Meg Ryan’s Journalistic Ambition

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Movies, Features,

Meg RyanMeg Ryan always wanted to be a journalist.

The 52-year-old actress had a passion for writing as a teenager and only turned to acting as a way of paying her way through college. "My main aim, at 18, was to become a journalist. I only started acting - in commercials - to pay my way through college in New York," she said.

The Sleepless in Seattle star was "intimidated" by everyone around her when she started working and struggled to "understand" her co-stars. "I was 19 when I was in my first film, Rich And Famous. I played Candice Bergen's daughter and only had about ten lines, which I would repeat constantly every night. When I traveled to Los Angeles, it was the first time I had ever been on a plane. I was intimidated by everyone in those days. If you ever see the film, you will see me shaking in every scene. I did not understand actors. It was overwhelming," she told The Sun.

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon's parents banned her from moving to Hollywood because it is "where crazy people live."

The Walk the Line star first started acting in Tennessee when she was 12 and quickly found herself getting cast in more and more parts, but her parents - who are both medical professionals - were wary of her pursuing it as a career while she was still a teenager. Speaking at a Young Women's Conference held at Brentwood School in Los Angeles this weekend, she said, "I started doing commercials when I was 12. One day there was an advert in the paper that said, 'Do you want to be in a movie?' I was like, 'Heck yeah I want to be in a movie!' I grew up in Nashville, they're not making a lot of movies there. My dad's a doctor and my mom is a professor of pediatric nursing. So I thought I was going to be a doctor. I was sure I was going to be. And then the universe just showed me this different possibility. Thank God my parents did this, but they told me I had to stay in school. I was allowed to work in the summers but I couldn't work in the school year. They said, 'You're not moving to California, that's where crazy people live.'"

Leonardo DiCaprio and Bradley CooperBradley Cooper used to be jealous of Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Silver Linings Playbook actor had a memorable encounter with the Hollywood A-lister when he worked as a hotel doorman and felt "worlds apart" from the star, who is now a close showbiz pal. "I worked as a doorman all through grad school. I remember taking Leonardo DiCaprio up to his room, and I was in the elevator with him and, like, seven of his friends. It was around the time of Titanic. And I remember this guy who looked like a kid, even though we were about the same age, he looked like a little boy. I remember thinking how I was three feet away from this guy, and we were worlds apart," Bradley confessed.

Russell Brand ‘Would Rather Be a Drug Addict’ Than Be Famous

Russell BrandRussell Brand claims he "would rather be a drug addict" than be famous.

The provocative British comedian - who has been sober for more than 10 years after previously battling heroin addiction - is "jealous" of his former self and confessed he would give up his current success to get back his old life on narcotics during an interview for his new BBC Three documentary, Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery.

"This is when you know it's a disease. It doesn't matter that I was in that flat in Hackney and now I'm in the Savoy. I'm jealous of me then. It doesn't make a difference to me. The money, the fame, the power, the sex, the women - none of it. I'd rather be a drug addict," Russell declared after watching old footage of himself doing drugs.

Despite his comments, the Arthur actor acknowledged the devastating effects of drugs, and explained how his addiction blighted his life. "Heroin is a greedy drug, it'll take everything. First it'll take your money. Then it'll take your friends, your family, your car, your house. Then it's going to take bits of your body. In the end I used to be scoring with people that had eyes missing, limbs missing. You'll take it until it takes your life. It'll take everything until the last thing and you'll gladly give it that rather than give up the drugs," he admitted. The 37-year-old star is lobbying for society to treat drug addicts differently and the documentary chronicles his own troubled past as well as his present activism.

Dating Failure Josh Hutcherson

Josh HutchersonJosh Hutcherson was a dating failure at school.

Despite becoming one of the biggest heartthrobs in the world after starring in The Hunger Games, Josh admits he wasn't a huge hit with the girls when he was at high school because he is naturally shy.

"It's hard to believe, but I'm very shy when it comes to talking to girls. I don't know why I get so nervous because it's so easy, it's just talking and I talk all the time. But it's terrifying," he said.

Josh is single at the moment and although he isn't actively searching for a girlfriend he knows what sort of woman he wants to date: "It's important for a girl to be herself. I don't want someone who is trying to make me think she's a certain way when she's something different. Someone who is comfortable in their own shoes and who is down for having a fun time. I used to have a very specific type - dark hair, dark eyes, dark skin. Now I'm more into the beauty of a person."

Nicki Minaj Won’t be Poor Again

Nicki MinajNicki Minaj never wants to be poor again. The 29-year-old singer had a tough childhood with an abusive father and grew up without a great deal of material possessions but the "Starships" hitmaker believes her upbringing made her even more determined to be successful.

"In the business you have to be used to really having all the doors closed. So when you have a childhood where you are used to being told 'no' and you're used to not being able to get the best Christmas gifts, you are accustomed to not always getting what you want. But then you become accustomed to working for it. I never want to go back to being poor. Once you have a taste of that you will always be driven. I know what that felt like and I don't want to feel it ever again. So yeah, I mean my childhood was crazy but it got me to the point where I had so much faith in whatever I was doing. I just always feel where there's a will there's a way and I live my entire life that way now."

Liam Hemsworth: I’m Not a Good Worker

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Movies,

Liam HemsworthLiam Hemsworth has had a lot of jobs, but insists he is "not a good worker."

The Hunger Games actor had many different occupations working on Phillip Island where he grew up -- off the coast of Australia -- but admits he didn't like getting up early when he worked for his brother Luke laying carpets.

"I've done a billion different jobs. I worked for Luke laying carpets for six months, but I'm not a good worker, though. I don't like early mornings. I'd get up and be grumpy, while he's more of a wake-up-at-the-crack-of-dawn kind of guy and he's buzzing at 6am. I'm more like, 'Don't even talk to me!'"

Other jobs which Liam, 22, had were very varied, from working at a bowling alley to looking after animals: "I've done laboring jobs, digging holes, I've worked in a bowling alley. I've been a baker. I've been a park ranger for animals. I did almost every job you could do on Phillip Island!"

Adele ‘Chose Party Over Record Deal’

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Music, Kind Acts, Parties,

AdeleAdele reportedly refused to sign a record deal because she was too busy planning her birthday party.

The "Someone Like You" singer wanted to celebrate her 18th birthday with a bash to remember and refused to let the offer of a contract get in the way, according to school friend Allan Rose.

"It was typical Adele. Her pals were more important," he said.

Allan met Adele at the BRIT school - which also counts Jessie J, Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis amongst its past pupils - where he says everyone knew she was destined for great things: "It was clear she was going to be a star. Some people were that step above everyone else, and Adele was one of them. She was just naturally musically gifted."

Jon Hamm Worked in Porn

Jon HammJon Hamm used to work in the porn industry.

The 40-year-old actor - who is best known for playing Don Draper in Mad Men - took on several different jobs as he struggled to land acting work, with his stint as a set designer on adult movies among the most memorable:

"Essentially, I had to move furniture around sweaty, naked people. It wasn't a great job but the money was useful. I had to get by - I wanted to be an actor. Let me just stress there was no penetration - it was soft-core porn."

Jon - who also worked as a bartender, writer and teacher - considered quitting acting following a "bleak" period where he was rejected for many roles and was dropped by his agent. "It was bleak - that was part of a three-year period where I was solely rejected. I had given myself 'til my 30th birthday. I moved out to LA when I was 25 and I figured if I can't make it in five years of trying, then it's time to pack up."
