Giving Back to Schools

I am all for giving back in anyway we can, especially to our education system because the teachers that work tirelessly to help mold our children into responsible, educated adults should not have to worry about such things as; do they have enough pencils, calculators, books, or any other supplies in order to teach their students successfully? When did our education system get to the point that these things are constant obstacles getting in the way of a teacher doing the job they were hired for? Instead, spending time worrying about who to convince to supply new books for the school library so their kids will be reading things that are relevant to our time now instead of 50 years ago?

Gear Live Gives Back Education Charity Drive

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Announcements,

Alright, let’s take a break for just a moment away from the standard news fare.

Gear Live has joined the 2007 DonorsChoose Blogger Challenge, and we have chosen ten great causes that are centered around getting some basic technology into classrooms located in our local area, as well as some of the hardest areas still suffering the affects of Hurricane Katrina. We’ve chosen ten causes that we thought touched on what we believed in, and you can take a look at them and choose which one(s) you want to help. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for the children of our nation. Just know that the money you donate will go directly to that specific teacher request - not into some big pot of money that is then doled out by the organization. As donations come in, there meter over on the right will fill up.

Some of the most expensive purchases for schools are consumer electronics. We believe that all children need to get acquainted with the tools of the future as they learn so they when they are ready to hit the workforce, they can succeed alongside their peers. Please, help us in assisting teachers, children, and schools in low-income areas get the tools they need to help their children excel.

‘Hannah Montana’ Tour Outselling The Police, Springsteen

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Cable,

Hannah MontanaIt’s not uncommon for a movie to outperform its competition—so should we be surprised that the hottest concert tour this year is being headlined by a Disney Channel star?

The (a.k.a. ) tour is so successful, scalpers are already selling her concert tickets at five times the face value.  Seats for all 54 stops have already sold out—and in several cases, in near record fashion.  (It took only four minutes in the Atlanta-area and eight minutes in Memphis.)  According the Associated Press, her tour is outselling The Police, Bruce Springsteen and Justin Timberlake.

Okay, the Spice Girls did just sell out their London concert in only 38 seconds—but let’s remember:  Hannah/Miley’s only 14.

Britney Loses Custody

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Gossip, Internet, Rumors,

Britney Spears While details are still developing, People magazine (and loads of other news sites and blogs) are reporting that is temporarily losing custody of her two children, Sean Preston and Jayden James. will have custody of the children, beginning Wednesday, “until further notice of the court,” according to the judge at today’s hearing. The specifics have not been made public, but the odds of Brit having custody have become increasingly stacked against her after recent events, including charges against her for a hit-and-run accident, driving without a valid license, and of course… interviews from her former bodyguard that claim the poptart endangered her kids and used drugs. You also may recall that Britney is supposed to have random drug testing twice a week. No word yet on whether this recent custody decision is the result of any testing. There will be another hearing on Wednesday.

Nickelodeon Gets Kids Off the Couch

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Kids, Cable,

Nickelodeon SplatBefore I get into this post, let me first say that I’m absolutely giddy (yes, I said giddy) because I just finished watching My Name is Earl and The Office. How great is it that the fall season has started? Pretty darn fantastic… and I also can’t wait to watch the Ugly Betty premiere that I recorded on the DVR. Of course, it’s late and I won’t be able to get to that until tomorrow. But anyway… kids’ network Nickelodeon is doing their annual bit to get kids away from the TV by offering three hours of dead air on the channel this Saturday. From noon to three, kids are supposed to use the time to get out and play, rather than watching the tube. I think this is an admirable effort, but really… if there’s nothing on Nick, don’t they have a sea of other channels to choose from? Just being a naysayer, I suppose. Then again, I limit the amount of television my kids watch and they’d much rather play outside than watch the TV. Video games, however, that’s another story. I’ve had to literally implement a timer system or else they never want to stop playing!  So, folks, take Nickelodeon’s lead and get your kids off the couch and active!

Recipe: Diced Rainbow Fruit & Veggie Salad

Salad

My husband Andru has come to the realization that a lot of the food we eat on a daily basis contains a lot of sodium. Not because I have chosen to dash everything we consume with a bit of salt here and there, but because some foods come into our home with so much added salt through processing. He was fuming about how he had chosen to purchase some soup simply because the label said “Organic” because in our mind set “organic” is supposed to mean good for you, but that is not necessarily true so he went off in a tirade after reading the label and seeing that in a one cup serving of this “good” soup there was 980 mg. of sodium, 41% of the sodium we need for the day in one cup of delicious death. He was very concerned that this percentage was in relation to an adult’s body mass, not a 3 year-olds tiny frame. How much sodium can a toddler take before a salt-induced coma? Anyway, to alleviate his worries, he is on a mission to eat more foods that are “living”, meaning less meat and processed foods and more fruits and vegetables.

In order to support his new found revelation, I decided one night to come up with a raw fruit and vegetable salad that is delicious despite not being smothered in dressing—and I aptly named it Rainbow Fruit & Veggie salad because after all was said and done, I threw in so many different colors of fruits and veggies, it became a taste sensation for the eyes. I was very tempted to add a touch of sugar to the natural dressing mixed in, but then thought, well that defeats the whole purpose, so instead added some strawberries for that touch of sweetness. Voila…a new recipe was born, and Andru loved it and the kids seemed to like it also, thank you strawberries. It is a great side dish and the recipe can be varied in so many ways, I added raw zucchini when I made it a second time and it was a hit at our Fellowship meal after church. I hope it pleases your taste buds also!

Calm Before the Storm

alijah
Alijah started preschool on Monday. This will have been the third school he has attended in his short span of 3 years of being-- oh, my bad, 3 and 3/4 years. The first school he attended was a private clinic mainly for children with developmental delays, and it was a wonderful place that we still miss. The teachers and therapists there were very patient, loving, and nurturing and it is the place that helped Alijah to begin to walk at the ripe old age of 28 months when most children his age had been running circles around him for months. It was a place very focused on setting a routine for the kids and Alijah became accustomed to that and to the friends he was making for the first time. He learned how to sing songs, and use more sign language than what we were teaching him at home to communicate as he barely spoke when he started there, and when he turned 3 he graduated from that school because they only treat children under 3 years of age. We then enrolled him into a public school curriculum, yet still a class that was centered around developmentally delayed children his age, as Alijah still has some speech and social delays. This school and his last school were like night and day to us. The teachers were all great, but it seemed as if they did not have as much time to give the kids the one on one attention we had grown accustomed to. I am sure the private funding in the school he came from made all the difference but to a 3 year old, that doesn't add up to a whole lotta' beans. He was used to things a certain way so it took him a while to get adjusted to the kids and new routines. Besides that fact, this was a whole new class with a whole set of new germs so Alijah was out of school more than he was in class due to catching one thing or another every other week---no exaggeration.

A Look at Kid Nation’s National Premiere

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Kids, Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Gossip,

CBS LogoAfter all the controversy and news articles, premiered Wednesday night on CBS. Forty children between the ages of 8 and 15 were put in a New Mexico ghost town for forty days, and thus the news stories began. After rumors of lawsuits and complaints from parents, CBS kept Kid Nation under wraps for the early fall premiere. The network didn’t even send out media copies of the first episode, which featured the first four days’ of life in Kid Nation. But is Kid Nation really reality? Adult host Jonathon Karsh is onscreen a great deal of the time, and the kids obviously got a lot of suggestions from show insiders. Arranged into classes, the kids performed stunts to win privileges and prizes, and made a surprisingly smart decision when faced with having either a TV or seven new outhouses. Despite the young breakout stars of the series, the bottom line still remains: it’s TV, and beyond that it’s reality TV. There’s a whole lot of adult supervision and suggestion going on behind the scenes, no matter what CBS editing would have us believe.

BBQ Tofu Recipe

Tofu

This recipe was passed to me from a friend who has been a all her life. So, needless to say, she has an arsenal of delicious veggie recipes that I have gleaned to add to the eclectic bunch that I rotate throughout the week. I love this particular recipe for because everyone (including my kids) who has tried it, loves it. And it makes tofu taste like you would never believe. It has a few ingredients that one might seem would not be paired together but all of the flavors blend so well and it is a recipe to be tried on the naysayers of tofu. It is a meal that needs an extra day to prep, but it is so easy and foolproof. It is a healthy, protein packed meal that you will feel good about feeding to your kids. Serve it on top of white or better yet, brown rice; I like to add a green vegetable on the side to add that bit of color to please the eyes as well as the palate. I usually go with broccoli or green beans, but also love asparagus lightly sauteed with some olive oil and kosher salt and freshly ground pepper.
