iBose Egg Chair

The iBose Egg Chair has to be considered sound to the max. It features a Companion 3 subwoofer and a satellite speaker system with THD <.001. Four JBL OnTour speakers are each 17-inches and are accompanied by 4 fusion 6.5-inch midwoofers. In addition, 3 amps have Airport Express to let you stream Wireless-G or Ethernet from any PC with iTunes. Top it off with a Onkyo home theater receiver and you have one heck of an entertainment center.

This is almost too scary. iXs Research Corp. has created a talking Teddy Bear with GPS. At about a foot tall, it has 6 joints in its neck and arm to prove its spoken point. The teddy also has an alcohol detection sensor in its neck and will admonish you if it smells that last margarita with “You haven’t been drinking, have you?”
Stroke his head and he will tell you about nearby landmarks. And if you drive badly, he will tell you to “Watch out.” The company is planning a 2009 launch and has patented the idea so that they can implant their technology in other types of dolls. We just want to know, what will the guy in the car next to you think if your teddy is talking?

We already know that plants thrive when you talk to them, but what if your plant decided to chat with you? The prototype Pet Plant by Junyi Heo keeps track of its soil temperature, humidity, and water condition, and lets its owner know what it needs by means of LCD display pictograms. Supposedly, it will also drain itself if over-watered. The Pet Plant’s USB interface charges and transmits the info from computer software. Perhaps the next gen of the gadget will scream out “Feed me, Seymore!”

Kenneth Lylover Surf Chair

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, PC / Laptop,

Kenneth Lylover created his Surf Chair for the “Internet Collection” competition at the Scandinavian Furniture Fair recently. It’s easy to see why he managed to nab the Best Product award. The arc-shaped chair has a built-in LCD display, a mouse and keyboard for the user’s lap, and a padded frame for comfort. We think it is a fine idea for couch potatoes who want to go the extra mile with their Net searching or those who work best in a semi-horizontal position.

SnoMotes Don’t Mind the Cold

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech, Science, Transportation,
Researchers from Georgia Tech and Penn State have been working on 3 autonomous bots for cold locales such as Greenland and Antarctica. SnoMotes, funded by NASA, use cameras and sensors to navigate. The idea of the design actually came from a child’s snowmobile kit.The robots are sent to certain locations from base camps, then collect data for their handler. The scientist can then reassign location if necessary. Eventually the team is hoping that the prototype will have a full range of sensors. The Snomotes will be field tested in Alaska and on display at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry next month.

We would love to do more animation if we could get the hang of Adobe or afford the software. We found a beta site recently, Animasher, that can make even the most incompetent into an instant cartoonist. You drag and drop objects around the frame, add background, text, music, special effects, and/or speech. Adjust them individually for time and placement, save, and voila! You got
animation. We wonder if ATHF started this way.

The Bent Festival in New York City recently celebrated its fifth annual event and was attended by both newbies and experienced benders. For those who have never heard of them, benders take items such as 80’s Casio Keyboards and TI Speak & Spells and turn them into musical instruments.
“Circuit bending is a really great entry point for people into electronics,” says Mike Rosenthal, a graduate student in NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. We think it is a dandy way of recycling, although we must admit we played with our Speak & Spell as much as our kids did, and don’t know if we could watch the transformation.
