iPhoto 9.4.7

As we'd mentioned earlier, Apple has pushed out the OS X 10.9 Mavericks Golden Master seed to developers. Along with the update, an update to iPhoto is also available. Here are some of the changes Apple is promoting for iPhoto 9.4.7:

  • iCloud Photo Sharing: iPhoto sports improved Photo Stream sharing, allowing you to both share photos and videos with friends and family, and subscribe to streams that have been shared with you, right in iCloud. This includes the ability to add new content to streams, comment, and more.
  • Apple Maps integration: For images with location metadata, iPhoto now uses Apple Maps to show high quality imagery of the places where your photos were taken.
  • Improved local printing: Printing off hard copies of your images has been improved with a focus on improving ease of use.
  • Photo projects: The ability to choose photos that can be used to create books, greeting cards, calendars, and more has been improved.
  • Mavericks compatibility: iPhoto is ready to take advantage of OS X Mavericks technologies and APIs.

You can grab the new version of iPhoto by updating in the Mac App Store.

OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 5 13a538g

Late last night Apple released the OS X Mavericks Golden Master (GM) seed, build 13A598, to developers. When software is released as GM, that means that work has been completed, and that this is the build that will be released to consumers later this month when Mavericks launches on the Mac App Store. Alongside the Mavericks GM, Apple has also released GM seeds of Xcode 5.1, OS X Server, Remote Desktop 5.7, and iPhoto. Developers who'd like to install the new GM seed will need to visit the Developer Portal and grab a Mac App Store code. The download is roughly 5.3GB, so be sure you're on a solid broadband connection, as opposed to sipping a latte in Starbucks. As for the rest of the world, OS X Mavericks is set to launch later this month, bringing features like iBooks, Maps, Finder Tags, enhanced multi-monitor support, tabbed Finder, and more to Apple's desktop operating system.

We're also assuming that Apple will be launching its updated MacBook Pro, MacBook Pro with Retina display, and the all-new Mac Pro alongside the release of Mavericks.

In this episode we open up the AirPort Time Capsule 2TB model and give you a look at the specs while detailing the changes from the previous generations of Apple Time Capsule routers and devices. We will be putting the new super-fast 802.11ac AirPort Time Capsule to the test, and will have a review up shortly as well. For now, though, check out the unboxing video, and wonder along with us why Apple continues to stubbornly ship its routers with three Ethernet ports instead of the standard four.

Apple Back to School promotion live, $100 gift cards with Mac purchase, $50 with iPhone or iPad

Apple back to school

Despite the fact that kids just got out of school, Apple has launched its annual Back to School promotion. This year, those purchasing a Mac, iPad, or iPhone for education will receive an App Store gift card along with the purchase. Macs get a $100 gift card, while the iOS devices get $50. In order to qualify, the purchaser needs to be a college student, a student accepted into college, a parent buying for a college student, or a teacher. Apple's Back to School promotion runs through the summer, and the App Store gift cards are good for anything in the App Store, iTunes Store, and iBookstore.

OS X Mavericks includes offline dictation with live feedback

OS X Mavericks dictation

While looking through the various settings in OS X Mavericks, we uncovered a feature that went unannounced during the WWDC 2013 keynote. Apple will feature Enhanced Dictation in OS X 10.9 Mavericks, allowing users to use the feature when offline, and also providing the ability to get live feedback, so you can see what OS X is interpreting before it takes action, rather than having to fix it after the fact. Enabling Enhanced Dictation will require a 785 MB download, and the feature isn't yet enabled in the currently-available Developer Preview.

We'll report back with any other interesting Mavericks features we stumble across as we make our way through the next version of OS X.

Apple iTunes Radio

Apple has just announced iTunes Radio, the new streaming music service for iOS, iTunes (Mac and PC,) and Apple TV. The service looks to compete with Pandora, and will be built right in to the iOS 7 Music app. Apple will have a bunch of curated stations available at launch, and will also allow users to create their own custom stations as well. You can give a track a star to signify that you like it, share the station with a friend, and ask for more like that song. Led Zepplin is even available, a first for streaming. iTunes Radio will be free with advertising, but iTunes Match subscribers get it completely ad-free.

Rdio brings new iOS app design to Mac and web apps

Rdio Now Playing redesign

Rdio has updated its web and Mac apps with the new Now Playing view. Click the list icon at the bottom right, and the entire app becomes a stylized, blurry album cover in the background, with the actual art up front to the left, and the album tracks or playlist over to the right, allowing you to see what's coming up in your queue. We are big fans of Rdio here at Gear Live, and find it to be superior to Spotify in many ways. Rdio charges $4.99 per month for desktop and web browser access, while mobile streaming can be added, costing a total of $9.99 per month. Hit the Read More link to download the Rdio app.
