Cassette Tote Keeps Gadgets Dry and Comfy
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, Design, Misc. Tech, Music, Portable Audio / Video,
It almost frightens us that this tote bag is already considered retro. Carry all your hi-tech gadgets in the low-tech Classic Cassette Tote that measures 16 x 10.25 x 4.5-inches. It is made of non-woven flexible plastic to keep your iPod, iPhone, and any other iGadgets safe and dry. The handles resemble unraveling tape and the bag is available for $14.99 from perpetual kid. At least there is no rewinding involved, but merely unwinding on your next trip to the beach.

Threadless Spoilt Tee Ruins Movie Endings
Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Wearables, Design, Movies,

We admit to being a little torn: we abhor spoilers, so we’re feeling a little guilty about loving this t-shirt so much. It’s the attention-grabbing, conversation-starting—and possibly violence-inducing—Spoilt Tee, which blatantly reveals the surprise ending to many popular (and cult) movies, and one TV show. Available in men’s and women’s sizes in black for $15-$17 USD. Pop culture kudos to those who can identify the source of each spoiler—which you’d better know if you wear this shirt. This
writer got ‘em all except “The villagers sacrifice the policeman.” Wanna know the answers? You can find them, of all places, here.

DIY Clock Competition for Timely Inventors
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,
We have found another DIY contest for those of you that sit up and take notice at the mention of the word competition, thinking this could be your big break. To enter the Montreal-based FurniCreations’ challenge, you must either purchase their simple LED Clock Kit, (which comes with a display, breakout board with buttons, and a power supply,) or print out their cut out version and come up with your own design. The contest will be going on until January 1, 2008, so that you will have plenty of time to plan your project. The winner’s design will be added to their spring lineup and will receive 50% of the profits earned. Even if you don’t win, your creation will be included on the site for others to see how you spend your time.

Show Yourself Some Love with a Custom Action Figure
Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Design, Toys,
Even though we’re well past the age of playing with action figures, we love the idea of owning one in our own likeness. If you do too—and have $425 USD to spare—head on over to HeroBuilders. There you just follow the steps and in two weeks you’ll have a 12” version of yourself, with the clothing, accessories (including tattoos!) and even weapons that you’ve specified. Want your mini-me to be even more bad-ass? You can order a talking version for the same price, utilizing your voice in a 20 second clip. If you wish to order more than one, you’ll have to kick out an additional $40, ($50 for the talking one). Expensive, but worth it if it means realizing a childhood fantasy.

KumoTek announced that they have sold Bioloid Robot Kits to the U.S. Naval Academy for hands-on classroom activities. The bot can not only be a humanoid, it can also become a dog, spider, dinosaur or other configurations. We have decided not to make the usual joke here mentioning how military intelligence is often thought of as an oxymoron. We will simply state that perhaps it is a good idea if they buy the Beginner Kit for $349.00 or the Comprehensive for $890.00 before they try to construct the Expert version for $3490.00.

Colorware Now Offering iPhone Paint Jobs
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Design, Handhelds, Mods / Hacks, Portable Audio / Video,

With the iPhone selling as well as it is, we are betting there are plenty of opportunities for people to get theirs mixed up with that of someone elses. After all, do you really want to turn it on and verify that the wallpaper on any iPhone you happen to grab really is your bulldog in his pink tutu? This is why we are intrigued by ColorWare‘s latest addition to their custom paint services; that being for the iPhone. While it isn’t the cheapest thing in the world (but really - is anything involving the iPhone cheap?), we know from first-hand experience that ColorWare’s work is pretty darn impressive - just check out the paint job they did for our 3G iPod back in the day. To get a painted iPhone in your hands, you can take advantage of one of three options - you can pay them $149 USD and mail in your iPhone and they will do it up nice and send it back, or you can just purchase a brand new iPhone from them, which they will then paint and send to you. That runs $649 USD for a 4GB model, and $749 for an 8GB version.

Back in 2000, research had shown that adhesion from geckos was achieved from forces produced by hair-like structures (setae) on each foot. Now Professor Phillip Messersmith from Northwestern University has come up with a practical usage for the concept. Geckel has the ability to stick to both wet and dry surfaces from coating fibrous silicone (like the reptile’s foot) with a polymer that is likened to the “glue” from muscles. Messersmith envisions his water-resistant application to be used in bandages in place of sutures or patches and says that it can stick and unstick more than 1,000 times. Do you suppose they consulted Geico’s mascot when doing the math?

Vending Machine Red Conquers Tokyo
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Home Entertainment, Misc. Tech, Videos,
Look! It’s a coke machine! No, it’s a robot! It’s both! This giant vending machine is part of a Coca-Cola promotion taking place in Tokyo, done in the style of their 60’s action serials. We love the Vending Machine Red as a hero and would love to see him take on Godzilla, a Power Machine Blue from Pepsi, or maybe the Dualis Power Suit. This make us wonder why advertising always seems more adventurous in Japan than in other parts of the globe.
