Green Earth car cleaner, and the Bumper Badger - ridiculous?
Posted by Sparky Categories: Accessories, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Transportation,
This post-Christmas morning brings two automotive products to our inbox, both wrought with utility and possible pitfalls. The first product promises to keep your car clean without the environmental impact of 40 gallons of water being used to wash the car, and the second promises to keep your bumpers scratch free at the cost of a more than slightly goofy look. Click through the jump for the full details on both new products.

Earthrace Circumnavigates on Body Fat
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Science, Transportation, Videos,
Peter Bethume is attempting his second circumnavigation of the planet in Earthrace, a boat that is powered by biodiesel fuel as an alternate to fossil fuel. In order to draw attention to the trip, he and two other crew members received liposuction and collected about 2.5 gallons of fat from their bodies. That’s enough to go nine miles. In all, the ship carries 3,000 gallons of fuel and can go up to 2,800 miles on a full tank. It can withstand heavy winds and 50 ft. waves. The trip has been estimated to take about 65 days.
Costing almost $5 million to create, Bethume cooked up this video last year in an attempt to raise funds for the voyage. We bet that he would still be willing to take donations, either in funding or your own body fuel.

Zoombak Tracks Cars, Pets
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: GPS, Internet, Transportation, Wireless / WiFi,
Zoombak understands that two of your best friends are likely to get lost, your pet and your vehicle. Their assisted GPS locator can help you find both. When installed in your car, boat, or bike, should it come up missing or is out of its “safety zone” that you set up, you can track it via their site or 24/7 toll-free number, and eventually through your mobile phone. The cost of the device is $249.95 with a service charge of $10.00 per month. The same service applies if you want to invest in the 2.5 oz. water-resistant pet version for $199.99. We wonder what happens if you forget your pet inside your car and it is stolen.

The navigational unit has the curiously sounding “Mappy United” software, and cleverly works as a text viewer and digital photo frame when not busy finding your way home. The W-700 model is available for 479,000 KRW (~$510.00) and 500,000 KRW (~$532.00) for the W-700B.

Air France To Allow Inflight Phone Calls
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Transportation,
Air France-KLM has decided to try out cell phone service on some of their flights. Calls and messages are routed through a cellular base station located in the plane, then transmitted by satellite to on-ground telephone networks. The system was designed by OnAir, a company co-owned by Airplane builder Airbus. There is an illuminated sign when passengers can use them, which is above 10,000 feet. We wonder if they will also come up with a way to keep those annoying callers’ voices down to a minimum.

Hybrids To Be Sold at Wally World
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Editorial, Transportation,

Hybrid Technologies removes internal combustion engines from cars and turns them into electric vehicles. Founder Richard Griffiths is trying to convince people to think of battery power as a high-end option. High-end indeed. Griffiths takes such cars as the Chrysler Crossfire, the PT Cruiser, and MINI Cooper and makes them hybrid. The result will be a $65,000 MAXI Cooper, which can run 120 miles on a charge and go from 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds.
Here’s the rub. Griffiths plans on initially selling his electric cars through Wal-mart at a starting price of ~$35,000.00. We are not sure what that means unless he believes that the shopping place of the “everyman” will convince us to spend twice the cost. We have two questions. If the cars do not sell at that inflated price, will Wal-mart roll back their prices? And if so, will the cars be made in sweat shops like most of their clothing?

There is nothing like spending an afternoon at the beach and then getting inro your car to drive into the ocean. Designed after the Lotus Esprit from the movie “The Spy Who Loved Me,” the sQuba can do that in a depth of up to 33 feet. Rinspeed’s Frank Rinderknecht is excited that he finally made his dream a reality. The vehicle features an electric motor for rear wheel drive and 2 propellers in the stern for when it is in the water with zero polluting emissions. Carbon Nano Tubes supply air inside in a self-contained system. The sQuba will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show this March, but unfortunately it will not become available to the rest of us for quite some time.
