Campaign for Drawing: Gerald Scarfe, Quentin Blake and Steve Bell

Even though I’m not a big collector of original art, I love looking at it and the pieces that I own are very special to me—and they’re framed and mounted on the wall of my office. I love to thumb through originals when I go to Comic Con International. I like to feel the weight of the art board, see the underlying pencils and study how the ink line digs into the paper.
The Campaign For Drawing is a British organization that’s holding a silent auction. The campaign is devoted to creating a “new regard for the value of drawing to help people see, think, invent and take action. Its long-term ambition is to change the way drawing is perceived by educationalists and the public.” Their Big Draw Auction features original art by a couple dozen wonderful artists and cartoonists.
Over at the website, you’ll find some excellent pieces by artists Tony Husband, Steve Bell, David Roberts, Martin Rowson, Posey Simonds, Gerald Scarfe, Bill Stott, cartoonists from The Guardian and Private Eye, Ken Pyne, Lucinda Rogers, Robert Duncan, Rosey Brooks, Anthony Brown, Quentin Blake and lots more.

Power Bridge turns the power strip upside down

The Power Bridge is a concept device that solves the problem that most anyone with a computer or home entertainment system has run into: power strips, with their mess of cords, are unsightly. The simple idea, designed by Hyukjae Chang, takes the outlets and flips them upside down. The result? Something that is functional, and appears to even be a bit safer. Way to go, Mr. Chang, for this long-needed idea of improving the power strip aesthetic. We hope it catches on and sees the light of day.

Distraction-Free 3D Illustrator Rhonda is Open for Beta Testing

Like DarkRoom or WriteRoom, which provide full-screen text-editors for writers, Rhonda offers something similar for 3D artists, with a minimalist environment and user-friendly interface. If you’re familiar with AutoDesk’s Sketchbook Pro take on no-frills 2-D illustration, you may want to check out Rhonda for working in 3D. Before you get too excited about creating the next Shrek in Rhonda, know that it just opened Beta testing and they are still working out the bugs and issues, etc.

DYA Phone mobile concept

What you are looking at is a mobile phone concept by tech designer Aran Mun, affectionately called the DYA Phone, but we think it looks more like a DIY phone. After all, who but a user would come up with a phone covered in elastic paint that protects it from damages?
Not only that, but who would come up with a phone with a set of ordinary looking, out-of-place buttons? Quite frankly, this thing looks like a mess, and the user experience would be fairly intolerable. What do you think?

Robert Englund Loves Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash Artwork and Not Much Else

Robert Englund, best known for his portrayal of Freddy Kruger from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, recently commented on WildStorm’s Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash comic; however, he seems to merely enjoy looking rather than reading it.
“Well, I love the artwork. I absolutely love the artwork. I like the storyline but I love the artwork. I think the cover art is just phenomenal,” the Los Angeles native explained.
Makes me wonder if he actually read the books…

Modern Fossils Sculptures

I like to think that in the future, the people of that time will come across relics from the 21st century and laugh at how hard our lives were. I can’t imagine what technological strides will have been made by then, but thanks to Christopher Locke we can have an idea of what kind of antiquities they’ll theoretically be finding. Locke’s Modern Fossils sculpture series renders our current (and some previous) technologies in a proprietary concrete mixture, giving them the look of actual fossils. Most of the pieces are for sale and range in price from $45 to $185.

Pay Phone Booth Becomes Aquarium

Pay phone booths are few and far between these days since we all have cellies. Artists Benoit Deseille and Benedetto Bufalino decided to turn one into a work of art as part of the recent Lyon Light Festival in France. This seems a great idea in terms of recycling, but the artists had more of a deeper theme in mind for their oversized fish tank. “We rediscover this glass cage transformed into an aquarium, full of exotically coloured fish; an invitation to escape and travel.”
