A Question for the Presidential Candidates

I am not, in the least, a person one would describe as politically active or knowledgeable in any way. I try not to be naive about what is going on in our government or our world for that matter but I don't take pride in the fact that I am not as versed in the world of politics as it pertains to me, as I should or would like to be. That is why I am surprised to find myself so impassioned to write about a subject I never questioned or realized was so defunct.
My husband and I were able to view the documentary by Michael Moore entitled Sicko before it was released in theaters, via the internet. So I have had a few weeks to let the movie's message brew and I have been able to ascertain how this low-budget documentary could transform our failing healthcare system now that the average American has access to the facts. It is up to each one of us to elect the man or woman who can focus their attention on a system of healthcare that is in such dire straits that even receiving basic care is a joke. It is a poor representation of a nation that calls itself a Superpower.

Harry Potter and the Book That Sold

The seventh (and last) edition to the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, hasn’t even hit the shelves yet, and it’s already sold more than one million copies. According to Amazon.com, J.K. Rowling’s last Harry novel is the most pre-ordered product in Amazon’s history, with 1.6 million copies already on the pre-order list for shipment around the world. The book will be in bookstores worldwide on July 21, though sales are expected to rise by several hundred thousand copies by that time. Rowling has publicly stated that “at least two” characters will die in this last book, though she refuses to give any hints about who those characters might be. Rowling, with more than 325 million copies of Harry books sold, is the first author to ever make a billion dollars from her literary efforts. The Harry Potter franchise includes a highly successful string of movies, with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix scheduled for theaters July 13. The final movie won’t make it to the theatres until 2010.

- Larry Flint had hoped to fire the entire staff of Tips and Tricks magazine while they were all at E3. Too bad he fired the freelancers a week early and they told the staff. Don’t you hate when being a nice guy blows a really great evil plan? And isn’t it ironic that the guy who built his empire on other people s*cking c*ocks turns out to the the biggest c*cks*ucker of them all?
- Shadowrun for Vista has been cracked to run on XP. And there was much rejoicing. (yaaay!)
- Lyndon LaRouch, notorious conspiracy theorist and gay hater, and his merry band of crazy geezers are ticked because the final report on the Virginia Tech massacre doesn’t mention video games—despite the fact there’s been no evidence the shooter ever played games. LaRouch figures it’s… wait for it… A CONSPIRACY!!
Ed. Note: Edie apologizes to for mistaking LaRouche as a guy who was notorious for anti-gay legislation. Actually, he is the freak who tried to get anti-gay legislation passed by California voters back in the 1980s that would have quarentined gays to prevent AIDS. I knew he smelled crazy…

New Content For Xbox Live Video Marketplace

Over in Microsoft’s camp, chest thumping has commenced with their announcement of over 7,000 pieces of digital content for their burgeoning, yet still controversial – see Guitar Hero II, horse armor – Xbox Live Marketplace. The month of June will absolutely clobber their current video collection with brand new stuff.
Geneon/Funimation is preparing an all new addition to the Video Marketplace stable: Anime! Akira, Samurai 7, Basilisk, and Lupin the 3rd should be tempting you as early as next week. It’s said that more are to come soon, so let’s cross our fingers for HD Evangelion and Samurai Champloo, shall we?
MTV is offering a slate of Country Music Television programs to the table, including Comedy Stage, Foxworthy’s Big Night Out, and Prankville. Another slate comes from the networks gay/lesbian channel, Logo, offering up The Big Gay Sketch Show and Noah’s Arc. While it’s nice to see companies attempting to broaden the current demographic, one has to wonder how this kind of content will do on the notoriously immature Xbox Live service.
The obligatory new movies are also on their way: Pan’s Labyrinth, Dreamgirls, Shooter, Black Snake Moan, Team America: World Police, and Letters from Iwo Jima are all scheduled to arrive in June.
A Lot of New Reality for FOX

reality TV success, FOX is taking their viewers On the Lot right after everyone tunes in to watch the two remaining American Idols belt out tunes before a live audience. The last time FOX debuted a brand-new show behind Idol, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader, the game show became an overnight success. Will the same ploy work with On The Lot, a reality competition that features would-be filmmakers? If you’ve already got the biggest audience of reality watchers in the palm of your hand, why not keep them there, right?
Twelve thousand video submissions flooded TheLot.com, each one made by an aspiring filmmaker hoping to break into one of the toughest industries around: film entertainment. Of these submissions, fifty have been chosen to go head-to-head On The Lot. The show, created by well-known TV producer Mark Burnett, famous film director Steven Spielberg, and DreamWorks Television studios, will begin with two “audition rounds” on Tuesday, May 22 (right after Idol) and Thursday, May 24 at 9:30 ET. The semi-finalists will get to visit a Hollywood set (though more than half of the submissions received for On The Lot came from LA anyway) and be sent off “Hollywood Boot Camp” that will entail rough-and-tumble movie making at its finest.

New Conan Movies, Screens Look Dismember-ific

Sure, it may owe a lot to its predecessors, and its timing may be bad given the emminent release of God of War II. But I’ll be damned if this game doesn’t look like some straight-up chop-up-some-baddies fun.
I mean just LOOK at that carnage! I’m pretty sure I haven’t seen a floor that bloodied and limb-covered since a bunch of yakuza bit it in Kill Bill I. OK, Conan isn’t the most original game, and given the history of movies turned into games, I don’t have the highest of hopes. Still, some developer had a lot of fun figuring out n different ways to cut a person into bits.
Conan (not to be confused with the upcoming MMORPG Age of Conan) will be hitting the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2008. Hopefully these previews will keep your bloodlust in check until then.

What Went Wrong at the Oscars?

Though the 79th Annual Academy Awards were scheduled to take three hours (not including all the pre-coverage and after-coverage, of course), it actually ran almost one hour longer. What went wrong at the Oscars this year? Was it long-winded speeches (many of which were cut off by the music), unimportant backstage coverage, somewhat tedious tributes? The entire broadcast was just shy of the four-hour mark at three hours and fifty-two minutes, which many fans dutifully sat through just to hear which flick won Best Picture. Though host Ellen DeGeneres tried to liven the broadcast up with humor, a lot of it (even her banter) was tedious and seemed to take for ever. Without all the extras, the Academy Awards could run like clockwork, instead of putting audiences to sleep.

American Idol Loser Turned Academy Award Winner

Jennifer Hudson struggled to gain notice and popularity for the first several episodes of American Idol 3. Today, she is the new hot actress in Hollywood. How did she make this incredible transformation? The young star landed the role of Effie White in 2005 (beating out former Idol Fantasia Barrino) in the movie Dreamgirls, an adaptation of the Broadway play. Hudson’s big voice and on-screen energy helped her finally gain fan approval (for which she battled on AI) and nationwide recognition in the form of the Academy Awards. It’s an honor just to be nominated – but to win is a huge deal. Though Hudson barely gained her seventh-place American Idol finish (she was brought in on a wildcard round), she won first place in the Oscar race. Hudson finally found the singing style that suits her best – and it shows.

Welcome to our live coverage of the 79th Annual Academy Awards! During our live-blog of the 2006 Oscars, I made what may now be considered an eerie prediction about Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe:
“For some reason, I keep getting this nagging feeling that their relationship will dissolve sometime soon, but that discussion is for another post.”
I’d like to say that I’m psychic (if so, that Oscars pool at work is all mine)...but I’m going to have to chalk it up to nagging intuition. What is that little voice inside me saying this year? While some races may have been locked up months ago (I’m talking to you, Helen Mirren), there will be a shocker this year. I can’t pinpoint the category, but I think it will be come riding in on a big yellow bus…
