It’s that time of the year where we can freely get down on junk food, trash talk, and look forward to the commercials just as much as the big game. We're talking about the Super Bowl (oh, and don't forget to enter our Big Game Giveaway!) Each year millions upon millions are dumped on commercials for mere marketing purposes.
Without a doubt, Volkswagen had one of the most successful commercials last year (see video after the jump to jog your memory) and is aiming to repeat its success again this year staying with the Star Wars theme. However, Volkswagen is not the only one fighting for airtime during the big game. Honda, Acura, and Cadillac have aired their Super Bowl commercials early this year and I want to focus your attention on the creativity of the ads.
Manufacturers know that millions will be watching the game on the 5th, and one would think that they would put effort into creating an entertaining commercial. Well one would think, but that’s not always the case. Let’s take a look at the Cadillac ATS spot, above.
Motorola has released a teaser for the forthcoming Xoom tablet.
"2011 Looks a lot like 1984. One Authority. One design. One way to work. It's time for more choices," says the clip.
It seems to be a shot at Apple, with the text of the video appearing over an image of a globe sporting the iPad maker's signature white ear buds.
The preview advertises the Xoom's speed, boasting its dual-core 1GHz processor, 1080p HD video playback, and 3G upgradable to 4G. It also emphasizes the tablet's flexibility. It will run on Android 3.0 Honeycomb and use Adobe Flash Player. The Xoom will also have a five-megapixel rear-facing camera and a two-megapixel front-facing camera. Apple's next-generation iPad is also rumored to include dual-facing cameras.
In anticipation of the holidays, and undoubtedly the upcoming Superbowl, ESPN has released their digital Ultimate Remote. The one-device-fits-all works with TVs, DVD players, TiVos, set top boxes and probably all of your home theater equipment. Simple to set up, it also has one-touch wireless access to gamecasts, fantasy leagues, and sport news, stats, scores and other information. The WiFi network has a weather widget on the home page according to your zip code and updates new equipment codes by itself. It’s almost Superbowl time again, and CEA predicts that before the big game on Feb. 3, 2.4 million hi-def TVs will be purchased. Tim Herbet, Senior Market Research Director said that other technologies are also influenced, i.e. PC to check stats, IM with friends, and bet on the game. The survey also came to the conclusion that 13% of those who watch SB XLII will also use their cell phone for stats and IMs. Personally, some of us just dig the commercials.
