geoffrey Packer of the UK is more than a simple staircase manufacturer. He has created spiral as well as layer radial vertical stairs. We think his DNA staircase is not only inspirational, but should be a must in any laboratory/house that either is concerned with genetic research, wants to make a scary movie, or simply one up the neighbors. You can contact Geoffrey to let him know what you think or order your own basic genetic structure.

Gesture-controlled Remote

When you are not too busy controlling your music with the MX Air Mouse, Australian scientists have created a remote box that can be utilized by hand gestures. Its built-in cam recognizes 7 hand gestures to control up to eight different gadgets. For example, you clench your fist for start, a sideways peace symbol for channel, and a thumbs-up for channel-changing. The product of engineers Dr. Prashan Premaratne and Quang Nguyen, they claim that during testing the device could distinguish between real commands and habitual gestures under various lighting and range of distances. We wonder how it would react to the constant “high-fiving” that is done during male-bonding sporting events. Perhaps they should include that into the design before it hits the market in the next 3 years.

Eclipse WatchIf you are as big a fan as we are for TokyoFlash’s distinctive watches, maybe now is the time to treat yourself to one of their elite watches, such as their classic Eleeno Eclipse Watch for $112.99. In honor of Uminohi (Ocean Day,) a holiday for expressing gratitude for gifts from the sea and the prosperity of Japan, they are offering a coupon good for anything from ¥1000 (~$8.00) to ¥5000 (~$40.00.) That’s a fairly decent deal considering many of their exclusive models run only in the $60.00 price range. The only catch is that you must use your coupon before July 16.

USB e-lighter

Designer Toa Ma must be a smoker, with his description that we couldn’t have said better ourselves.

“You are working late in front of computers. You are watching suspenseful and breathtaking movies. You are receiving disheartening emails. Right at these moments you want to grab a cigarette to lift your mood but happen to have no lighter with you. Can you imagine how dismaying this is? Hence I designed this e-lighter for you.”

Although only a prototype, we love the inventive design with its LED for nighttime usage, but we think that we might need an extra hand so we won’t miss a minute of that breathtaking movie.

Robo-dogRobotics engineer Stefan Schaal so impressed DARPA (the U. S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) with his robotic dog that they have given him $1.5 million to continue his research. Traveling at a speed of only 0.6-inches/second, the toy poodle-size Robo-dog measures position, velocity, and acceleration of its legs. It then learns from any mistakes it makes and reroutes himself. Schaal is now hoping to triple that step rate, no doubt hoping that the robotic pup can eventually run all the way to the bank. You can check out his slow trek on Live Science, although we warn you that the creature is rather eerie to watch in action.

Santa Rosa iMac

It’s been almost three years since the iMac has enjoyed a redesign, when it went from the old-school lamp stand look to the current “monitor with chin” enclosure. Well, the rumor mill is churning again, this time with speculation that will be updating the with another new look by August. The expectation is that the design will feature a 2-inch thick aluminum enclosure, which would make it look similar to the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. Furthermore, it is believed that the 17-inch iMac will go the way of the dodo, as Apple looks to release the newer model in 20- and 24-inch sizes only. Lastly, it would only make sense that these models get a bit more horsepower under the hood as well - that should come by way of Santa Rosa processors at speeds up to 2.4 GHz, as well as 1.3 megapixel iSight cameras. We know, August can’t come fast enough.

OFRODU Robo of South Korea is testing OFRO as a security guard at a Seoul middle school before offering it to the general public. Reported to be the first of its kind, the bot is designed to alert staff when it sees someone trying to seduce a student, the thought being that they will then send in a real human or scare the perp away via loudspeaker. With a camera and mic, the bot can be pre-programmed or manually controlled to take its 3 mph rounds. At a cost of $100,000.00 apiece, we think this is definitely a high end hall monitor which will surely make you think twice before telling it that you really don’t have that doctor’s pass after all.

Energy Saving Adapters

Because chargers still utilize energy on standby, these Energy Saving Adapters, designed by Gilles Belley, individually hook up in a strip to visually let you know when your cell phone, PMP, laptop, or camera is fully charged. Don’t respond within 3 minutes, and the power is automatically cut off for you. Although still only a prototype, this is definitely an improvement over the usual green and red lights. We were thinking that if you just pay attention, you won’t need a device, pretty as it is, to take up more energy while fulfilling its purpose.

Taberu MeThere are everyday business cards and then there are the edible ones. Japan’s Taberu Me “cards” come in laser-edged foods such as nuts, rice, pasta, and coffee beans. Arigatu’s CO2 laser etches up to 700 characters/second with what they refer to as “clean-looking” logos, names, and telephone numbers. Weirdly, the word Taberu means “eat” and Me is either short for “meishu” (business card) or the English “me,” making us wonder if the concept is such an intelligent idea when meeting new clients. A set (150) of these are available for 5,800 yen (around $47.00) at Arigatou.
