FingersTired of that mess of cords behind your computer? Fingers is a prototype created by Oof Design that keeps the untangled when you unplug your laptop. Made of acrylic, each slot is made by laser for different types of plugs. The device also raises the height of your laptop making it more ergonomic. We have practically become accustomed to the clutter that hides back there. If we get that organized, we may get around to throwing away those faded post-its with ancient reminders of chores that we never accomplished.

After they retained a licensed contract from Sanrio, they began designing a whole range of gadgets that includes a humidifier, mixer, fan, toaster, ice crusher, blender, and a coffee pot, just to name a few. The only thing more unsettling than seeing a kitchen full of Hello Kitty appliances is the fact that there are those who want them. Haewoojae

South Korean Sim Jae-Duck is the head of the World Toilet Association. In order to raise funds for over 2.6 billion worlwide who have no bathroom facilities, he is building a 1.6 million dollar house about 24 miles south of Seoul. Named Haewoojae, the 4,508 square foot cement and glass building contains two bedrooms, two guest rooms, and three deluxe toilets, of course. Panda Chair

Next time you receive those useless CDs from AOL, do what Spanish Designer Belen Hermosa did with his Panda Chair. It was recently unveiled at the International Furniture Fair in Valencia.  We’re not sure about the comfort factor, but the idea is a viable one. If you score enough of the useless discs, you could probably build an entire living room suite, including end tables and ottomans. Then you could recover your patio deck, build furniture for the kids’ treehouse, and start selling items at swap meets. Just you wait, IKEA, you have tentative competition.

Sharp LCDSharp has taken the same technology they use on their AQUOS TVs and will begin selling it for ASV LCDs on cell phones. Featuring a 1Seg tuner, it has the more than decent contrast ratio of 2000:1 on only 2.2-inches of display. The QVGA resolution is contained in a thin .68mm thickness. While we realize this might hike up the price of a mobile phone, it is nice to see the technology being applied to other uses. Contact Sharp for further information and availability.

Rubber Duck

Residents along the Loire River were treated to what has to be the largest rubber duckie on the planet during the recent le Lieu Unique and Biennial Estuaire. Created by artist Florentijn Hofman, the bird is constructed of inflatable, rubber-coated PVC and has its own pontoon and generator. At a size of 26 x 20 x 32 meters, Hofman claims that there is no political connotation, but rather “relieves mondial tensions as well as define them.” Be that as it may, that would be one scary quacker if you didn’t see it coming. (Note the size of people to the right of the duckie.)

Therma BladesSome NHL players will become guinea pigs in November to test Therma Blade’s new heated skate blades. Inventor Tory Weber claims that the prototypes cut down on friction up to 50% and allow players to skate faster with less energy needed. There is a resistor in the blade that heats it by battery to 5º C (~41º F,) regulated by a microprocessor in the heel. Apparently the warmth thickens the film of water between the ice and the blade and acts as a lubricant. We don’t know much about the way skates work. We thought that perhaps there would be less chaos at the hockey rink if the players’ feet were warmer.

Meet one of the first interactive mixed reality humanoid robots. Put on a special HMD (head-mounted display) and U-Tsu-Shi-O-Mi appears as an animated character that you can literally touch. The 3D avatar is made with skin that acts as a green screen and as users adjust their head angle and position, so does the robot. Created by Michihiko Shoji, the plans are for U-Tsu-Shi-O-Mi to enhance existing virtual reality and its first application will probably be in arcades, with household usage to come later. This brings on a whole new meaning of self-communication, doesn’t it?
