America’s Next Top Model:  Cycle 8: The Girl Who Cries All The Time

Tyra The girls settle back at home after Samantha’s elimination.  Diana and Whitney bond over being the only two plus-sized girls around.  It’s a unique struggle having to worry about all the ‘sample-sizes’ that are available at the photo shoots.  Meanwhile, Jaslene finally seems to have found a sympathetic ear in good-natured Cassandra.

The girls later receive some Tyra mail alerting them to another ‘cut’ the next day.  Followers of ANTM know what that means:  Model Makeover!!  As we have learned from previous seasons, this can unfortunately be a hit or miss day.  While the average woman would relish the opportunity to have an expert redo them, (aspiring) models are a rare breed.  Some girls always think they know better.  But of course as we all know, if they

did

know better…they’d already be models.  Right?

A good number of the girls actually had it easy that day—their changes weren’t terribly dramatic.  The stylists just chopped off a few inches from Jaslene’s long mane and gave Whitney a new long, wavy ‘do to replace her weave.  But remember the Russian, Natasha?  Her fried blonde hair was dyed chocolate brown.  Cassandra had her ‘wig’ cut off and was given a Diana Ross-esque afro.  Renee was a little bit upset (again) when her hair was shorn ala Yoanna House (ANTM, Cycle 2).  But no one had any more reason to be upset than spikey-haired blonde, Jael.  After having sat 8 long hours waiting for extensions to be tightly braided into her hair, the stylists decided to go a different route altogether.  The braids were then taken out and her hair was clipped Rosemary’s Baby style.  The only problem for me is that her hair ended up looking like just like Sarah’s.

And then there was Brittany.  Yes, yes—she did also have a painful braiding experience (she’s now a bushy-haired, redhead), but her experience didn’t come anywhere near Jael’s.  And while Jael stopped tearing up after she left the salon chair, Brittany complained all night long.  Eventually exasperated by her whining, Whitney got in Brittany’s face and explained to her what real problems were.  Coincidentally, Jael got a phone call from home that helped put everything into perspective.  She found out that a very close friend of hers had died from a drug overdose.  Although she had every reason to go home…Jael decided to stay and stick it out.  She hoped the competition would be a nice distraction for her.

For their challenge of the week, the girls met up with reps from CoverGirl and Seventeen magazine.  The ladies would have to race around a beautiful garden while putting on makeup in a timed competition.  The girl with the winning style would get a photo spread (along with two of her friends) in Seventeen magazine.  But before the challenge even began, Brittany was already complaining about a stomach bug.  Ironically, it was Jael who assured her that she would make it through.  Despite Brittany’s complaints throughout the way, Cassandra was the one eventually disqualified for not finishing on time.  And once again, Brittany managed to be victorious.  She then picked Sarah and Jael to join in on her prize.  Afterwards, Whiny Renee started at it again.  Why, oh why, does Brittany win everything??

Back at the house, Renee continued on her I Hate Brittany campaign and tried to recruit other members.  If she wasn’t busy staring at her, Renee was telling anyone who would listen that Brittany was fake and overemotional.  When eventually confronted by Brittany, Renee claimed that she has never been anything but ‘nice and genuine’ to her.  But she then she accused Brittany of still acting like she’s in high school despite being 21.  Wait a second.  Don’t most 21-year-olds still act like they are in high school?  As Renee walked away, Brittany told her that it didnt’t matter because she was still going to ‘kick her a**’Go Brittany!  I don’t even know if I like you, but that was pretty darn funny!  Renee finished off by giving Brit the finger.

The girls later met up with Jay Manuel for their photo shoot of the week.  The models learned they would not only be the ‘treats’ of their pics, but that they’d be covered in them.  Oh—and they were also going to be nude.  Cue Brittany to have another freak out moment.  She immediately started tearing up wondering how upset her parents would be.  C’mon.  Didn’t she know that there’s always a nudity shoot?

In the end, the girls really didn’t need to worry.  As vulnerable as they felt during their shoots, their photos overall weren’t extremely revealing.  And of course, we knew we could count on Brittany to overcome all her pain and adversity to rock her ‘Banana Split’ shoot.  Then there was Jael.  Despite all her real grief, she managed to have fun with her ‘Birthday Cake’ shoot.  Former photographer, Sarah, also stopped second guessing herself and impressed the crew with her ‘Hard Candy’ pics.  Other girls did not have as sweet of a time though.  Cassandra (Jelly Beans) came out looking completely stiff and lost her neck altogether.  Diana (Gummy Bears) came off extremely insecure posing with her plus-sized body while Whitney (Chocolate Kiss) struggled to put on a graceful face.

As if it was hard to predict, Brittany was the big winner this week.  The judges all agreed that her pics could immediately be seen in a high-fashion magazine.  Those not on a sugar high - and marked for possible elimination - were Diana and Cassandra.  The judges felt that Diana and her body needed to be standing out strong her in photos.  Unfortunately, all she had managed to do thus far was fade into the background.  As for Cassandra, the judges were aware of her beautiful personality (anyone who tolerates Jaslene apparently has a heart of gold) but they had yet to see that in a photo.  Ultimately, they felt that Cassandra’s spark was gone.  LOSER:  Cassandra
