Gear Live Giveaway: Parallels Desktop 3.0

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Announcements, Apple, PC / Laptop, Software,
It’s been a while since we have given away something to you guys, the readers that keep us in business. We have seen a lot of excitement around the Parallels 3.0 feature walkthrough video that we posted the other day. A few people emailed in saying that $79.99 was a bit too rich for their blood for Parallels, although we feel that it is a tremendous value, even at that price. Others have balked at paying $50 to upgrade their software from 2.0. We say forget all that, and instead, just participate in our contest where you can get a new copy of Parallels 3.0 for free. Here are the details:

Others have balked at paying $50 to upgrade their software from 2.0. We say forget all that, and instead, just participate in our contest where you can get a new copy of Parallels 3.0 for free. Here are the details:
Our Parallels video walkthrough was published on our video show, The Bleeding Edge. We have made the Parallels episode available for your viewing after the jump. You can find the show in iTunes in both high resolution format (suitable for Apple TV) and a smaller iPod format. Go ahead and check out either link, which will take you right to the iTunes pages for the respective format, and if you would be so kind, go ahead and subscribe.
Now, on to entering. All you need to do to enter is write up a short review of the show on the iTunes page. Once you do that, let us know, and you are in. If you leave a review for both the Apple TV and iPod versions, you get two entries into the giveaway. We will run the contest through Sunday, and then randomly choose a winner based on the number of entries we receive. You must live in the USA or Canada to be eligible for the prize.
Good luck to everyone - we look forward to reading the reviews.

Video: iPhone Launches June 29, Get In Line Now

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Portable Audio / Video, Videos,
As evidenced by the video above, found on YouTube by one of our readers, the Apple iPhone now has an official launch date: June 29, 2007. The commercial first aired this evening during an episode of 60 Minutes. The announcement of the release date was subtle, and was featured at the end of the spot, which showcase a few of the iPhone’s functions. We were expecting Steve Jobs to announce the launch date at WWDC, but what do we know? All that matters now is that the biggest mobile phone launch in history is just a few weeks away.
UPDATE: Apple just posted three new iPhone commercials, all featuring the June 29 launch date.

Xbox 360 Spring 2007 Dashboard Update Video

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Microsoft, Rumors, Software, Video Games,
If this one is a fake, it’s a darn good one. The guys over at MyGamerCard.net are saying this was leaked on Gamespot, and subsequently pulled, but not before it was downloaded and placed on YouTube for our benefit. What you will find above is a video walkthrough of the Xbox 360 Spring 2007 Dashboard update. Claiming that it will be released on May 7, 2007, it boast quite a few new features, including:
- Ability to add up to 600 Windows Live Messenger contacts to your Friends List.
- Text chat with up to 6 Live Messenger contacts at once during games or movies.
- The Marketplace will be getting its own Dashboard Blade.
- The Marketplace will be skinned independently of the Dashboard, for special events.
- The Marketplace will be getting a new, easier-to-navigate remake.
- Achievement Pop-ups will now display how many points and which Achievement you have gained.
- Low-power downloading (fans off) and auto-off after finishing queued downloads.
- View partially downloaded video files.
What we like most? The fact that you can start watching movies files before they finish downloading, along with the fact that when you earn an acheivment, you get the details in the pop-up notification instead of having to hit the guide button for the full scoop. Everything else seems to be fluff for the most part, unles you have tons of Windows Live contacts. Our main question? Where the hell is Internet Explorer?
Let us know what you think of the video in the comments.

A Look At Storing Digital Media

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Movies, Storage, Videos,
A friend of ours sent us this video, taking a look at the history of storing media, starting from the old-school film strip. You know…those huge reels you used to watch Martin Luther King, Jr. videos on in elementary school back in the day? While the video is simple, we figure it’s an intresting look at the evolution of storing media. Check it out for a look how to create your 21st Century Shoebox.
[Thanks, Doug!]
Bank Robber Visible on YouTube

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Internet, Videos,
Listen up, all you Gear Livers. Last week we told you about the robber with his own MySpace entry, in an effort to apprehend him somewhere between Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Sgt. Jarrad Copeland has told Gear Live that he has also posted on YouTube. Take a good look and if you think you have seen the alleged perpetrator, become a superhero and turn in the guy. We’d rather not meet him at our local convenience store and assume you probably would feel the same way.
