White leads the league at least once

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Ian WhiteWhen Ian White retires, he’ll be able to look back on his NHL career and say that he once led the league in at least one category. With the regular season over, White has played more games than any other NHLer. Thanks largely to a midseason trade between his former Toronto Maple Leafs and the Calgary Flames, White played 83 games this year. Going the other way was Dion Phaneuf. Both defenseman are 25 years old, separated by less than two months, but that’s about all the parallels you’ll find.

Adrian AucoinWith the incredible amount of shootouts in the 2009-10 season, you may be wondering who’s doing the best. That would be the Phoenix Coyotes; just another one of the unexpected bits of news to come out of Glendale, Arizona. Not only did they dominate throughout the regular season, Phoenix has a record-setting 14 shootout wins this season, and even more unexpectedly, 36-year old defenseman Adrian Aucoin has been a key part in almost half of them.

Game 7, Game 82…it’s all the same

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Mike Richards/Dan GirardiOn the final day of NHL competition, it usually comes down to one thing: who will be playing who in the playoffs? That’s exactly the situation in the Western Conference as all eight playoff teams were determined earlier this week, but still, five of the eight seeds are variable. In the Eastern Conference, things are quite the opposite. The first six seeds are all determined. The last two are up for grabs between three teams in a game of NHL musical chairs.

Record-setting overtimes still not enough

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL,

Shootout goalDespite the NHL’s attempt to compress the season in the midst of an Olympic year, it still seems like 2009-10 has been one of the longest seasons in years. That probably has something to do with the fact that there have been a record-setting number of extra-time games. With the final weekend of games to be played, there have been 290 games that have gone past 60 minutes, and another record 177 that have gone to a shootout.

Rocket Richard race rides on

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Sidney CrosbyThe goal-scoring race is at its peak. Sidney Crosby’s 49 goals has him in a slim one goal lead over two-time defending award winner Alex Ovechkin and Tampa’s young phenom Steven Stamkos. All three have two games left to play. Stamkos has scored almost a quarter of Tampa Bay’s goals and that lack of scoring help has lead Tampa to finish outside of the playoffs. Meanwhile, a spread out attack from the other two clubs has each preparing for the postseason, but it’s been these three individuals who have stolen the spotlight this season.

The final days of the 2009-10 NHL season

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Matt DucheneWith only six days left in the NHL season, there are still four playoff spots yet to be clinched, and a lot more seeds to be finalized. The Eastern Conference is still pretty open, with Montreal, Boston, Philadelhpia, NY Rangers and Atlanta competing for three spots.
