CastlightWe have found that during a power outage, we have as much trouble finding a working flashlight as we do rounding up stray candles to find the flashlight. David Weeks of Kikkerland has designed a combo candle holder for almost any emergency. At a size of 11 4 x 4.5 x 4.5-inches, the bottom of the Castlight features an LED flashlight that uses 3AA batteries. Available in moss, stone, and brick colors, its cost is $40.00. Perhaps now all we will have to do is use this to find the extra batteries in the dark.

3D SnowflakeYou have just realized that your buds are do anytime and you just had to finish “testing” their new electronic toys before wrapping them. Solar Altoid LightsWe have shown you other stuff made with Altoids tins, and for those of you who have a few mints, some LED Christmas tree lights, and a solar garden light, you can come up with a string of lights just in case your power goes off today. Costing about $10.00, Wheelgirl placed the photo sensor of the garden light into the Altoids box and attached the lights. By the way, the device is intelligent enough to store power in its rechargeable battery when not needed.

Lego GH GuitarThis Guitar Hero controller for Playstation 2 made out of Legos is not only very kewl looking, it is actually functional. Created by David McNeely (aka Blue Star Legos,) it is the third guitar he has made and is modeled after a Fender Geddy Lee Jazz 4-string bass. Its innards come out of a standard GH guitar and the strum bar was made out of Technic parts. It took four days to make and we just hope he had sense enough to add some heavy-duty glue to the instrument, in case he gets carried away. You can see all the details on his Flickr page.

EveJapan’s Robots of the Year are Fanuc Ltd.’s robotic assembly line arms that are already present in pharmaceutical and food plants. The three arms feature suction cups that pick up items on at the speed of 120 pieces per minute. During the competition, they also lined up items in rows inside boxes. The winners were chosen for its practicality and beat out a dancing humanoid, a bot that can toss water on a fire three times as far as a human can, and Eve, a transparent torso for medical practice that complains verbally if the user tugs a little too much on a catheter.

Turbo Toaster

Oliver Newberry, a graduate of Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London, got perturbed when his beans, one of his fave meals, wouldn’t stay hot while he was making his toast. His prototype Turbo Toaster was born, apparently impressive enough to allow funding from Heinz. We admire ingenuity here at Gear Live but wonder if he could just keep the legumes on the burner while making his toast or perhaps make the toast first and the beans will reheat it. The thought of that breakfast may not get our taste buds excited, but it certainly helped Newberry land a gig.

Zwinky ShoebuyZwinktopia has followed in the path of Armani in Second Life now that Shoebuy has decided to sell its products through the site. Paying with her/his ZCard, an avatar will receive an “exclusive” pair that will allow the “wearer” to perform a specific action for each brand. While this particular gimmick will probably wear off quickly in the typical Zwink user, the company is smart enough to make it a tie-in so that the two of you can click over to the Shoebuy site and select similar wearing apparel. That obviously means real $$ for the shoe conglomerate.

sQuba

There is nothing like spending an afternoon at the beach and then getting inro your car to drive into the ocean. Designed after the Lotus Esprit from the movie “The Spy Who Loved Me,” the sQuba can do that in a depth of up to 33 feet. Rinspeed’s Frank Rinderknecht is excited that he finally made his dream a reality.
