Samsung Develops H2O Fuel Cell
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Corporate News, Design,

The future operation of cell phones may be by water. Not to be outdone by Toshiba and their Methane PMP, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has come up with a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator that run on H2O. When the phone is turned on, the metal and water inside produce a hydrogen gas which reacts with oxygen to generate up to 3 watts of electricity. This means one can get up to 10 hours of use, about twice as long as rechargeable batteries. Although still a prototype, we are looking forward to the day when we can be rid of batteries that go down when we need our phone the most. Expect the technology to be perfected by 2010.

The Water- and Scratch-Proof Sony VAIO Type G Notebook
Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Design, PC / Laptop,

Sony has introduced its new VAIO Type G notebook, which actually has a drainage system built under the palm rest, and draining holes under the notebook itself. Plus, if you spill your Pumpkin Spice Latte on the machine, it automatically shuts off (Sony does recommend having the computer checked out anyway). In addition, the LCD screen has a special coating to prevent scratches, and can withstand a drop from 28” while turned on, and almost 35.5” when powered off. This take-no-prisoners VAIO is available in Japan for approximately $1500 USD, depending on how it’s customized. No word on when it will be available stateside.

We haven’t been this excited since our last viewing of “Willie Wonka.” Flavorleague, a wall covering company in New Orleans, has developed scratch and sniff wallpaper. Still recovering from Katrina, the company is hard at work and recently introduced their Fruit Cocktail Collection. The Flavor Paper includes B-A-N-A-N-A-S, Cherry Forever, and Tutti Fruitti. We dig the fact that they contribute a portion of all sales to the Human Rights Campaign. We’re hoping that they will create Snozzberries to go with the rest of the collection.

Universal Avatars To Be Developed
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Design, Internet, Video Games,
IBM and Linden Lab’s Second Life are collaborating to create universal avatars that will be able to travel between virtual worlds. Both companies are hoping that more gamers will explore virtual worlds by making them simplified. They are putting the emphasis on a single system for now that allows users to move between worlds. The announcement came before the launch of the Virtual Worlds Conference in San Jose, California, this week. Last year there were only 9 virtual sites, but that number has jumped to thirty. We want to know if you go from Warcraft to Second Life, could you get to stay in your armor?

Honda’s new concept car PUYO is made of a gel-like material that is supposed to be safer in case of collision. This must be where they got the name, which translates from Japanese to “touching the vehicle’s soft body.” On display at the Tokyo Motor Show that begins October 27, the car runs on fuel cells and therefore features energy efficiency. The vehicle has a small frame and a roomy “silky feel” interior. Honda will also be displaying its green CR-Z sportscar with its gas-electric hybrid system. Come to think of it, the PUYO does look user friendly.

Busted Tees Say What You Think
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Wearables, Design, Video Games,
Anyone who has ever played the first Nintendo system and had it fail mid-game recognizes this sentiment. Started by the creators of College Humor, they sell a wide assortment of original t-shirts and hoodies because, as they say, they want people to “have fun, laugh, look good, feel comfortable, get good jobs, and get sweaty dancing.” Currently all their tees are only $15.99 each (with free shipping if you live in the U.S.) They also encourage others to send in pics with modeling their wares or submit designs for their consideration. If you are overwhelmed by the multitudes on Cafe Press, you might give the site a nod.

Four Cams Are Better Than One When Parking
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Design, Transportation,
Parking should get a wee bit easier now that Matsushita has designed an omni-directional camera system that displays the vehicle as if it was shot from above your car. Four previously available Panasonic 250,000-pixel rear view cams were placed on the front, rear, left, and right sides, while their images can be seen on an ECU navigational screen inside and synthesized to look like it is one image.
Previewed as a prototype at this year’s CEATEC 2007 in Japan, the company plans on releasing their device within the next year or so. We figure it will be useful around those pesky deer that try to grab our parking spaces when we go camping.

Colorware now painting iMac, iPod classic, iPod nano, and iPod touch
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Design, PC / Laptop,

We recently clued you in to the fact that Colorware was offering custom iPhone paint jobs, but Lars just let us know that they are now offering customization on the new iPod classic, iPod nano, and iPod touch lines. If that wasn’t enough, they are even taking order for paint jobs on the new aluminum iMac as well. Colorware already does the Mac mini, so it would seem the only thing left out would be the Mac Pro. It’s probably for the best. In any event, you can head over to Colorware now if you want to get your paint on. They’ll allow you to send in your device to be painted, or you can purchase a brand new one directly from them. Of course, this all comes at a premium.

Vixta: The Vista of Linux?!
Posted by Sparky Categories: Design, Internet, Microsoft, PC / Laptop, Software,

Crazy about the Windows Vista UI, but love Linux? Vixta could be your your thing. Vixta is a new Fedora-based Linux distribution featuring a surprisingly Windows Vista like look and feel. In fact, it’s so surprisingly like Windows Vista that Redmond based lawyers can’t be far behind - it’s a pretty blatant rip of the Aero interface.
While Vixta captures the look of Vista, one wonders if it’s truly as evolved as Vista is. Windows Vista may have it’s flaws, but ove all it is a highly polished operating system with lots of features to make it easy to use for the not so computer literate. No, really. This kind of refinement in a user interface takes a lot of time and energy to develop. The Linux underpinnings might be rock solid, but if Vixta’s stated goal is bringing Linux to the masses, it’s the chrome that will make a difference.
