As so many fine hockey players have this summer, Mike Modano is officially retiring from the NHL. However, he first had to finish with his latest contract – a one-day deal with the Dallas Stars valued at $999,999, which provided a sense of closure to the former number 9 and fans of the franchise all around, as Modano spent 20 of his 21 NHL seasons in the Minnesota/Dallas organization. Modano will go down as one of – if not the greatest American-born player in NHL history.

Carlos Delgado reportedly to hang them up

Reports are surfacing that Carlos Delgado will officially announce his retirement on Wednesday. It seems like this is the last, inevitable move in what has been a very successful 17-year major league career spent mostly with the Toronto Blue Jays; from 1993-2004, before playing for the Florida Marlins for a season and then the New York Mets from 2006-2009. Injuries have plagued his return to baseball ever since, prompting the slugger’s ultimate announcement.

New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte to retire
New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte will be hanging up his glove and will retire, ending what has to be one of the better MLB careers a player could have. Pettitte won five World Series rings (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009) with the Yankees and is MLB all-time postseason winningest pitcher with 19 wins. He finished with a 240-138 record and 3.88 ERA in sixteen seasons, three with the Houston Astros and 13 with the Bronx Bombers. His candidacy for the Hall of Fame will be contentious as he did not win the magical benchmark of 300 wins, but 240 victories and an under 4.00 ERA in the Modern Era, as well as the rings and playoff wins, will make the voting close. However, that's all in the past and it's time for Pettitte to work on his future.

Brett Favre files retirement papers with the NFL

Brett Favre has officially filed his retirement papers with the NFL, a move many people anticipated, especially after such a horrid 2010. Will Favre hold true with his fliing and never play an NFL game again? It is possible for retired players to come back, but with his consecutive starting streak gone, the Vikings in a battle with the city of Minnesota regarding a new stadium or the possibility of moving, and being in his 40s, Favre will likely retire this time. He was one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game with multiple MVP awards, a Super Bowl, and owning the main passing all-time records.

Urban Meyer leaving the Florida Gators

Urban Meyer has decided to call it quits, officially leaving the University of Florida Gators without a head football coach. Meyer was a successful coach that helped the Gators win a BCS National Championship, but had a relatively bad season in 2010, finishing 7-5 and performing as in previous seasons. Meyer has health issues that previously threatened his availablity to coach the team and led to a Brett Favre-like back and forth on whether or not he was coming back to coach the team or leaving entirely. Should people consider this latest announcement to be the final one or will the back and forth ensue? For now, Meyer is out of the Gators picture.

Lou Piniella retiring as manager at end of season

Lou Piniella announced his retirement earlier today, effective not so immediately. The Cubs’ manager will give up the helm of a team for a final team at the end of this season, putting an end to a 23-year career that saw him captain five teams, winning one World Series and three Manager of the Year Awards. Piniella will join the likes of Atlanta’s Bobby Cox and Toronto’s Cito Gaston as members of a wiser generation to be calling it quits in 2010.

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson to retire?

Phil Jackson, iconic coach thanks to his record 11 NBA records, is thinking about retirement and leaving the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. Jackson who led both the Chicago Bulls and Lakers to three-peats, could win another trifecta should he come back for the 2010-11 NBA season and win an amazing fourth set of title three-peats. However, Jackson’s health will be the most important factor on whether or not he returns to the sidelines, not the promise of winning another title or even money it seems. It’s known that Lakers owner, Jerry Buss, wants Jackson to take a significant paycut from Jackson’s $12 million he earned this past season. However, how do you not pay, arguably, the greatest NBA coach whatever he wants, especially coming off a championship season? But, that’s if Jackson is deemed healthy enough. This much is certain, the Lakers players and fans want Jackson back.

After 19 years in Detroit, is Nicklas Lidstrom finally ready to call it a career? With the Red Wings’ elimination from the playoffs on Saturday night, another season came to a close for the Swedish defenseman, and at 40 year old, some are wondering if there’s anything left in the tank for the All-Star blue-liner. Tkachuk’s career to close Saturday night

The latest in a long line of NHL greats has announced his pending retirement as of the end of the season. Keith Tkachuk will play his final game on the road against Nashville this coming Saturday, after which he’ll unlace his skates as a professional hockey player for the final time after a 19-year long career. In that time, Tkachuk has established himself as one of the greatest American-born hockey players with one of the most deceiving names to pronounce.

Retirement coming for Cox, Gaston

This season marks the final one for both Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox and Toronto Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston. These two coaches have a long history and friendship together, going back over 30 years when they played together in the Venezuelan and Texas Leagues. Both have very opposite coaching styles – Cox is known for his occasional angry outbursts, while Gaston can make an umpire self-reflect with a simple wordless stare. Now, the two share a common destination that each will arrive at in very opposite ways.
