Grammy GiftsThe rich just keep getting richer. This year the Grammy gift baskets include a free 6-month subscription to NetFlix, a year long membership to The Sports Club/LA, a Gibson guitar, a designer jean jacket and eyeware, and a two-night stay at the Morongo Casino Resort Spa in Cabazon, Ca. Distinctive Assets, the LA-based marketing company that produces the baskets, is in its seventh year of providing those-that-have with those-that-get-more. Do we sound spiteful towards all that opulence? No, not us.

SE k220It’s Sony Ericsson’s turn to expand their product line, this time with four new models, the K200, K220, J120, and J110, which they refer to as “candy bars.” The first three of those are camera phones, while the J110, which they describe as “robust,” is their affordable basic model. The J120 also has an FM tuner and a radio/alarm clock.

The K200, features a 1-button photo album, and the K220 offers an FM tuner that can handle up to 10 preset stations. All of them feature talk time of up to 8 or 9 hours and standby of up to 300 hours. Available during Q2 of this year, we are hoping that by then they will actually name them Zagnut, Skor, Baby Ruth, and Snickers.

Apple/Beatles

Apple Inc. and Apple Corps Limited have finally reached an agreement with the use of the name “Apple.” Under it, the U.S. company will own all the trademarks and license some of them back to Britain for their use. Also, the lawsuit will cease with each party paying its own legal fees. Specific terms of the settlement will not be released.

Both sides appear to be relieved that the entire episode is finally over. Steve Jobs commented, “It feels great to resolve this in a positive manner,” while Neil Aspinal, manager of Apple Corps said that they “look forward to many years of peaceful co-operation.” We can’t wait until a Special Edition Beatles Apple iPod is released to celebrate the event. Hint, hint.

VLC Media Player

Some of us just can’t go out and invest in all the wonderful technology now available. Using a rather ancient HP Computer that crawls along on Pentium II and only contains a 12 GB hard drive, we decided it was time to at least gain the capacity to play DVDs. After a bit of research, we found that our technologically crippled members of Gear Live had access to download the free VLC Media Player with decoder from VideoLan. Around for a couple of years now, its Version 0.8.6 was released December 10, 2006 and works just fine. Take that, overpriced WIN DVD.
