Home Theater Does Double Duty
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Movies, Music,

This home theater, designed by Harmony Interiors, can not only play to a roomful of people, it can accommodate the viewing pleasures of those on the other side of the screen. Designed as a Golf Dream Home at the Jack Nicklaus Signature community in North Carolina, it features an outdoor motorized 11 x 7-foot phantom screen that can be seen from the porch or the lawn with its own putting green.
It also comes with a SharpVision XV-Z3000 video projector, a projector lift located on the ceiling for storing when not in use, and a Bose AV 38 Media Center for DVDs, music, and high-definition cable programs. It also includes a built-in Visable amp, a subwoofer, Bose Jewel, Adapt IQ, and FreeSpace environmental speakers, and has a Universal remote control MX3000 touchscreen.
Imagine being able to watch this 2007 Home of The Year award winner and practice along with the pros at the same time. You may not have to be a Tiger Woods, but hopefully you have enough expertise to putt away without endangering the equipment.

Combining art with food is the main function of the Evil Mad Scientists Laboratories, as near as we can tell. They have created a machine that makes three dimensional printed layers of sugar. Any unused material can be recycled for the next go round. They estimate the cost of their Candyfab 4000 to be only around $500.00. Note their latest outcome: the sugar Soliton, based on a sculpture by Bathsheba Grossman. If you are lucky enough to be around the San Mateo Fairgrounds this weekend, the EMSL will be appearing with their gadget at the Maker Faire. Maybe they will provide free samples of their sweet stuff.

The Stash Helmet or Crash Helmet?
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech, Transportation,
First came the foldable guitar, then the bicycle in a box. Now we have discovered the Stash Helmet that collapses into 60% of its original size. Still, we are wondering if this is really a good thing, because it seems that any helmet that can fold into itself could possibly fold into your head upon inpact. We are sure that plenty of tests were done before the head cover became available to the public. We think we are going to wait awhile before we invest in this one. The Stash Helmet is available for £49.95 (~$67.00.) at the UK Bike Store.

Zune Halo 3 Edition Details
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Design, Microsoft, Portable Audio / Video, Video Games,
We see that a bunch of you enjoyed our Halo 3 Edition Zune unboxing gallery, so we figured you might be interested in knowing a few more details on the device. We just got official word from the Microsoft Zune team on these facts, so you can pretty much bank on the following. First of all, the Halo 3 Edition Zune will only be available in one color - black with a blue double-shot. Obviously, it has all the external markings that distinguish it from the normal black Zune, but don’t go expecting any Master Chief green units.
The Zune Halo 3 Edition will be launching on June 15, 2007, and will be exclusively available from Gamestop stores. That means if you want one, you aren’t going to be able to order one from Amazon or pick one up at Best Buy - you gotta head to the wretchedness known as Gamestop. For those wondering about price, the Halo 3 Zune will run for $249.99 - same price as all the other Zunes out there. What’s cool about that, though, is the fact that you get a lot of pre-loaded content on the Halo 3 Edition Zune. We aren’t just talking about the custom wallpaper either - you can expect a collection of content from Halo, Halo 2, and Halo 3, including videos, full soundtracks, trailers, and artwork. You can check the full list of content on the Zune Halo 3 edition after the break.

Japanese scientists at Gifu University have created a bot that responds when asked questions about how it feels, and can move its robotic limbs to exhibit symptoms. Modeled after an adult female, the “patient” was designed for medical students to practice hands-on diagnosing of ailments. As an example, when the bot is suffering from fatigue and muscle weakness, she says her eyelids are heavy, frowns, relaxes her shoulders, then hunches over.
Researcher Yuzo Takahashi is hoping to add the robot to the curriculum within the next year. We were just wondering why it was created in a female likeness. Perhaps more than just being used for medical reasons, a future application for the robo-patient could be for those who just want to “play” doctor.

Tom Bihn Imago is Useful as Well as Ornamental
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, Cameras, Design, PC / Laptop, Product Reviews,

I now know why other Gear Livers were raising such a fuss. Tom Bihn’s Imago Messenger Bag, featured here in steel/cork/deep blue, is amazingly functional while being way more than aesthetically pleasing. At a size of 14.5 x 12.25 x 3.5-inches and a weight of only 1 lb., 9 oz., you can fit a laptop (preferably within one of their cells,) and/or a camera with all your accessories inside its roomy olive interior with two pockets. Then again, maybe you can just share the Designer Bag with your cat. There is also a zippered pouch in the front, a pocket in the back, and a ring to clip your car keys (hooray!) or one or more of their organizer pouches. Check out more details and images after the jump.

Kansas State University Associate Professor Scott DeLoach has recently received a $219,140.00 grant from the Department of Defense to support his research on mobile sensoring networks. DeLoach will be studying such characteristics as bots having knowledge of its team’s organizational structure, environment, individual capabilities, reasoning, and goals. His intent is to create bomb-detecting bots and their controllers that are better able to search and destroy weapons of mass destruction, just in case there may actually be some somewhere.

Timo is no ordinary piece of furniture. It serves as both coffee and laptop table, and when you unfold two hidden pieces of the Smart T-surface table twice, you get a small desk. Designed by Sungho Lee, it also features a drawer for stashing those old newspapers you just can’t seem to throw away. Still a prototype, we think that Lee’s creation will fit in quite nicely with our Foldschool cardboard chairs.

Front Design’s Eerily Changing Cupboard
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Videos,
Here is a bit more useless technology that looks cool, but does almost nothing, although it may freak out some of your friends if you don’t turn it on until the party has gone until the wee hours of the morning. Using the same technology as those billboards that almost force you off the highway, the Changing Cupboard changes its pixelated images every few seconds. Available from Milan’s Front, choose among three different designs. We are still looking for the handle.
