Pirates’ pen mild without Evan Meek
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,
In 2010, pitcher Evan Meek was one of the Pittsburgh Pirates' top relievers. Pitching for a team that has failed to reach even low expectations over the past two decades, Meek emerged as one of the team’s only reliable late inning options. Meek was exceptional all season long. He finished the year with a 5-4 record, but had a 2.14 ERA in 80.0 innings pitched, allowed 35 walks to 70 strikeouts, had a WHIP of 1.05 and opponents hit just .185 off him.

Tampa Bay Rays recall Brandon Guyer to replace Upton or Niemann
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,
The ever-creative Tampa Bay Rays are preparing for the worst. Early on Friday they played right-handed starter Jeff Niemann on the disabled list, leaving a vacancy in the starting rotation, and to replace him, they’ve called up Brandon Guyer from Triple-A Durham. As an outfielder, Guyer won’t be making any starts on the mound. Instead, he’s there to provide insurance in case center fielder B.J. Upton winds up being suspended by the league for a tantrum he threw in Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Zack Greinke to start on DL with injured rib
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,
Due to an extreme game of pick-up basketball, Zack Greinke has a hairline fracture in a rib on the left side of his body and will likely start the MLB season on the disabled list. Fans of the right-hander in Milwaukee will have to wait a few more weeks before they see their new ace in a Brewers uniform. It’s the latest mini-tragedy for a team who has had more than their fair share of them over the last 30 years.

Chavez falls for the last time?

Veteran Athletic Eric Chavez’s days may be numbered. The 32-year old third baseman suffered a neck injury and has landed on the disabled list - again - and although he claims he’s not thinking about retiring, he has admitted that this could be it. Chavez has said he’s had neck problems since colliding with minor-league infielder Adrian Cardenas during spring training. Chavez tried to play through it, but the soreness of two bulging discs has caught up with him.

Cardinals Acquire Maroth
Posted by Milo Taibi Categories: Athletes, Front Office, MLB, Trades,
Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Mike Maroth was acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, after many rumors that he would be dealt to another team. With the return of Kenny Rogers to the Tigers pitching staff, Mike Maroth did not have a place on the Tigers starting rotation. Whom the Tigers received in return for Maroth has not been disclosed yet.
Don’t yet count out the Cardinals. Yes its a long shot that they’d win their division, but they have many crucial players on the DL who could help them have a 2007 playoff run. The Cards have shown that they are not ready to go down this season, acquiring both Tomo Ohka and Mike Maroth. They also are said to be interested in Chicago white Sox ace Mark Buehlre. If the Red Birds can keep their heads above water just long enough until Jim Edmonds, David Eckstein, Braden Looper, Yadier Molina, Preston Wilson, Mark Mulder and ace Chris Carpenter return from the DL, then they could be the scrappy team to beat that they were last year.
