Dr. Drew Wouldn’t Treat Lindsay Lohan for Addiction

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Television, Child Stars, Drugs,

Dr. Drew Pinsky has handled sex addiction, drug abuse and some of the most entitled celebrities ever to grace reality TV … but he’s not anxious to help Lindsay Lohan overcome her substance abuse problems.

“The only way I would take her is if she would agree to stay in treatment for one year,” he said in a recent interview with Popeater.

But Linds isn’t alone. Dr. Drew says he’d need the same amount of time with Charlie Sheen. “I do think my team could really help them in a special way, TV or not TV, but they need longer term,” he explained.

Dr. Drew is currently being featured on the fourth season of Celebrity Rehab, which airs on VH1. Last week on that program, actor Jeremy London talked about the alleged kidnapping and forced drug abuse inflicted upon him. This week, fans are expecting to watch Janice Dickinson blow up at the staff and/or other patients … again.

Rolling Stone Releases Final John Lennon Interview

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music,

Rolling Stone has released an interview with John Lennon conducted 30 years ago, just three days before the musician was killed outside his New York City apartment.

The full interview will be available on Friday. Brief excerpts of the interview appeared in a special story about Lennon’s murder, but this will be the first time it has been released in its entirety.

Jonathan Cott, the original interviewer, said that Lennon “didn’t mince words” and that the interview is “joyous and vibrant and hopeful and subversive and fearless.” Yeah … that sounds like John Lennon.

The musician was, predictably, harsh with his critics. He said “they only like people when they’re on their way up … I cannot be on the way up again.”

“What they want is dead heroes, like Sid Vicious and James Dean. I’m not interested in being a dead (expletive deleted) hero,” Lennon explained, in statements that now seem eerie.

Q&A: Neil Vokes And Dr. Strange #1

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Interviews, Marvel Comics,

Dr. StrangeOne of my favorite comics back in the 1980s was an independently produced gem called Eagle from writer Jack Herman and artist Neil Vokes. Neil’s carved out quite a career for himself since then working for all of the big publishers and becoming a fan favorite.

Coming up in February, Neil teams up with writer Roger Stern (Amazing Spider-Man) for a Dr. Strange one-shot called Doctor Strange: From The Marvel Vault #1.

Going back into the continuity archives, this issue tells the story of Dr. Strange’s first night in the house that would become his Sanctum Sanctorum for many years (the weird old brownstone at 177-A Bleecker Street in Manhattan).

Marvel’s solicitation copy says “But what eerie secrets does the building hide? What lurks within its walls? Is it...haunted? Now, at last, the full story of Doctor Strange's first night in his Sanctum Sanctorum stands revealed.”

Hopefully, Dormammu will make an appearance behind one of the doors!

Vokes has a nice, spooky style that’s perfect for Dr. Strange and since the story is set back in the Manhattan of the 1960s (the Ditko version of Manhattan), I wanted to find out more.

Weekend Reading: Star Blazers, Shazam! And Monty Python

Star BlazersMovies, TV, and video games! This week had it all. And even some stuff about comic books. Let’s take a look:

Star Blazers: There’s a new live-action Star Blazers movie coming, and Forces of Geek has 7-minutes of it. You know you want to see it, twice.

Mike Grell: Here’s a short interview with the writer/artist on Warlord and Jon Sable Freelance. “Grell plans more with his popular Jon Sable character and has hopes that Starslayer may make its way to the movies.”

New Comics Friday: Gary Tyrrell at Fleen catches up on some webcomics he was previously unaware of.

Raven: Comic Book Resources is reporting that the CW is interested in a TV series on the mysterious Teen Titans character. This is a way better idea than Aquaman or Green Arrow. I also like it because that means my pal Marv Wolfman gets some checks (as does George Perez) for creating her.

Last Batman Movie for Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale?

Whether or not Tom Hardy plays a villain The Dark Knight Rises (btw - it appears he is), there's one thing we should know about the next Batman installment: It may be the last for Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale.

At least that's what they're saying now.

In a recent interview with E!, Bale said the follow-up to Dark Knight will likely be his last turn as the Caped Crusader. "This will be, I believe -- unless Chris [Nolan] says different -- the last time I'll be playing Batman."

James Franco Shakes up the Actors Studio

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Talk Shows, Bravo, Cable, Gossip,

James FrancoBravo’s interview series Inside the Actors Studio recently had to turn people away during the James Franco appearance.

The staff rejected a record-breaking number of people who wanted to attend the taping.

All tickets sold out for the interview, which will air on Bravo next month. A source said the actor stayed behind to talk to the fans who bought tickets.

Female screams also peppered Franco’s interview.

According to a report, host James Lipton at one point stopped to say “17 years filming this show, and I’ve never heard a sound like that before.”

Weekend Reading: Green Lantern, Joss Whedon, Jack Kirby And James Bond

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Movies, Television, DC Comics,

Green Lantern I spent Thanksgiving outside the US this year so I’m stuffed with stir-fried shrimp and chocolate ice cream, which made for an excellent breakfast of leftovers, because that's just how I roll.

If you’re out and about shopping now for the holidays, here’s the best Holiday Shopping Gift Guide you’re ever going to need for the 2010 credit card season, courtesy of Tom Spurgeon at The Comics Reporter.

Let’s see what else is going on:

Green Lantern: If you’ve been in awe of the new Ryan Reynolds trailer for Green Lantern, there’s at least one person with an alternate view worth reading: Ricky Sprague at Project Child Murdering Robot. “The Green Lantern Corps is their ‘muscle,’ enforcing their rules of righteousness. They take creatures from various parts of the universe and have them fight 'evil.' There are lots of different GLs, made up of different species from different planets. You can see where this is starting to get lame.”

Peter Steiner: Cartoonist & Thriller Writer?

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials,

The TerroristI’m always the last to know.

I knew of Peter Steiner’s work as a cartoonist because he’s had something like 400 cartoons published in The New Yorker over the years. And I’ve probably seen most of them. He has a loose, fun style that’s classicly New Yorker-ish and his gags are very funny.

Then I found out that he’s also a writer of books as well. Only he’s not writing comic novels about summers in Connecticut or the party crowd in the Hamptons. He’s doing a 180 from his cartooning and he’s writing, wait for it, spy thrillers.

And he’s got not one, not two, but three of them, including his latest that came out earlier this year called The Terrorist. It shouldn’t surprise me, but maybe I’m a cartoon bigot who expects cartoonists to only do funny things.

I’m over that now, and I accept that cartoonists can also be writers of thrillers, science fiction novels, and historical mysteries, or even drive cabs or fix leaky drains. I certainly didn’t complain when I found out that New Yorker cartoonist Bruce Eric Kaplan (BEK) was writing for Seinfeld and producing Six Feet Under.
