Thursday Ratings: CBS Wins the Idol-Free Night

Despite two hours of repeats, CBS was able to step up and take the night back from FOX.

- Survivor (13.1 million, 4.2/13 in 18-49) was the most watched show of the evening.
- Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (9.3 million, 2.7/8) came nowhere close to Idol numbers.
- Lost* (1.8/5) kicked off its block with 5.3 million.
- My Name is Earl* (1.6/5) averaged 4.3 million in its hour.
- Smallville (3.8 million, 1.6/5) was up by 1.5 million.

Wednesday Ratings: FOX Pleased with American Idol’s Results

Even though the most exciting part of American Idol happened during the last 5 minutes, the show’s whole hour dominated the evening.

- The Moment of Truth (10.4 million, 4.1/12 in 18-49) lost 5 million without Idol support.
- Deal or No Deal (10.2 million, 2.5/7) nipped on Truth‘s tails.
- Wife Swap (6.3 million, 2.4/7) was up by over a million.
- Big Brother (5.4 million, 1.8/5) kissed 500,000 goodbye.
- America’s Next Top Model (1.8/5) held firm at 3.6 million.

FOX’s new dramas failed to muster up much attention. The network fell in third last night behind CBS and NBC.

- The Bachelor special (7.7 million, 2.6/8 in 18-49) had a narrow victory in its hour.
- The premiere of Canterbury’s Law (7.6 million, 1.7/5) had to settle for second place.
- The New Adventures of Old Christine (7.5 million, 2.7/7) did 2 million better than last week’s Captain episode.
- My Dad is Better Than Your Dad (6.9 million, 2.1/6) didn’t do much better than most.
- How I Met Your Mother* (6.7 million, 2.2/7) was off a tick from last week.
- Gossip Girl* (0.5/1) trailed far behind with 1.2 million.

Fans of Oprah were feeling slightly less charitable this week. Although her show was still a hit in its hour, the program took a bit hit as well.

- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition* (12.4 million, 4.0/11 in 18-49) was off pace by 2.4 million.
- A 100 Most Outrageous Moments* repeat (2.0/6) averaged 7.28 million over two hours; The Simpsons (3.5/10) brought in a similar total.
- Big Brother (6.5 million, 2.2/6) delivered 300,000 more than last week.
- King of the Hill (6.2 million, 3.0/8) tanked by 1.5 million.
- Everybody Hates Chris (1.4 million, 0.5/1) was off by 100,000; Aliens in America (1.2 million, 0.4/1) was up by the same amount.

- Approximately 5 million cheered on Friday Night Smackdown (1.5/4).
- Amne$ia (1.6/5) had 4.7 million testing their memories.
- Grey’s Anatomy* (1.1/3) treated 4 million.

- My Dad is Better Than Your Dad (7.3 million, 2.4/6) was down a half mill from last week.
- How I Met Your Mother* (6.8 million, 2.3/6) dropped 600,000; Welcome to the Captain (5.6 million, 1.8/5) lost 1/2 as much.
- Gossip Girl* (1.4 million, 0.6/2) did about the same.

- The same audience saw the same person exiled on Survivor: Micronesia (12.5 million, 4.2/11).
- Lost* (5.2 million, 1.6/4) had 200,000 wander away.
- About 4.1 million checked in with The Office* (1.8/5).
- Smallville* made a showing with 1.8 million (0.7/2).

FOX won what was generally an uneventful evening. The only item of note was the unimpressive return of Men in Trees.

- Deal or No Deal (2.2/6) ramped up the tension with 9.4 million.
- Wife Swap (5.6 million, 2.1/5) and Big Brother (5.6 million, 2.1/5) turned in identical performances.
- America’s Next Top Model (3.9 million, 2.0/5) did slightly better than last week.
