Yesterday, Apple announced the new features and availability of iLife '11. We were definitely excited about picking it up, even though we noticed that a lot of the features that Apple was showing off in iMovie and iPhoto seemed to be fairly incremental (we aren't big users of GarageBand, so we couldn't tell you if the new features there were awesome or not.) So we figured that one unannounced "feature" would likely be that the iLife suite had been converted to 64 bit. After all, Snow Leopard has had more than enough time to mature out in the wild, and it seems that developers left and right have jumped onto the 64 bit bandwagon. That's why we were sorely disappointed when we launched Activity Monitor and found that, unlike just about every other process and application we are running on the Mac Pro, the iLife apps are still labeled as "Intel" rather than "Intel 64 bit." I guess we will have to wait and see what happens with iLife '12 or '13 at this point.

Windows Phone 7 review

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Features, Handhelds, Microsoft, Product Reviews, Software,
When Apple announced the iPhone three years ago, the entire mobile industry started to play catch-up to what Apple was doing. It took a while, but slowly companies like Google, RIM, and Palm eventually released smartphone operating systems like webOS and Android that aimed to compete. However, not much was heard from Microsoft. Once heralded as a major player in the smartphone business with Windows Mobile, Microsoft took a hell of a long time to come up with anything that could compete against iOS, Android, webOS, and really anything else out there. Then, finally, they announced Windows Phone 7 Series, and smartly dropped the "Series" part when just about everyone made fun of them for coming up with a name that was more convoluted than necessary.
Microsoft wanted to tell the world that they were serious about competing, even going so far as to hold a funeral for the iPhone and BlackBerry. A bold (and ridiculous) statement for sure, but now Windows Phone 7 has arrived, launching tomorrow over in Europe, and arriving in the USA on November 8th. Has Microsoft actually learned anything by sitting back and observing the smartphone wars over the past few years, sitting on the sidelines while taking notes? We've been playing with Windows Phone 7 non-stop for a while now, and we're sharing our answers with you here in our Windows Phone 7 review.

Mac App Store announced for OS X Lion

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Software,
At their Back to the Mac event this morning, Apple announced the next version of OS X, Lion. One major feature of the operating system is the Mac App Store. iOS users are used to the App Store mentality, and Apple is bringing that to the desktop. Developers can submit apps to the Mac App Store, it'll hold free and paid apps, and Apple gets the 30% split that they've been getting from the iOS App Store. Automatic installation and auto app updates also highlight the App Store, and even more interesting, the fact that any apps purchased will be licensed to run on all your Macs. Very interesting concept, and we think this is gonna be a hit.
Even cooler? The Mac App Store will be open within 90 days from today, so it'll obviously be compatible with Snow Leopard.

Catch me on Windows Phone Radio!

Windows Phone 7 launches on November 8 here in the US, and in just three days over in Europe. I got a chance to sit in (okay, I kinda took it over) on Windows Phone Radio a couple days ago to talk to Brian Seitz and Matt Akers about what we can all expect from the launch, from the software, and from the hardware devices that we will see launching. We chat about Zune, Xbox Live on the devices, and also what it took to bring a bunch of Microsoft divisions together to collaborate on this operating system. It's all good stuff, and if you're interested in WIndows Phone 7 or mobile devices in general, give it a listen.
I'm gonna try and make semi-regular appearances on the show, so if there are any questions you have, feel free to send them my way!

Back to the Mac Apple event to be held October 20th, reveal OS X 10.7?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Rumors, Software,

Apple has been on such a mobile tear lately that many have worried that OS X was being given the shaft. However, Apple’s next press event looks to be all about the Mac hardware and the OS X operating system. The invitation is above, and clearly shows a lion hiding behind that Apple logo. It doesn’t take a lot of thought to put two and two together here—each iteration os OS X has been named after some sort of wild cat, and Lion must be the name of Mac OS X 10.7. News Macs and finally news on Apple’s next major OS? We can’t wait.
