We do love ourselves a good battle, and it looks like is ready to start putting their dukes up against the super popular Apple retail stores. Not only is Microsoft going to be opening up their own branded retail stores, they are going to put some stories “right next door to Apple stores” this fall. Oh yes, it’s on.

At first glance, you may be wondering what cool, eye-pleasing toys Microsoft would have to even lure people in to their stores. I mean, isn’t almost every consumer electronics store a “Microsoft Store?” Well, it’s all in the approach. We know that the will be released this fall. We know that the will have a nice dashboard update this fall that will bring with it a host of new social features, there’s the Microsoft Surface tabletop, Xbox 360 games, Project Natal, etc. If Microsoft uses some of these popular items as cornerstones for their retail presence, and even allows the chance to get first-looks at some of these things, they may be on to something.

We are ready for the war.

Snow Leopard 10A411

Just five days after Apple released Snow Leopard dev build 10A402a, we now have another new release in Developer Preview Update 10A411. This latest update is 748MB in size, and according to Apple, includes “general operating system fixes for stability, compatibility, and security.”  Getting a bit more specific though, a reader on the MacRumors forums has pinpointed a few changes:

  • Dock Expose now previews windows from other spaces.
  • Expose’s animations are very smooth now. I think they sped up the animation, so the user’s perception of the OS is visually faster as well.
  • In the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane, selecting “Change picture every…” and then “Random Order” does not select a random photo at first—the first photo will always be selected.
  • A bug is still present where applications do not retain proper focus when activating spaces. For instance, this Safari window is in focus, and a Preference Pane is opened behind it. Start spaces—and the pane appears on top.
  • No put back for items trashed from Dock or stacks.
  • Updated QuickTime.
  • Items can now be dragged to trash from stacks.
  • Trashed desktop items no longer fade away.

Once again, the update is available through Software Update, so have at it.

Akamai iPhone Video Portal

One of the new features that happily touted when they introduced the new OS is HTTP Streaming Media. Now, the common man may not exactly know much about HTTP Streaming, so let’s break it down for a moment. HTTP Live Streaming allows a server to server multiple versions of the same media file, and serve the one that will perform best for you depending on the amount of bandwidth you have available. If you move to an area with a higher or lower amount of bandwidth while you are viewing a piece of content, the video will be dynamically improved or degraded so that you get the best experience. Very cool, right?

If you want to give it a try, you can do that right now at the iPhone 3.0 Video Showcase, which is hosted by Akamai. Visit the site on your iPhone for the full effect, of course.
