While it wasn’t the most-watched program last night, the 2008 Teen Choice Awards did earn nice numbers for the under-35 set. Meanwhile, CBS’s repeat roster was the winner in both categories yesterday.
8pm
- The Big Bang Theory* (6.5 million. 2.2/8 in 18-49) climbed 900,000; How I Met Your Mother (6.4 million, 2.2/7) improved by 1.1 million.
- The American Gladiators finale (2.0/6) pulled in 5.3 million.
- Approximately 4.4 million screamed for the Jonas Brothers on the 2008 Teen Choice Awards (1.5/5).
- High School Musical: Get in the Picture* (2.9 million, 0.8/3) took a big hit thanks to that other teen program.
- Gossip Girl* (1.1 million. 0.4/2) only lost 100,000.

A Final Bow for the Gladiators?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, Editorial,

In my estimation, NBC has always been something of a ride-it-till-the-wheels-fall-off kind of network. Habitually in fourth place behind all the other major networks, the channel is always striving for a first-place hit. For a brief moment in the winter of the writers’ strike, NBC found television gold in the form of a re-make.
More than twelve million tuned in for the January premiere of the first season of the re-vamped American Gladiators and NBC suddenly had a hit on its hands. Instead of playing it cool or playing it safe, the network went full steam ahead into a second season. Way back in April, before season two’s May premiere, NBC announced tentative plans to bring the show back in the summer of 2009 for yet a third season.
But now the second season of the show has arrived, has been aired and has ended. Will NBC still bring this brutal physical reality competition back for another turn in the TV spotlight?

MONDAY (7/14)
- Top Gear (BBC, 8pm): Season premiere. “A game of car soccer is played.” No wonder kids are too fat these days. They can’t even get out of their car to actually kick a ball!
- American Gladiators (NBC, 8pm): “In the ladies tilt, a student tries to make the grade against a future figure skater.” As we’ve learned from Dancing with the Stars, figure skaters come with an unfair advantage.
- The Closer (TNT, 9pm): Season 4 premiere. “Fritz and Brenda’s new duplex forbids the presence of pets, but that doesn’t stop Brenda from keeping Kitty on the premises.” If Kitty is the pet, what’s Fritz?
- Saving Grace (TNT, 10pm): Season 2 premiere. “Grace gets busy on her day off: She works to unlock the secrets of her her haunted past, but instead ends up apprehending a criminal on the FBI’s Most Wanted list.” And I’ll bet she doesn’t get paid for doing all that work on her own time.

- 46664: A Concert for Nelson Mandela (VH1, 9pm): Those helping to celebrate Mandela’s life outside bars include performers who should be behind them (e.g. Amy Winehouse).
- Verminators (Discovery, 10pm): “The source of a roach infestation at an apartment building shocks Mike.” There’s a reason why they say ignorance is bliss.
