Obama AppWe already know that the Obama campaign is pretty savvy when it comes to the Internet. His team has further proved their point with the Obama ‘08 free iPhone application. Features include getting stats, connecting with other “friends” receiving local and national news, finding events, viewing videos and photos and finding out how O’Biden (thanks for that one, Sarah) feels about the issues. Available at iTunes App store, the application works with the original and iPhone 3G and iPod touch, and needs the 2.0 software update.

'007 Laptop

Sony’s ‘007 Laptop, in honor of Quantum of Solace, is about to arrive in a limited edition of 700. It features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 3G Internet connectivity, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, and a 13.3-inch LED backlit LCD. It also has a 128GB SDD or 320GB hard drive, a fingerprint reader, a Motion Eye camera and Blu-ray drive. At a price of about $4,000.00, it should be out later this month encased in a carbon fiber chassis. Sadly, it cannot shoot bullets out the back end or shake or stir your martini.

GPSMAP 640

Garmin has taken on a new line of devices with the GPSMAP 640 that not only has road navigation but a marine chart plotter as well. It comes preloaded with their BlueChart g2 data and City Navigator NT for North America. Of course, the case is waterproof and it has a 5.2-inch WVGA touchscreen and an intuitive interface. The 640 can receive XM WX satellite weather data in marine mode and XM NavTraffic information in automotive mode. Expect the GPSMAP in Q1 2009 with a MSRP of $1,199.99.

Nintendo DSi

So, as we’ve already reported, Nintendo has announced the DSi, a spiffy new iteration of the DS franchise. There’s the larger screens, smaller profile, music playback, SD card slot…But what’s got everybody in a kerfuffle about it is the 3MP camera embedded in the system, both on the top and between the screens. The burning question now is what exactly Nintendo plans to do with the system, and how they’re going to integrate the features. iTunes 8.01

We thought we were the only ones with issues with some of these smaller 8 issues, but obviously enough people were complaining that has pushed out a new version, iTunes 8.0.1, to address these things. We are happy that Genius is getting fixed, along with update checking. Here’s the full list:

  • Seamlessly plays the current song when creating a new Genius playlist.
  • Improves syncing spoken menus to iPod nano.
  • Addresses an issue of deleting HD TV episodes when downloading.
  • Improves checking for updates from the App Store
  • Improves accessibility with VoiceOver.
  • Addresses problems syncing Genius results to iPod.

Scareware Screen

Microsoft and Washington’s Attorney General Rob McKenna have filed suit against two Texas businesses that scare people into buying a Registry Cleaner XP service for $39.95. The action has been filed under the Computer Spyware Act. The Branch Software and Alpha Red messages resemble system warnings. McKenna is hoping that the lawsuit will make the “spyware purveyors” to cease the practice and pay customer restitution.

McKenna says the action “has yanked the fear factor dial out of the hands of businesses that use scareware as a marketing tool and have spun it toward them.”

Yamaha TSX-130Yamaha Japan’s new TSX-120 and 130 iPod docks are made with soft wood. Both have a 15W, 2ch amplifier output, two speakers, a frequency response of 60Hz ~ 20kHz, remote and FM tuner. The 130 also has USB drive connection and a CD drive for playback and recording. Japan gets this one first in December, with the price of the TSX-120 being ¥30,000 (~$ 300.00) and the TSX-130 with a ¥40,000 (~$ 400.00) price tag.

iBasketAnything that shortens our clothes washing chores is fine with us. Guopeng Liang designed the iBasket for the Electrolux 2008 Design Lab Competition. Hamper-shaped, the prototype automatically washes once there is enough weight in it. With a wireless connection, it has a remote monitor and control of wash cycle frequency by PC and IM notification to PC or mobile device when your clothes are done. We only hope the final product won’t be transparent so we are forced to see our dirty laundry.
