iOS 4 Golden Master SDK released to developers

For all you iPhone and iPad devs out there, the iPhone Developer Portal has just been updated with the iOS GM seed, alongside the GM seed of the iOS 4 SDK. Remember, iPhone OS has been renamed iOS, for anyone who is confused. The software build is 8A293, while the SDK build is 10M2262. Apple announced earlier today at WWDC that iOS 4 will officially launch on June 21, available as a free upgrade for iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch users—and that’s the first time that a major update to iOS has been made available for free to the iPod touch! The iPhone 4 launches three days later.

iPhone OS 4 renamed iOS 4

Apple has decided to retire the iPhone OS name with version 4.0, as they’ve just announced at the WWDC 2010 keynote. The new name will be iOS 4. It makes perfect sense, since the iPad runs iOS as well (as does the iPod touch,) and isn’t a phone.
Facebook video chat to be integrated into iPhone OS 4.0?

Looks like Facebook will be readying video chat on their service, similar to what Google has done with Google Chat within Gmail. Even cooler, though, is that an eagle-eyed developer just sent us information saying that he found code within the latest iPhone OS 4.0 beta that suggests that this video chat service will be embedded into the iPhone software, ready for use by the next iPhone (iPhone HD? iPhone Pro?) Of course, take this info with a grain of salt. As we all know by now, the upcoming iPhone will have a front-facing camera, which is perfect for video chatting with others who also have the device. Even more interesting, though, is that since it is tied to Facebook, you should—in theory-be able to video chat with users of other phones that have front-facing cameras (like the Sprint EVO 4G) if they also build in the Facebook video chat service.
Now this all sounds great - but we seriously hope that video chatting isn’t limited to Facebook contacts. Let’s bring iChat to the iPhone, finally.

ATT finally announces iPhone tethering plan. And it sucks.

So, earlier we told you all about the new AT&T data plans, and mentioned that if you were currently on an unlimited plan, you could keep it, and AT&T will just consider you grandfathered in. Now here is where it gets interesting—after three years, AT&T has finally announced a tethering plan for the iPhone, which will go live with iPhone OS 4.0 is released. The thing is, if you wanna use it, you must leave your unlimited data plan behind, even though the tethering cost is an extra $20 per month. Instead, you have to move to the DataPro plan, which is $25 per month for 2GB of data, and $10 for each additional gigabyte of data used if you go over.
Now, read that again. AT&T is going to charge you $20 for the privilege of tethering. That $20 doesn’t get you any extra data usage—you are still relegated to the 2GB of data that you get from your $25 per month. In other words, AT&T is charging you a fee to use the data you already paid for. That is completely ridiculous. If you pay $25 for 2GB of data, and blow through all 2GB on your iPhone, that is cool with them. However, if you pay $25 for 2GB of data and blow through it while tethered to your computer, they expect you to pay an extra $20, even though on their end, you’ve used 2GB of data—no more, no less—in both scenarios.
This is obviously asinine to anyone on the outside of AT&T looking in. The fact that AT&T wants to charge you an extra fee just because you want to use the data that you;ve already paid for in a certain way just screams that they don’t understand true customer service. If you are grandfathered in with unlimited usage, they won’t allow you to pay the $20 tethering fee. If you switch so that you can tether, the fee is just there to make them more money—and you can never go back to your unlimited plan once you leave it.
iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 reveals AT&T tethering option

So check this out, we’ve been waiting for iPhone tethering since the original device, and when Apple built tethering into iPhone OS 3.0, we figured that was where our dreams would turn to reality—but of course, in the US, this is AT&T we’re dealing with, which means…we are still waiting a year later. However, in the just-released iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4, there’s finally an option to enable tethering, and when you tap it, you are instructed to contact AT&T at 611 or to visit the AT&T website to add tethering to your account.
Obviously, there’s been progress here. Still, no word from AT&T as to when they will give us tethering. Also interesting that this news comes well after the launch of the iPad 3G, as we’re sure that many iPhone owners that bought the 3G model of the iPad would have just gone with a Wi-Fi model if they knew tethering was around the corner, right?

For all you iPhone and iPad devs out there, you can now head on over to the iPhone Developer Portal to grab iPhone OS 4 beta 4, which Apple just released, alongside beta 4 of the SDK. The software build is 8A274b, while the SDK build is 10M2252. Apple is right on time, continuing to deliver iPhone OS 4.0 betas about two weeks apart from each other, every other Tuesday. It should drop down to weekly releases sometime soon here, what with the iPhone Pro rumored to make its debut sometime next month.

iPhone and iPad devs, head on over to the iPhone Developer Portal, because Apple has just released iPhone OS 4 beta 3, alongside beta 3 of the SDK. The software build is 8A260b, while the SDK build is 10M2247. Again, Apple is right on time, continuing to deliver iPhone OS 4.0 betas about two weeks apart from each other. We will know that things are getting a bit more serious when they drop it down to weekly intervals.
Wi-Fi Sync: Wireless iPhone and iPad syncing app

Wi-Fi Sync is an iPhone app that we are absolutely hoping and praying makes it into the App Store. Why? Well, take a look at the video above. Basically, it solves a problem that we’ve been begging Apple to solve for years now—we want to be able to sync our devices with our computers over the network, rather than having to be tethered to a USB connection just to get our latest tunes and apps onto our phones and iPads. Wi-Fi Sync seems to be a nice, easy, and elegant solution to making that happen. You just pair your computer with your phone through the Wi-Fi Sync software, and you are good. Our only fear is that Apple will reject the app, since you’d think if they wanted Wi-Fi syncing to be available on Wi-Fi devices like the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, they’d have already done it. Still, we’re keeping our fingers crossed.

Hey, all you iPhone and iPad developers out there, Apple just released iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 2 software with the SDK. The software build is 8A248c, and the SDK build is 10M2240, and comes just about two weeks after the initial iPhone OS 4.0 beta was released. Grab it now in the iPhone Dev Center.
iPhone OS 4.0 already jailbroken

Looks like the jailbreak app developer community can get to work on porting their apps to iPhone OS 4.0, as the current beta has already been jailbroken. However, if you aren’t a developer, don’t go trying to mess around with the redsn0w 0.9.5 beta, as this is purely a dev release. It currently only works on Mac OS X and with an iPhone 3G running iPhone 4.0 beta 1, but that’s good enough to get the devs started on getting everything up to snuff for the official release this summer.
