Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Front Office, NHL, Rumors,

Ron WilsonThe Toronto Maple Leafs are struggling to win games lately, or as Leafs fans call it, performing to expectations. Leafs head coach Ron Wilson and GM Brian Burke have reportedly not had conversations about Wilson’s future, but after scoring just 15 goals in their last nine games, something is clearly wrong with Toronto, and as always, Wilson and his job have become the center of attention in the media. Wilson has struggled to find a winning lineup of players, but that may also result from an incredible lack of depth among his players.

Tim Thomas set for record-breaking season in Boston net

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Tim ThomasTim Thomas is a perfect 5-0 for the Boston Bruins this year. Despite that, his team sits in sixth place in the Eastern Conference. The problem the Bruins have at this point is Thomas’s backup, Tuukka Rask who is like a yang to Thomas’s yin. Rask is 0-2. Combined, the two goalies have given the Bruins 10 points in seven games. Talk to anyone on the Bruins and they’ll probably tell you that’s not good enough.

Rick RypienSix games? Rick Rypien was suspended for only six games? After attempting to jump into the crowd during a game against the Wild last week, Rypien will watch his Vancouver teammates from home after receiving the professional sports equivalent to a slap on the wrist. We don’t know what Rypien’s actual intent was in going after the fan before being pulled away, but it’s not likely that he was attempting to get closer to the fan to give him a stern talking to.

Robin LehnerOttawa Senators goalie Robin Lehner made an uncharacteristic NHL debut on Saturday night against Montreal. Lehner was recalled from Binghamton of the AHL before Saturday’s game and ended up making an appearance when he started the third period. Jeff SkinnerThe Carolina Hurricanes may put in a request to play all of their games in Finland. The ‘Canes won their second game in Helsinki in as many tries – and as many games this season – with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Minnesota Wild. Last year, Carolina only won two of their first 18 games; which was directly responsible for their finishing with just 80 points. By November 13 of last season, the Hurricanes had eight points total.

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Guillaume LatendresseThe NHL season does not start with the first drop of the puck; it starts with the first puck in the net. Minnesota’s Guillaume Latendresse had the honors of kicking off 2010 when he netted a wrist shot over Carolina’s Cam Ward at 3:33 of the first period in their game in Helsinki, Finland. Although the goal came in a 4-3 losing effort, it served as official notice that the talk is over; hockey is back.

Darcy TuckerDarcy Tucker won’t be playing in the NHL this year; or ever again. After a 15-year career with Montreal, Tampa Bay, Toronto and Colorado, Tucker has announced his retirement after a summer of shopping himself around that ultimately ended without him finding a city willing to pay the money he felt he deserved. In a league where many teams are looking for young talents or fighting salary cap issues, Tucker is an odd man out.

Nick Foligno and Peter Regin battling for top-six job with Ottawa Senators

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Nick FolignoThe Ottawa Senators are looking to build upon a 94-point season last year that resulted in a first-round exit, and part of that is deciding who their top-six forwards will be. They have five. The last spot has been a tough battle between Nick Foligno and Peter Regin. They’re competing for the left-winger job beside Mike Fisher and Alex Kovalev. While Regin was the popular choice before the pre-season began, Foligno has made a strong case and may snipe the job away from Regin.

Islanders’ Mark Streit gone with shoulder injury

Mark StreitMark Streit’s season may be over before it started. The Islanders’ defenseman will likely miss six months after injuring his shoulder during an intrasquad game after being hit by Matt Moulson and falling into the boards. Streit will undergo surgery to repair what initially appears to be a torn labrum and torn rotator cuff, but he may also have suffered a dislocation. The Islanders will have to scramble to find somebody who can fill Streit’s skates and hopefully do at least half the job that he did.

NHL and HBO team up for reality series

Sidney CrosbyWhen the NHL started its “Winter Classic” tradition a few years ago, it received a lot of praise for coming up with a style of game that embraced its roots and actually generated some interest in hockey from those who normally wouldn’t dare ever watch the ice-bound sport. This year, they’re hoping to build on its success by pitting the game’s two biggest players – Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin – against each other. Also, they’ve tapped HBO to create a reality series documenting the road leading up to January’s outdoor game.
