Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Rumors,

Gary BettmanSo the NHL made another controversial, media-frenzy-inducing move; it’s just another day at the New York office. With the announcement that they rejected the New Jersey Devils-Ilya Kovalchuk contract worth $102 million over 17-years, this summer’s biggest hockey storybook was given a new chapter. Details why the NHL did not like the deal are tentative, but so far the reasoning says that the deal was rejected “on the grounds that it circumvents the NHL’s salary cap.”

Ilya Kovalchuk re-signs with the New Jersey Devils

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Ilya KovalchukNow that Ilya Kovalchuk has finally made up his mind, the rest of the NHL can return to summer hours. After months of speculation of where this year’s top free agent would land, Kovy brought the discussion full-circle as he chose to stay in New Jersey, which is exactly where many thought he would end up when free agency opened up after the playoffs. Several teams tried their best to acquire the Russian-born scorer; most of them being the Los Angeles Kings; but in the end it was New Jersey who won.

The dismantling of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Championship, NHL,

Jonathan ToewsThe season has yet to begin, but it already looks like the Chicago Blackhawks are mailing it in. Okay, maybe that is a little harsh, but since winning their first Stanley Cup since 1961 last month, the team has shipped a lot of key players out the door in order to make room under the salary cap. More than a half-dozen who drank from Lord Stanley’s mug have moved out of Chicago - willingly or unwillingly - and won’t be back for the 2010-11 season.

Cammi GranatoThe Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee dusted themselves off and joined the 21st century on Tuesday afternoon when they selected both potential choices to be the pioneers of the women’s game to become members of the famed building. Toronto’s Angela James and Downers Grove, Illinois native Cammi Granato will become the first females to be inducted in a decision that many believe is years late. However, late is better than never, as they say.

Halak sent to Blues with a modest ‘thank you’

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Trades,

Jaroslav HalakThe near-Conn Smythe winner Jaroslav Halak has been rewarded for his incredible playoff run. The Montreal Canadiens sent him off to St. Louis in a trade for a pair of young prospects. In the process, Montreal’s former main goaltender Carey Price once again has the starter’s job; but only for the time being. The trade is being questioned by many; all wondering if it was a good idea to move Halak and keep Price. Due to their contracts, it was inevitable that one had to go, but why did it have to be the one who gave hope to the otherwise defeated city?

MLB to soon dominate the airwaves

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,

Robinson CanoWith Tuesday’s penultimate Game 6 sending the NBA Finals to a climactic one game, winner-take-all finale, Major League Baseball came one step closer to owning fan dollars and television sets indefinitely for the foreseeable future. As the only major North American sports league to operate during the summer months, baseball takes center stage in a sports world that is ruthless when it comes to competing for attention. But due to baseball’s “every day” nature, every other league’s attempts to land lasting headlines often come up short.

Hossa finally finds the holy grail

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Championship, NHL,

Marian HossaThe third time was a charm for Marion Hossa, who, after three straight appearances in the Stanley Cup Final, finally got to hoist the shining silver mug. Hossa’s Penguins fell four games to two in the 2008 Finals. In the offseason, Hossa jumped ship to champion Detroit and hoped for a repeat, but his new Red Wing brethren came up one game (and one goal) short of this feat. They lost, of course, to Hossa former allies from Pittsburgh.

49-year drought just days away from ending

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Championship, NHL, Playoffs,

Dustin ByfuglienChicago finally applied the strategy everybody knew would work: stop Chris Pronger, win the game. In that order. Pronger was an uncharacteristic minus-five in a 7-4 Chicago win in Game 5. The Blackhawks are now one victory away from ending their reign as the team with the longest streak without having won a Stanley Cup. 1961 feels a lot longer ago than 49 years for many fans in the Windy City, and they may only have wait as few as two more days to bring the Cup back home.

Best-of-three for Lord Stanley’s Mug

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Championship, NHL, Playoffs,

Chris ProngerWhat’s the story of this Stanley Cup Final? We know that the Chicago Blackhawks, after clinching the Central Division, have cruised through the first three rounds in the Western Conference while the Philadelphia Flyers, after squeezing a playoff berth away from the Rangers in a shootout victory, had a roller coaster ride through the East by making quick work of New Jersey, then becoming just the third team in history to come back from a 3-0 series deficit, then obliterating the weary Canadiens. But how do those two paths converge into something entertaining?

The unexpected league leader Konopka

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Zenon KonopkaWhen you look at the list of the most useless NHLers of the 2009-10 season, Tampa Bay’s Zenon Konopka should be right at the top. Konopka led the league in penalty minutes with 265. He only played 602 minutes on the ice. During said ice time, Konopka notched a whopping two goals and three helpers as a forward. The Lightning paid Konopka half a million dollars to be the league’s most useless goon. He didn’t earn any bonuses.
