XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. and Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. have just announced that they have come to an agreement to merge. Monopoly outcries are likely a sure bet, as the deal would result in the consolidation of the two two companies in the subscription-only satellite radio business, so we can expect federal regulators to be looking at this deal under the microscope long and hard before it’s hopeful approval. The companies have also announced that Mel Karmazin, Sirius CEO, would become CEO of the newly formed company, while Gary Parson, XM chairman, would remain in the same position.
[Thanks, Veronica!]

Coming Soon: iPod Connectivity on Airplanes
Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Apple, Music, Portable Audio / Video, Transportation,
As if iPods weren’t ubiquitous enough (and we mean that in a good way), by mid-year select airlines will have iPod seat connections that will keep your little buddy powered and charged during the flight. Even better, using the dock connector port, you will be able to display the video content from the iPod on seat-back screens. It’s all about synergy, as many airlines are currently improving and increasing their in-flight entertainment options. Apple is currently working with Delta, US Airlines, United, Continental, and others, with even more airlines on the horizon.

Nielsen Studies DVR Viewing Habits
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Home Entertainment, Movies, Music, Portable Audio / Video, Transportation,
Ratings company Nielsen recently completed a study on DVRs and mobile video viewing. The company focused on sample households who owned DVRs during three weeks in January and has come to these conclusions:
- The majority of DVR viewers watch in groups.
- Viewers will sit through more commercials when watching programs that are closer to the original air date.
- Mobile viewing is still a mostly niche market.
At this point, only 19% of households own a mobile video device, whether it is a portable DVD player, video iPod, or video enabled cell phone. Those that utilize iTunes spend 95% of playback time in audio, rather than video.

Acoustic Energy’s WiFi Internet Radio
Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Home Entertainment, Internet, Music, Portable Audio / Video, Wireless / WiFi,
The advantages of internet radio over FM (and arguably satellite radio) are plenty: thousands of diverse stations, better sound, less ads and even fewer annoying DJ’s. The downside? A computer was always required to access this wonderful medium. Coming to the rescue is the Acoustic Energy WiFi Internet Radio, a standalone device that’s not only pre-loaded with over 5000 internet radio stations, but doesn’t need a computer…only an available WiFi connection. Translation? No monthly subscriber fees. You can program stations that aren’t included with the radio, and it can even pick up English-speaking stations in foreign countries. Plus, you can hook it up to your network to play your music files. Too bad the price tag is a wince-inducing $300 USD. But if you’re a satellite subscriber, you may want to break out your calculator and crunch some numbers…

MySpace Offers Free Indexing
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Internet, Movies, Music,
MySpace has announced that as of today, it is providing free indexing to content producers who want to block users from uploading their copywritten videos. They will do the filtering by utilizing technology called Motional Media from Audio Magic, acoustic fingerprinting invented by David Stebbings. MySpace has already been doing this on a limited basis for the past year by blocking users from uploading audio or video files not authorized by the Universal Music Group. It remains to be seen if this will finally shame Google and YouTube into taking up that same gauntlet.

Tascam has created the MP-GT1 player for those of you who saw “The Grammys” last night and wanted to be part of the action, instead of just watching it.
