AI has been hyped up like the world’s next superstar athlete, but when it comes time to perform, has it actually stuck the landing? In this episode, we dive into the state of AI today, breaking down what’s working, what’s failing, and how companies like Apple, Google, and OpenAI are shaping the future.

We discuss Apple Intelligence, its delayed rollout, and whether Apple’s privacy-first approach is actually hurting its AI capabilities. Plus, what’s going on with AI-generated images, the evolution of Siri, and the battle between Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and Apple’s attempts to keep up. And of course, we analyze whether companies are just slapping "AI" on everything from bird feeders to massage chairs to sell more products.

On top of that, we discuss T-Mobile’s partnership with Starlink and the conspiracy theories running rampant about Elon Musk tracking everything. Also, are we witnessing the slow demise of TikTok in the U.S.? Taylor Lorenz joins the discussion to break it all down.

Okay, hold on. Over a year ago, we reported that AOL would make it easier for customers looking to cancel their accounts. Apparently, someone didn’t get that memo. Vinny over at Insignificant Thoughts made the decision to cancel his AOL account, figuring that $14.95 per month could be spent in a much more beneficial way than giving it to AOL. He recorded his conversation with “John at AOL” and has made it available for all to hear. Truth be told, we got upset just listening to the atrocious service that Vinny received. Be sure to download the clip below to hear for yourself.

Office 2007 News: We talk about the Office 2007 name, the death of Microsoft FrontPage, and what Microsoft might have up it’s sleeve to replace their WYSIWYG editor in their next office suite.

PlayStation 3 Rumors: Will the PlayStation 3 be delayed to 2007? More importantly, will the thing cost you almost a grand just to get it home?

Gear Live Podcast Episode 14: Major Nelson, TiVo Series 3, DualCor cPC, Netomat Hub

This episode is packed with a ton of interviews that we shot at CES, including:

Major Nelson Interview: We had the opportunity to catch up with our friend Larry Hryb - Major Nelson to the layperson - to ask him about what his CES experience was like. Major had been pretty much tied to the Xbox area in the Microsoft booth, but he took a few minutes to talk to us about Fight Night 3, Dead Rising, and Street Fighter II on Xbox Live Arcade.

DualCor cPC: We have a look at the amazing DualCor cPC. This may turn out to be an OQO killer, as it is a handheld Windows XP computer that also runs Windows Mobile 5.0 on a separate processor, allowing the user to switch between the two OSes with the touch of an icon.

Netomat Hub Service: Netomat’s Hub is an online space where you can create “hubs” to get and share picture and text messages, as well as content such as news feeds and blogs with a friend or your own private group of friends. You and your friends can view and update your hubs using a PC or a mobile phone.

TiVo Series 3 First Look:We got some quality hands-on time with the forthcoming TiVo Series 3, TiVo’s first HD-capable DVR. The Series 3 unit has some cool new features, including a single-color, two-line OLED LCD display on the front of the unit that shows you what’s being recorded on each tuner. We interviewed Bob Pony of TiVo (TiVoPony on the TiVo Community forums) about what we can expect in the Series 3, so be sure to check out the video interview above. The quick and dirty is that it features built-in ethernet, an external SATA port for expanding your TiVo’s capacity, and that it will ship with a 250 GB hard drive.

Here’s how to get it:

Most of you reading this have probably subscribed to at least one podcast in your lifetime - hopefully ours is one of them. With the latest cell phone innovations in music playback, it was only a matter of time that we would be able to access content like this over our mobile devices. Roger Wireless and Melodeo to the rescue. They have constructed a podcast catalog that are available to Roger Wireless customers in Canada. Eliminating the need for PC hardware at all, you can take your cell phone and download directly to you handset. There had to be someone to pioneer it. So far, the feedback has not been good about the $5 a month service. However, we must applaud the idea.

iTunes Eyes Video Blogging, but is the Vlog Ready for Prime Time?

      <dc:subject>Features, Internet, Movies, Podcasts,</dc:subject>

Video Blogging, or Vlogging, is quietly gaining momentum in the weblog community. For those of you not in-the-know, Vlogging is basically taking the idea of podcasts to the next level. A video broadcast (yes, people also call them vodcasts) is placed into an RSS/Atom enclosure and syndicated around the web in the same way a regular blog works.

Apple has suspiciously added a form of video blogging support to its latest iTunes iteration. This is the first corporate endorsement of the fad/trend/media-revolution that I’ve seen so far. One of the biggest hurdles to the success of Vlogging has been the complexity and difficulty of taking video clips and getting them onto the web quickly. Traditional DV Cams require capturing, editing, encoding, and uploading before a finished video clip is online and ready for distribution. Webcams offer some relief but usually produce low quality video in tiny onscreen windows. The mobile aspect of blogging and photoblogging is another stymie for the video blog . In the U.S. today very few mobile devices offer decent video recording with the ability to upload or publish content to the web.

The issue of bandwidth is also a key to the success of the video blog. Traditional and photo blogs require very little bandwidth, as text and basic images are small in size. Video files are comparatively massive, especially when you consider syndicating these videos all over the web. The bandwidth costs associated with running a videoblog are potentially exponential compared to a text-only we.

Can video blogging displace TV news reporting? Will America be tuning in to bedroom versions of 60 Minutes on their PCs while televisions begin to collect dust? Could Google Video solve Vlogging’s bandwidth woes? Comment wars in 3,2,1…

2 GB, 4 GB iPod shuffle, 8 GB iPod mini, and iPod Color A Success

      <dc:subject>Smartphones, Podcasts, Portable Audio / Video, Software,</dc:subject>

The last few days have certainly been big news for the iPod and iTunes. Apple dropped the new iPod color to its stores, and released iTunes 4.9 to the public. This has sent a surprising number of ripples through the music and Apple communities. iPodLounge has surprised us and given a coveted “A” review rating to the new line of iPods and has a very exhaustive review of the new color players. With the new iTunes comes easy iPod support of podcasts, and the world agrees that aside from a few minor glitches its the one of the coolest things to happen to iTunes since, well, iTunes. Apple has also extended the RSS/XML format a little bit to enable chapters and other metadata to be included in the XML file to describe the podcast. Apple has of course also announced plans to give iPods away to qualifying students - what a great way to help grow their brand in what will become the influential market of tomorrow. Finally there are rumors floating around that the iPod shuffle is about to get a bump to 2GB and 4GB sizes, and the mini is going to get one of Hitachi’s new 8GB drives. All of this kind of ticks off this one Gear Live writer who just bought a (now suddenly out of date) 4th generation iPod not two weeks ago.

The install went smoothly (as most installs and upgrades do on OSX) and in minutes I was up and running with iTunes 4.9. Immediately upon opening the updated application of course we went to check out the preferences panel for the configuration options of the new podcast features. The preferences panel lets a user select how often to check for new podcasts, and how long to keep each episode for.

iTunes 4.9 And The Gear Live Podcast

Okay guys, I didn’t know that this many people were into our podcast show, but the amount of email I got asking why it wasn’t in there proved otherwise. Here is the skinny: Gear Live runs on Expression Engine - the CMS software that I feel is the best available on the market. That being said, there is some sort of odd problem with iTunes 4.9 reading our EE generated RSS feed. The feed works perfectly fine, and every other RSS aggregator/podcast software that I have tried today recognizes it perfectly. The people over at pMachine are looking into it, and hopefully soon you will see the Gear Live Podcast listed in the directory.

Apple Busts Out New iPod + iTunes 4.9

Apple announced a new line of iPods this morning: the iPod Color. The new generation of the iPods replaces the iPod Photo and brings a color screen to the black U2 edition of the iPod. The new iPods are available in 20GB and 60GB models and feature the same 15 hours of battery life that the old iPod Photos featured. Apple also dropped the price of their 1GB iPod Shuffle to $129, and dropped the new iTunes (4.9) for OS X on the masses. We are very interested in the podcasting capabilities of the new version of iTunes and will be checking it out shortly. Hopefully Apple will have pulled off the right blend of usability and customization to meet our demanding podcast needs. One thing I am not feeling is you can’t just add any podcast you would like to subscribe to - it has to be one Apple has in their catalog. Lame.

Analysts say “Erotic” Podcast Market is Underserved?

While 40% of the Internet-delivered audio shows focus on music, science, technology and comedy, the most popular category for users is erotica, according to Alex Nesbitt, president of Bella Ventures Inc. ‘The supply is not yet meeting market demands,’ he wrote in a just-released analysis titled, ‘The Podcast Value Chain Report.’”

In other words, we’re not sure what category is the most under-served. He also predicts that in the “near future” the market for podcasting tools and accessories will top $400 million. What with the hot trend towards podcasting and the already-booming Internet pr0n business sector, of course “adult” podcasts are popular. However, I wouldn’t put my chips on Erotic Podcasting as a sure bet, despite this apparent “popularity.”

Think of all the hand-wringing there’ll be when there’s “too much Porn on the Pods!”

It can’t be argued that the number one personal accessory right now is the cell phone, and just about everyone has one. Jason Ford, the General Manager of Sprint Games and Entertainment, sat down with us to give us a rundown on gaming, the Samsung A800, the LG MM-535, and Sprint’s EV-DO rollout. Click here to download the MP3, or you can just subscribe to the Gear Live Podcast feed.

iTunes 4.9 To Support Podcasts

      <dc:subject>Podcasts, Software,</dc:subject>

Earlier at the D: All Things Digital Conference, Steve Jobs made it known that the next version of iTunes will include built-in support for podcasts. To make that a bit clearer - iTunes 4.9 will have an option that will allow you to plug in the RSS feed URL of your favorite podcasts, which it will then use to fetch them out and download them directly to your library. No need for any third party software to do this for you any longer. What’s more, iTunes will provide a directory of podcasts in which producers can submit their work. Finally, Steve is even considering developing a model where content producers could sell their podcasts through iTunes. This is similar to what Google wants to do with video, but on the audio front. We can expect to see this new version of iTunes within the next 60 days.

So the Wayans Brothers are here at E3 to promote their new trading card/cell phone game “The Dozens”. It is basically a game where you swap “Your momma” jokes with a friend (or stranger for that matter), and score points based on the originality or hilarity of the diss. We got a few moments to speak with Shawn and Marlon Wayans about The Dozens, but they were more interested in making fun of all the E3 schwag I had on me. Click here to download the MP3, or you can just subscribe to the Gear Live Podcast feed.
