Vibe Duo review followup (or V-Moda customer service sucks)

Previously, we’ve raved about the iPhone Vibe Duo headset/earbuds and the 2nd generation Duos with the answer/hangup button. Unfortunately at this time I’m are dismayed to report that I can no longer so highly recommend the Vibe Duos or any other product manufactured by V-Moda.
In the 9 months I’ve owned a set of the Vibe Duos, they have required repair once, and failed outright 3 times. While the Duos sound incredible and are super comfortable, it’s hard to continue to recommend a product with such an astonishingly high failure rate. It’s actually surprising that the Duos have such a high failure rate given their cloth cables and metal construction - initially we would have guessed them to be among the most sturdy earbuds available.
To top things off, V-Moda’s customer service sucks. Returns take weeks on end, and the most recent attempt to get a replacement pair of earbuds has ended in stony silence from V-Moda and a complaint to the Better Business Bureau. JVC-Victor HP-S150 Headphones

JVC-Victor has unveiled their HP-S150 Headphones with a frequency response of 12Hz to 23000Hz, a sensitivity level of 105dB, and an impedance of 32 ohms. Made of metal with molded stereo earpads to cut back on distortion and external sounds, the phones have 1.2m cords with gold-plated stereo mini-plugs and are available in red, blue, white, and black. Weighing only 68g, look for them to arrive sometime this July.

The earbuds are compatible with iPods, iPhones, and most other portable gadgets, and comes with its own carrying case, a set of 5 ear gels with cleaner, and1/4-inch and airline adapters. The lighter, the more expensive it seems. The Image will set you back KRW450,000 (~$349.00.)

Tired of your bland iPod earbuds? Check out Budclicks, decorative “add-ons” that snap onto those buds, lending them a little more personality. Designs include “radioactive,” “biohazard,” and for the ladies “pink daisy” and “red retro starburst.” According to the website, the Budclicks also fit on PSP and Intec earbuds. Budclicks are 1” in diameter and cost only $10-$15 USD per set.

FMJ Earbuds Complement iPhones

Another company catering to the iPhone crowd is Skullcandy with their FMJ Earphones. They feature a coiled metal cable at a length of 1.1 meters and an in-line mic. The 11mm buds have a frequency range of 16Hz to 20KHz and an impedance of 500mW. Although they are after Apple devotees, the 3.5mm gold plated plug will work with Blackberry Curves and other handhelds and phones. In a choice of black, chrome, or silver, expect availability around the first two weeks of March with a price of $79.95.

Brighton Earbuds Mean Flash

Bleeding Edge TV 252: Etymotic Research and EDGE Technology Earbuds and Bluetooth Headset

Etymotic is out with some new earphones this time around at CES. Developed specifically for gamers, the EDGE (an acronym for Enhanced Definition Gaming Earphones) Acoustics line of earphones has been created to give gamers an edge (har har) by using spatial cues to make them more aware of what’s going on around them within a game. The earphones have a microphone and send switch, so they eliminate the need for separate microphones on the desk and are also compatible with most standard VOIP hardware.
Etymotic’s HF2 earphones are based on their ER4 model, but feature a microphone with a mic and a send switch plus a 4 barrel plug making it fully compatible with the iPhone. Retailing at $179, these earphones look to be a great value and will be available soon.
Last on the list from Etymotic is a Bluetooth headset with a detachable boom. Because the boom extends almost all the way to the wearer’s mouth, it broadcasts 28 to 30 decibels - still within the safe range of volume but a lot easier to hear for the person on the other end of the line. The headset will be available soon for an MSRP of $129.

We guess we aren’t the only ones who fret that we might lose our iPod buds in our ear canals. Last February we told you about iHearSafe Headphones, which protects the hearing of children (or, really, anyone) by limiting audio decibels to 80 or below, regardless of how high the volume is cranked on the device. The headphones are available for $20 USD. By chance we literally ran into iHearSafe inventor and mom, Christine Ingemi, at this year’s CES, getting the word out about her earbuds.
