NAIAS 2008: Mazda Concept Car

We don’t know why they spend money on concept cars that may never see the light of day, we are only grateful that they do. This Mazda has all the bells and whistles, the shiny paint job, the doors that go up, a design that looks like it could almost defy gravity. We just want to know how to change a flat on it. Unfortunately, Mazdanians were too busy answering questions about their other zoom-zooms, the ones that would actually earn them a commission, so we settled on taking a few shots and thinking that is enough for now. NAIAS 2008: Jaguar XKR

The Jaguar XKR was just too special to pass by. It carries a MSRP of ~$90,000 and is the elitest of the elite. With 420 horsepower and a 4.2 liter V-8 engine, we assume you are going to rule the road with this one as it can hit a top speed of 155 mph and accelerate to 60 in 4.9 seconds. It was the luxury that we just couldn’t get past. Reach up and the ceiling is all kid leather. You don’t just get new car smell in this car. It figuratively screams, “I am so rich!” The seats and steering wheel adjustments are so exact, even the shortest of us fit. A couple of interior shots after the jump. All we can say is that this is the car we want to be buried in.

NAIAS 2008: Saturn Flextreme

Our award for the most creative use of paraphernalia goes to the Saturn Flextreme Plug-in Concept. The vehicle has a 1.3 turbo diesel engine with electric components if you prefer to run it that way. It takes 3 hours to charge for a run of about 34 miles, according to our helpful rep. But the reason we especially loved this car was for the extras in back. See them after the jump.

NAIAS 2008: Saturn Aura Hybrid

Saturn seemed to be one of the few companies that decided to put some foresight into their cars, especially the concepts. We were struck by the uniqueness of the display of the Hybrid Aura, which apparently charges its battery with pre-kinetic energy while braking, at least thats what the nearby video explains. We just wanted to know how this ordinary looking car caught our attention just by the special effects on the display. Check another shot out after the jump.

NAIAS 2008: Mazda Miata

We seem to be drawn to not only the concept cars, but also the sportiest on the floor. The Mazda Miata still runs around $21,000 and looks pretty much the same. It still has that unique PRHT (Power Retractable Hard Top) that is hidden between the trunk and the back seat. Push a button and it pops up in about 12 seconds; no struggling needed. Another button push and it retracts again, at least we think it does. Either we broke it or too many folks had played with it too long. A pic of that after the jump.

NAIAS 2008: Ford Bullitt

In honor of Steve McQueen and the 40th anniversary of the movie “Bullitt,” Ford recreated its 1968 Mustang GT in a Limited Edition. Its creators took the 4.6L V8 to 315 horsepower and included a live rear axle from the Shelby GT500. Another tweak or two with its shocks and struts and you get the 2008 Bullitt. There will only be 7,700 of the vehicles available in dark highland green or gloss black and, unfortunately no mustang in the front grill.

NAIAS 2008: China Left Outside Main Hall

We headed for the NAIAS in Cobo Hall in downtown Detroit yesterday and were surprised at how little was going on, but greatful because we showed up on an industry “crowd” day so there wasn’t a lot of hype. Even before you get in the main floor, you notice that the Chinese cars weren’t allowed in with the American cars, so we wandered over to a couple of them before going inside. One of these is the TX4, created here as a taxi. This is what LTI refers to as a “multifunctional classic business car.” Included in its advantages is u-turns without 3-point turning, ABS for anti-lock, and basic comfort for passengers.

If you have a need for speed (13.5 mph worth) or are too lazy to walk around campus or your workplace, the iShoes will get you there without making you look too dorky in the attempt. The 123 Lithium-ion battery pack needs a two hour recharge for up to 3 miles of traveling. At a size of 11.8 x 19.0 x 4-inches, they weigh under 12 lbs. and can support up to 250 lbs. The iShoes come with a throttle cable and a MSRP of $499.00 (although the site lists a price of $599.99.)

CES 2008: Educational Tour Bus Rolls Into Vegas

Speaking of Yoko, she will be at the CES promoting the the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. It is a not-for-profit mobile recording studio that allows kids to make some music and produce videos free of charge. There will be live events, aside from Ms. Ono, that will include the Black Eyed Peas and give-aways, so it has to be worth a peek. By the way, if you don’t make it there you can check the site which includes future appearances such as Macworld next week.
