How this Glowing Electrical Socket Helps Save Energy
Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Accessories, Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,

It’s happened to all of us….you leave for work, and an hour later you’re paralyzed with fear, as you can’t remember if you left the iron plugged in or not. Not so with the Glowing Electrical Socket, which glows a lovely pink color when said outlet is drawing a current! It’s actually a very eco-friendly device, as you are reminded that some of your electronics may be plugged in unnecessarily – and therefore wasting energy. Plus it has an LED, which alerts you when the current is actually growing stronger. And if don’t want the socket to glow, there’s a button to turn that feature off. What’s not to love? Unfortunately, we could not find pricing info, so stay tuned….

Pay Bills Online and Save .08 Tree
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet,
PayItGreen has produced a study that suggests that if you go paperless and use the Internet for your bills, you would save 6.6 pounds of paper each year, 0.08 trees, and reduce greenhouse gases by 171 lbs. They figure that the average household has about 19 monthly bills and/or statements from utilities, credit cards, and banks. After checking out the site and realizing that Americans alone make 9 billion payments in paper, we figure that takes the concept of saving a tree to a whole ‘nother level. It appears it would be more like saving 9 million of them to go electronic.

Kinetic Phone Powers Itself
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Design, Science,
Perhaps almost as useful as a solar powered gadget, the Atlas Kinetic Phone uses the movement of the cellular phone to generate its electricity. The power system uses an oscillating weight that runs the mainspring. If the phone is idle and loses juice, simply turn the crown a couple of times. Made with aluminum and a sapphire glass showing its internal workings, Richard Baiao claims his green device has a longer life cycle than most current cellies. Contact him for future availability and price.

Four More Reasons to Go eneloop
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Editorial, Handhelds, Hot Deals, Portable Audio / Video, Storage,
We have extolled the virtues of Sanyo’s rechargeable batteries before, but we are so psyched on them that we found more reasons to invest in them.
- One eneloop = 1000 alkaline batteries.
- We still haven’t had to recharge them after a month of constant use.
- You can use eneloops in most other brands’ chargers.
- With a free coupon when we bought them, we got these super-kewl adaptors. You only need one AA battery in each to turn them into C or D batteries.
No, we don’t work for the company, but it is certainly a blessing to find a product that does what is says. We would like everyone to be enelooped.

Oceanic Capsule Glider Runs on Heat
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech, Science,
U.S. scientists from the Wood’s Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOi) in the UK have been researching an underwater robotic glider that harvests heat energy from the Caribbean. Tested since December, the device has gone thousands of kilometers without batteries. The team feels that the capsule could undertake surveys for up to six months, although it still needs batteries for data retrieval, sensors and its satellite communications system. Still, we applaud the WHOi in its green efforts and hope the fish and tourists don’t mind.

The green heat is on. To continue a quest for a car that can make it up to 100 mpg, The AXP (Automotive X PRIZE) promises $10 million to the company that can make a “safe, affordable, and desirable” vehicle for middle America. There are two categories, mainstream and alternative.

EcoNEW is a recycling and trade-in program for used electronics and computers. At CES, they gave us the details on how their hardware recycling program works. Just head on over to the EcoNEW website, and enter info about the product you want recycled, for which you will be given a trade-in value. Then, just print the pre-paid shipping label and send the item to NEW. Later, you will receive a gift card of the trade-in value, to be used at a participating retailer. The disposed device will be safely recycled, or refurbished for future use. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
