Portia de Rossi Struggled to Understand Her Sexuality

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Television, Features,

Portia de RossiPortia de Rossi "didn't want" to be a lesbian.

The 40-year-old actress was very nervous about publicly coming out, something she did in 2005, because she always thought that being gay was "strange" and also because she didn't know any famous women who were openly lesbians. In a revealing interview on The Conversation With Amanda De Cadenet, she said, "I just didn't want to be a lesbian. I'd never met one for a start and I just thought they were strange and that they hated men and they were very serious and I had these ridiculous images in my head and there were no out celebrities or politicians or anybody that I could look to and go, 'Oh, I could be like that.' There was nobody that I could say, 'I could date her and I want to be like her.' I just kind of thought I don't want to live like this. I don't have to, I don't need to, I just shut down the emotional life."

Not coming out had a very negative effect on Portia's life. The actress battled different eating disorders while she was starring in Ally McBeal from 1998 to 2002, and she believes they were symptoms of her hiding her sexuality. "The thing that kept me company was my eating disorder. It was like a lover, it was like somebody who never ever left me. Like a thought that would always keep me excited, interested and focused. It's adrenaline," she explained.

Ellen and Portia Rule Out Kids

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrity Babies, Features,

Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneresEllen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi don't want children. The chat show host and the Arrested Development actress are blissfully happy together and while Portia, 40, admits they have talked about kids, they ultimately decided it's not for them.

"There comes some pressure in your mid-30s, and you think, Am I going to have kids so I don't miss out on something that other people really seem to love? Or is it that I really genuinely want to do this with my whole heart? I didn't feel that my response was 'yes' to the latter. You have to really want to have kids, and neither of us did. So it's just going to be me and Ellen and no babies - but we're the best of friends and married life is blissful, it really is. I've never been happier than I am right now," Portia told Out.

Ellen and Portia have been married since 2008 and despite their fame, Portia insists they are just like any other happily married couple: "We've settled into happily married life. We really support each other in whatever we're doing and we're incredibly happy, which is why you don't see us in the press so much. There's no drama to report."

Portia de Rossi Taking Ellen’s Name

Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres on their wedding dayActress Portia de Rossi is taking on her wife ’ surname.

The 37-year-old actress - who married the talk show host almost two years ago - filed a petition in a Los Angeles court to formally become Portia DeGeneres. “Petitioner is taking the last name of her spouse,” court papers state.

Portia signed the documents in March this year and filed them in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, but the name change won’t be official until a hearing takes place on September 23. Although Portia is cementing the couple’s love for one another by changing her name, it doesn’t look as if children are on the cards for them

Ellen, 52, recently revealed she and Portia have no plans to start a family: “I don’t think we’re going to have kids. We have animals, and we love them. And, you know, we are brand new aunts. Her brother and his wife just had a baby girl who’s a month old now, and it’s fun to be a part of that. It’s just a huge responsibility, and I don’t know that that’s something we want to take on. We’re very happily married without children.”

Portia and Ellen married in front of 30 guests at their Beverly Hills home on August 16 2008.

Glee Creator Demands Newsweek Boycott

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Movies, Television,

Jonathan Groff, Lea MicheleUPDATE: Ramin Setoodeh, the author of the Newsweek article, will be sitting down with Murphy and the other Glee writers.

Newsweek may have recently fired the first bullet in a media war. A recent in the mag has been labeled everything from “antiquated” (Entertainment Weekly) to “horrendous” (Kristen Chenoweth). The article deals with the hot-button topic of homosexuality, alleging both that A) homosexual actors are not convincing in straight roles; and that B) we as an audience cannot accept homosexual actors in straight roles. The Newsweek piece mentions Glee star Jonathan Groff, who is playing Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) love interest Jesse St. James, and several other openly homosexual actors and actresses.

creator Ryan Murphy has come forward in the press, urging people to boycott Newsweek as a result. He says the article is “damaging, needlessly cruel and mind-blowingly bigoted.” “Would the magazine have published an article where the author makes a thesis statement that minority actors should only be allowed and encouraged to play domestics? I think not,” Murphy said in a statement. He found it “shocking” that “Newsweek went ahead and published such a blatantly homophobic article in the first place.”

“Today, I have asked GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios to stand with me and others and ask for an immediate boycott of Newsweek magazine until an apology is issued,” Murphy stated.
