obamabush

After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the US’s economy took a big hit. At the time, then President George Bush thought a stimulus(tax rebate) would help the economy recover. After two years of analysis, the government decided that their plan to “inject” money to the economy did nothing to help it’s condition. It didn’t help.

Gov. Paterson Proposes iPod Tax

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Home Entertainment, Movies, Music,

iTunes logoNew York’s Governor David Paterson is trying to come up with creative ways to pad the state’s $15.4 billion deficit. One of these is an “iPod tax” that would charge for downloaded music and other “digitally delivered entertainment services.” In addition, cable and satellite TV services, movie tickets, taxis, soda, beer, wine, cigars and massages will also be taxed. The proposal must still get legislative approval and we expect that if it passes, there may be an influx of New Yorkers flooding to places like New Jersey to get their tunes.

Coal Industry To Be Bankrupted

Posted by Sal Traina Categories: Editorials, US Economy,

It doesn’t matter that nearly 50% of our home electric comes from coal. The predicted winner of today’s Presidential Election, Democrat Barack Obama, wants to punish coal companies, and other industrial markets, with Cap and Trade. This will slow, or maybe even reverse economic progress in the United States. The predicted loser, Republican John McCain, also supports cap and trade, but not to the extent Obama does. Either way, cap and trade never worked.

Wealth Distribution = Socialism

Socialism, since it’s birth, has been centered around the idea of more government control and distribution of wealth, or “spreading the wealth around,” as Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama likes to say. What I like to say is, you can put lipstick on socialism, but it’s still socialism.

How do people believe his campaign’s spin on Obama’s own words that he wants to “spread the wealth?” I can’t believe that with only eight days left until the election, this 2001 Barack Obama interview is only now starting to make it’s way around the internet and other outlets.(not the mainstream media…of course).

Some Advice For Joe The Plumber

Posted by Sal Traina Categories: Editorials, Elections, Media, Taxes,

Joe The Plumber

If you don’t know who Joe The Plumber is, you must not watch the news, read the paper, or listen to talk radio. The guy, whose now famous meeting with Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama, is the talk of the town. You can see who he is, and why he’s so popular now, in one of my earlier blogs.

I found an interesting article that would interest Joe The Plumber, who’s real name is Joe Wurzelbacher. It basically states that if Wurzelbacher wants to achieve his goal of buying the business he’s working for, he’s going to have trouble competing for federal contracts.

Helio Castroneves Indicted for Tax Evasion

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Sports, Television, Legal Issues,

Helio CastronevesUPDATE: Castroneves was acquitted on six counts of tax evasion. A mistrial was declared on the seventh count.

Have we learned nothing from Richard Hatch and Wesley Snipes?

, the former winner of Dancing with the Stars, was indicted today for federal tax evasion. According to the indictment obtained in Miami, the 33-year-old underpaid the government between 1999-2004.

Helio, along with along with his sister (Katiucia Castroneves) and lawyer, are currently being accused of hiding over $5 million of the race car driver’s earnings. The trio allegedly tried “to conceal and disguise the true and correct amount”  by using an offshore Panamanian shell corporation. Each defendant faces charges of conspiracy “for the purpose of impeding, impairing, obstructing, and defeating the lawful government functions of the Internal Revenue Service.”

According to the Miami Herald, all three are expected to appear in federal court tomorrow morning. Convictions on all counts could equate to approximately 30 years in prison per person.

Wesley Snipes Gets Three Years in Jail

Wesley SnipesIf there’s anying we’ve learned from Survivor’s Richard Hatch, its that government hates tax evaders.  After failing to pay what he owned, the reality show contestant was sent to the pokey for a nice long stay.  (Hatch is not expected to complete his 4+ year sentence until October 2009.)

Unfortunately, was either not a fan of the CBS show or he just didn’t heed the warnings.  Today, the Blade actor was sentenced to 3 years in prison for failure to file tax returns.  Back in February, Snipes was found not guilty of other tax fraud and conspiracy charges.

Despite personal letters from fellow actors (Denzel Washington, Woody Harrelson) asking for possible probation, Snipes was given the maximum sentence by a U.S. District Court Judge in Florida.  Snipes also paid $5 million of the reported $41 million he owes at the hearing today.

So, did you e-File this year?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Internet,

We figured it was time to start throwing polls into the mix here at Gear Live, as it’s an oft requested feature from our readers. That being said, now that we are just shy of a week after tax time (you did remember to file your taxes, right?) and we want to know if you guys take advantage of the e-File method of doing thing, or if you rely on the more traditional practice of mailing everything in to the IRS in a -style envelope. How geeky do you keep it? Let us know.
