Gear Live Podcast 015: Office 2007 News, PlayStation 3 Rumors
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Announcements, Features, Microsoft, Podcasts, Software, Video Games,
We are ramping up our efforts on the multimedia front. Of course, we have started our weekly video show, The Bleeding Edge. Now, we are hitting you up on a daily basis with our audio podcast. The daily shows will be much shorter (think 5-10 minutes), and will just cover interesting tidbits we found throughout that day. In today’s episode:
- Office 2007 News: We talk about the Office 2007 name, the death of Microsoft FrontPage, and what Microsoft might have up it’s sleeve to replace their WYSIWYG editor in their next office suite.
- PlayStation 3 Rumors: Will the PlayStation 3 be delayed to 2007? More importantly, will the thing cost you almost a grand just to get it home?
Here’s how to get the show:

So you have this burning desire to commit every one of your hundreds of books into electronic form? Instead of wasting the better part of your life scanning the books one page at a time, or practically destroying them in order to accomplish the task faster, turn your sights to the Atiz BookDrive Book Scanner. The $35K scanner will automatically turn the pages of the inserted book and scan in whatever you request of it. Need to quickly plagerize a few pages for that school project you have coming up? Pop in the desired book, tell it how many pages you want scanned and away it goes.
Obviously the intended market for this scanner isn’t your average home user. Government institutions, libraries and schools are the intended recipients, and the BookDrive should help save countless hours of tedious work. Other book scanners exist on the market, but one of the main selling points of the BookDrive is that it’s portable. Rather than drag a huge pile of heavy books to a stationary book scanner, tote the scanner to the books.

In a follow-up to a story we posted last week, the folks over at OSx86 Project are back online and the forums have been restored. It seems that Apple was primarily concerned with just a few posts that had some links pointing to some warez that the Apple Legal Department didn’t take to kindly to. In the end it seems things were settled amicably and nobody’s feelings, animals or children were hurt in the process.
Apple doesn’t “have it in” for our site; they were simply concerned with a few links posted by our members. Those links have been removed and we’re back.
You can read the full story as well as OSx86’s point of view on how news of this event was misreported by the media, at their site. Welcome back OSx86!

LEDs (light emitting diodes) are literally everywhere today. In fact, if you were to turn off the lights in just about any room in your home, odds are that a little glowing LED would be emanating from some object. With the theory that a little excess never hurt anyone, BLOOM! introduces their lineup of LED flower pots that are designed to light up your boring old plants with a splash of color. Although you can get their smallest pot with low-voltage halogen lighting (why even bother?), their two larger pots (26-inches and 41-inches in diameter) are both fitted with LEDs. There are four, 1-watt, white LEDs (Luxeons maybe?) utilized in the 26-inch pot, whereas the larger pot has twelve colored LED’s installed in a rotating ring. Should the need arise, the LEDs are even replaceable, but with a listed lifespan of 50,000 hours, their demise won’t be anytime soon.
A steep $199 is the price to pay for the privilege of owning the 26-inch pot, and we can only wonder what the 41-incher will set you back.

CVG reports that SOCOM 4 and a new God of War will be coming to the PS3. SOCOM 4 is rumored to be due out at PS3’s launch, while God of War is a bit further behind and won’t see a release until later on. Also, look for SOCOM 4 to be on display at E3. Additionally, not abandoing its PS2 base, Sony is also rumored to be working on PS2 versions of the upcoming titles. We think that’s a good idea considering how many people own PS2’s. Sony certainly won’t abandon the PS2 platform anytime soon.

Yet another fighter coming for the PSP - and we’re excited about this one. We’ve been looking forward to a new Tekken but unfortunately, this isn’t a brand new game. Rather, it’s an enhanced version of the most recent arcade title in the series.
Two new characters from the arcade version, Dragunov and Lili, allow PSP owners the chance to try out some new moves. With the return of classic fighter, Armor King, the list of combatants goes up to a jaw-shattering 30 characters, each ready to fight across 19 ass-kicking stages.
Tekken on the go? Sure it may not be entirely new, but we’re still looking forward to this one.

That’s right - everyone’s favorite interactive brawler from the Dreamcast is back, this time on the PSP. The 3D fighting series is a quick, frantic title that features interactive environments. Of course, the PSP version’s going to have a number of improvements.
Capcom is promising a number of enhancements and revisions for both games, starting with ad hoc wireless multiplayer battles using just one copy of the game. Both titles will also feature a number of new weapons and a new camera system designed with the PSP in mind; players will be able to toggle between wide, close, and midrange views of the action in the middle of a fight.
I can’t wait to get my hands on this one.
