MP3 Capabilities Expand on Palm Devices Via Pocket Tunes
Posted by Alex Grahmann Categories: Handhelds, Music, Portable Audio / Video,
With the release of Pocket Tunes 3.1, Palm OS users now have the ability to play MP3s that use the Janus DRM standard for Windows Media 10. This unlocks the possibility of using Palm devices with popular MP3 services such as Rhapsody To Go, Napster To Go, and Yahoo! Music Unlimited. While most Palms inherently lack the memory capacity needed to take full advantage of such services (the 4GB LifeDrive being a possible exception), smaller-scale usage is still a plus. After all, with millions of songs available through these services, a few at a time is often enough.

Although not available until the end of the month, Target is now taking preorders for their own logo-branded iPod case. The design, called “Cosmic Flowers,” features the Target logo in the midst of a black and white floral pattern. Made of heat-sealed PVC, the case also includes screen protection, a Target-red wrist strap, and a lobster clamp. This should be great news for all of us who have been dying for a chance to offer free advertising to Target while keeping our iPod scratch-free.

All signs are pointing to Apple releasing an updated iBook in the very near future - possibly even today. This is good news, as the iBook has not seen any significant change since October of 2004. Many have been looking forward to the release of a widescreen iBook, which I wouldn’t mind, but there are many other things Apple could do to make the line more attractive without stepping on their PowerBook product. Heck, at least upgrade the hard drive and give us a bit more processing power if anything.

TiVo Tries New Form Of Interactive Commercials
Posted by Devin Categories: Home Entertainment, Misc. Tech,
TiVo knows that its customers skip commercials, and we’ve seen them try to get us involved in watching them by offering the “Thumbs Up” option on some commercials, allowing us learn more about a certain product, show, or movie simply by pressing the little green button. I can’t say I haven’t tried it once or twice merely to see what would happen when I pressed the button, but I can tell you for sure I most definitely won’t be trying TiVo’s latest form of interactive advertising. Soon, viewers will have the option of hitting a button during a commercial which will send their information to an advertising firm which will in turn add the viewer to a mailing list. No thanks TiVo…my mailbox is full of enough junk mail already.

Back to Basics has announced their egg and muffin toaster. It’s a simple - yet brilliant - fusion device that is able to toast an english muffin, poach an egg, and heat up a piece of ham all at the same time. I used to be addicted to these things, and as soon as it comes out I’ll have to plunk down the $49.95 for the convenience of popping in an egg, tossing in a muffin, and having a hot fresh breakfast ready in minutes with no effort.

Today seems to be a big day for great looking audio equipment. Tivoli just announced their Audio iSongBook, a Tivoli radio product featuring stereo speakers and an iPod dock. Tivoli is famous for making radios with excellent tuners and very clean crisp speakers. I can only imagine what they are going to do with stereo speakers and the iPod to provide the tunes. The iSongBook operates on AC or six AA-size batteries, and it features built-in battery charger to recharge AA-size NiMH and lithium-ion batteries. The iSongBook will be available for $329 in early October.

Eton and Porche Design have another winner with the P’7131 XM Satellite radio. The P’7131 while having an atrocious name is probably one of the sexiest radio’s I’ve ever seen in my life. With the smooth black exterior, the silver ring dials, and the white on black screen I’m more than sold. I’m not a big XM radio fan myself, but want to get one of these just so I can have it on my desk at work. The P’7131 features AM, FM, and Shortwave reception in addition to XM Satellite Radio.

PC Home Networking Software: Easy At Last

Posted by Sparky Categories: PC / Laptop, Software, Wireless / WiFi,
With Reuters reporting today that global PC shipments are up 16% in 2nd quarter of 2005 it’s no surprise that more and more people are joining the PC revolution. Particularly with major manufacturers providing sub-$400 PC combos a lot of families are getting a second computer - for the kids, a media center for the living room, or a laptop for the college bound young adult. Many of these users are unable to take full advantage of the home network they have at their disposal for file sharing, printing from a single printer, or utilizing secure wireless technologies. Luckily a company called Pure Networks has released a piece of software called Network Magic which helps simplify the process of setting up a home network, securing it against intrusions, and taking full advantage of Windows networking technologies. Network Magic completely sets up a small home network, shares out printers and scanners, and is able to automatically configure most routers (both wired and 802.11 technologies) to provide the household with a secure network and one click access to a variety of network features. Consumers and OEM’s alike should pay attention to this new company providing a great product for those just getting their second computer.
